Maize silk-based biostimulant seed priming enhances salt resilience and productivity in Zea mays by upregulating antioxidant defenses and targeted ion-transport genes.

Biostimulant-rich plant extracts offer a sustainable agricultural strategy to mitigate plant stress. Two-year field experiments (2024-2025) evaluated maize seed priming with maize silk extract (MSE) at 5%, 10%, and 15% (based on dry weight) under normal (NC, ECe=1.48 dS m⁻¹) and saline (SC, ECe=8.90 dS m⁻¹) conditions. SC significantly impaired photosynthesis, leaf integrity, and nutritional balance, ultimately reducing plant growth and grain yield. These detrimental effects were driven by elevated oxidative stress (superoxide and H2O2) and cellular damage (electrolyte leakage and malondialdeh

Interaction network and localization of Brucella abortus membrane proteins involved in the synthesis, transport, and succinylation of cyclic β-1,2-glucans.

UNLABELLED: Cyclic β-1,2-glucans (CβG) are periplasmic homopolysaccharides that play an important role in the virulence and interaction of Brucella with the host. Once synthesized in the cytoplasm by the CβG synthase (Cgs), CβG are transported to the periplasm by the CβG transporter (Cgt) and succinylated by the CβG modifier enzyme (Cgm). Here, we used a bacterial two-hybrid system and coimmunoprecipitation techniques to study the interaction network between these three integral inner membrane proteins. Our results indicate that Cgs, Cgt, and Cgm can form both homotypic and heterotypic interac

Identification and morphologic assessment of mesocoelic recess by in vivo human brain imaging with 7.0-T magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The mesocoelic recess (MCR) is found in the brain of human embryos and fetuses. The mesocoelic recess seems to be functionally related to the subcommissural organ that is one of neurosecretory organs involved in osmoregulation on the basis of data from other species. Subsequently, recent speculation as to the importance of the subcommissural organ in the development of congenital hydrocephalus has been raised. Yet unlike other mammals, MCR is known to be a vestigial structure in the adult human brain. Here, we performed the in vivo imaging identification of this space to investigate

The potential role of polyamines in gill epithelial remodeling during extreme hypoosmotic challenges in the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis.

Polyamines are a family of low molecular weight organic cations produced in part by the coordinated actions of arginase II (Arg II) and ornithine decarboxylase (Odc). Although gill polyamine homeostasis is affected by acute transfer to fresh water, little is known of its function in fish osmoregulation. The current study investigated the role of polyamines in the compensatory response of hypoosmotic challenge in the euryhaline fish, Fundulus grandis. Adult F. grandis were acclimated to 5 ppt water, transferred abruptly to 5, 2, 1, 0.5 and 0.1 ppt water, and assessed for osmoregulatory function

How goblet cells respond to dry eye: adaptive and pathological roles of voltage-gated calcium channels and P2X7 purinoceptors.

Dry eye is a common sight-impairing, painful disorder characterized by disruption of the preocular tear film, whose integrity is required for ~70% of the eye's refractive power. A universal feature of clinical dry eye is hyperosmolarity of the tears resulting from their accelerated evaporation due to dysfunction of tear- and oil-producing ocular glands. A key adaptive response to dryness/hyperosmolarity is release of tear-stabilizing mucin by conjunctival goblet cells. Yet the mechanisms mediating this response to hyperosmolarity remain poorly understood. In this study of freshly excised rat c

Symbiotic bacteria may support calcium carbonate precipitation in the Gulf toadfish.

Marine fish play a significant yet understudied role in the oceanic carbon cycle through the production of magnesium-rich calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitates known as ichthyocarbonates. These deposits form in the gut of marine teleost fish in response to salinity, serving as part of their osmoregulation strategy. Through this, marine fish may contribute as much as 9.04 Pg of CaCO3 per year in global new carbonate production, being equivalent to or potentially higher than the production by coccolithophores and pelagic foraminifera. Despite their ecological relevance, the biological mechanism

Altered water metabolism in tuberculosis: role of vasopressin.

PURPOSE: Patients with hyponatremia due to tuberculosis have shown variable responses to water loading in previous small studies, ranging from persistent antidiuresis to a normal diuresis. Although tuberculosis is considered a cause of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), circulating vasopressin has been documented in only a few cases. We studied a larger group of patients to determine whether it can be suppressed by a short-term reduction in osmolality. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight hyponatremic patients (mean age +/- SD: 40 +/- 10 years) with pulmonary

Cytophotometric analysis of T-2 toxin induced alterations in chromatin condensation and neuronal nuclear volume of rat supraoptic-magnocellular neurons.

Quantitative cytophotometry and ocular filar micrometry were used to monitor T-2 toxin induced alterations in chromatin and neuronal nuclear volume in supraoptic-magnocellular neurons of rat hypo-thalami. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats (200-220g) were given a single i.p. injection of T-2 toxin (0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 1.5 X LD50), a trichothecene mycotoxin; rats were decapitated 8 hours post-dosing. After stoichiometric Feulgen-DNA staining of brain sections, scanning-integrating microdensitometry was used to quantify changes in the susceptibility of chromatin to Feulgen acid hydrolysis. Insulin-like receptors and carbohydrate metabolism in gills of the euryhaline crab Neohelice granulata: Effects of osmotic stress.

The present study determined the effect of osmotic stress on the insulin-like receptor binding characteristics and on glucose metabolism in the anterior (AG) and posterior (PG) gills of the crab Neohelice granulata. Bovine insulin increased the capacity of the PG cell membrane to phosphorylate exogenous substrate poly (Glu:Tyr 4:1) and the glucose uptake in the control crab group. The crabs were submitted to three periods of hyperosmotic (HR) and hyposmotic (HO) stress, for 24, 72 and 144 h, to investigate the insulin-like receptor phosphorylation capacity of gills. Acclimation to HO for 24 h

Arachidonic acid reduces the stress response of gilthead seabream Sparus aurata L.

In this study the influence of the dietary level of the fatty acid arachidonic acid (ArA, 20:4n-6) was determined on the acute stress response and osmoregulation of adult gilthead seabream Sparus aurata L. Seabream were fed a diet containing either 0.9% or 2.4% of total fatty acids as ArA for 18 days before being subjected to a 5 min period of net confinement. Prior to this stressor, a subgroup of fish from both dietary treatment groups was treated with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), an irreversible blocker of cyclooxygenase (COX). This would indicate whether any effects were caused by an enhance

Possible roles of prostaglandins in the anteroventral third ventricular region in the hyperosmolality-evoked vasopressin secretion of conscious rats.

This study explored the roles of prostaglandins in the anteroventral third ventricular region, a cerebral osmoreceptor site, in the osmoregulation mechanism of vasopressin release. We injected (1 microliter) prostaglandin E2 (12.8 nmol) or meclofenamate (78.3 nmol), an inhibitor of prostaglandin biosynthesis, into the brain region or the lateral cerebral ventricle of conscious rats, examining their effects on plasma vasopressin and its controlling factors in the presence or absence of an osmotic stimulus. The injection of prostaglandin E2 into the anteroventral third ventricular region augment

Fos-like immunoreactivity in the brain of homozygous diabetes insipidus Brattleboro and normal Long-Evans rats.

Water deprivation induces the production of the transcription factor Fos in neurons of the neurohypophysial system. These neurons, which are located primarily in the hypothalamic paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON), produce the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin. The present immunocytochemical study has analyzed the distribution of Fos in brain regions involved in osmoregulation and compared the extent of Fos immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) in vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro and normal Long-Evans rats under stimulated and non-stimulated conditions. Rats were osmotically challenged by m

Early detection and genetic insights into salt tolerance in rice by linking physiology and spectral reflectance during seed germination.

Soil salinization threatens global agriculture, and seed germination is especially salt-sensitive. Although seed imbibition is a critical early phase, salt responses during this stage remain poorly understood. Reliance on final morphological traits limits nondestructive early phenotyping, thereby hindering efficient screening and mechanistic insight. To overcome this limitation, we integrated continuous physiological measurements with hyperspectral data to model dynamic responses of key indicators and further leveraged hyperspectral-derived traits for early prediction and genetic dissection of

Specific biomarkers and neurons distribution of different brain regions in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).

The brain regulates multiple physiological processes in fish. Despite this, knowledge about the basic structure and function of distinct brain regions in non-model fish species remains limited due to their diversity and the scarcity of common biomarkers. In the present study, four major brain parts, the telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon and rhombencephalon, were isolated in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides. Within these parts, nine brain regions and 74 nuclei were further identified through morphological and cytoarchitectonic analysis. Transcriptome analysis revealed a total of

Transcriptomic analysis of the adaptation to prolonged starvation of the insect-dwelling Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes.

Trypanosoma cruzi is a digenetic unicellular parasite that alternates between a blood-sucking insect and a mammalian, host causing Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis. In the insect gut, the parasite differentiates from the non-replicative trypomastigote forms that arrive upon blood ingestion to the non-infective replicative epimastigote forms. Epimastigotes develop into infective non-replicative metacyclic trypomastigotes in the rectum and are delivered via the feces. In addition to these parasite stages, transitional forms have been reported. The insect-feeding behavior, characterized

Entry into puberty is reflected in changes in hormone production but not in testicular receptor expression in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

BACKGROUND: Puberty in male Atlantic salmon in aquaculture can start as early as after the first winter in seawater, stunts growth and entails welfare problems due to the maturation-associated loss of osmoregulation capacity in seawater. A better understanding of the regulation of puberty is the basis for developing improved cultivation approaches that avoid these problems. Our aim here was to identify morphological and molecular markers signaling the initiation of, and potential involvement in, testis maturation. METHODS: In the first experiment, we monitored for the first time in large Atla

De novo assembly and analysis of changes in the protein-coding transcriptome of the freshwater shrimp Paratya australiensis (Decapoda: Atyidae) in response to acid sulfate drainage water.

BACKGROUND: The atyid shrimp Paratya australiensis occurs in surface freshwater habitats throughout eastern Australia and has been used to study the ecotoxicology of contaminants such as pesticides and metals. The acidification of surface water that can occur after acid sulfate material in soils and sediments is oxidised and subsequently re-wetted is a serious environmental issue in coastal regions and inland riverine floodplains worldwide. Solubilisation of soil-associated minerals can result in high waterborne concentrations of mineral salts and dissolved metals, which together with low pH r

Histochemical and ultrastructural characterization of the gills in tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier (Péron & Lesueur, 1822): Structural strategies for functional adaptation.

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a dominant marine elasmobranch predator whose respiratory physiology and gill structure enable the oxygen uptake necessary for its significant ecological role in sustaining balance within oceanic environments. The present study investigated the histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics of gill tissue in the tiger shark to elucidate the morphological adaptations that enable efficient respiration in marine environments. Histologically, the gills were housed in antero-posteriorly compressed gill pouches, with the first pair being hemib
