Rhodococcus erythropolis strain S1 uses the gentisate pathway to metabolize salicylate and m-hydroxybenzoate and the protocatechuate pathway to degrade p-hydroxybenzoate. m-Hydroxybenzoate 6-hydroxylase was induced by growth on m-hydroxybenzoate or gentisate, and salicylate 5-hydroxylase only by growth on salicylate. p-Hydroxybenzoate 3-hydroxylase could be induced only by growth on p-hydroxybenzoate. m-Hydroxybenzoate or p-hydroxybenzoate could repress the induction of salicylate 5-hydroxylase. Maleylpyruvate isomerase in the gentisate pathway did not require reduced glutathione.

Cosmetic preservatives are widely used to ensure microbiological stability, yet their health risk assessment requires an understanding of dermal penetration mechanisms, interactions with the skin barrier, and cellular responses. This review presents mechanistic aspects of toxicity across major preservative classes, including parabens, formaldehyde donors, benzyl alcohol and its derivatives, isothiazolinones, sorbic acid, and benzoic acid systems, integrating physicochemical descriptors with data on percutaneous penetration, stratum corneum (SC) retention, and systemic distribution. Inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) are rare genetic conditions that disrupt normal biochemical pathways, leading to potentially life-threatening metabolic imbalances. Early diagnosis, often through newborn screening, and treatment can significantly improve outcomes, but pharmacological management presents unique challenges that are amplified by developmental immaturity, altered pharmacokinetics, and heightened sensitivity to drug excipients. The selection of excipients becomes especially important in IMDs such as primary carnitine deficiency (PCD), where lifelong supplementation is required.

Approximately 5 years ago, we proposed the establishment of a new category of ototoxicants: environmental ototoxicants, in addition to the recognized categories of occupational and drug-related ototoxicants. Since the publication of our review, the scientific literature has confirmed the potential for hearing impairment (HI) caused by the general population's exposure to various chemicals. However, the extent of this exposure's contribution to the global incidence of hearing loss (HL) has yet to be estimated. Due to the growing health, financial, and social challenges related to HL in the gene

Biomonitoring of environmental chemical exposures among individuals with substance use disorder is scarce, although they may experience a distinct spectrum of exposures compared to the general population. We measured 121 environmental chemicals including bactericides, benzophenones, bisphenols, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, organophosphate esters, parabens, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the urine of 200 overdose patients (presenting at emergency department in hospitals) from New York State, USA. Forty-eight analytes were detected in over 70 % of the urine samples,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are xenobiotic chemicals that disrupt hormone signaling and homeostasis within the human body. Accumulative evidence proposes that EDs could affect systemic hormone balance and local microbial communities, including the female genital tract (FGT) microbiome. The FGT microbiome, and especially the vaginal microbiota, contributes significantly to reproductive health maintenance, defense against infection, and favorable pregnancy outcomes. Disruption of the delicate microbial environment is associated with conditions like bacterial vaginosis, infe

Processed foods, accounting for most consumable food categories today, contain considerable amounts of food additives. Food additives are substances added to food products to improve taste, consistency, appearance, or shelf life. Various food additives, such as phthalates, bisphenol A, tartrazine, erythrosine, artificial sweeteners, and parabens, have been identified as potential sources of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in processed foods. EDCs are substances that frequently interfere with the regular functioning of the endocrine system, creating an unusual environment in the biologica

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Uterine leiomyoma (fibroids) is a gynecologic disorder impacting the majority of women in the United States. When symptomatic, these noncancerous tumors can cause severe morbidity including pelvic pain, menorrhagia, and infertility. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may represent a modifiable risk factor. The aim of this review is to summarize recent human and experimental evidence on EDCs exposures and fibroids.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple EDCs are associated with fibroid outcomes and/or processes including phthalates, parabens, environmental phenols, alternate plasticiz

A capillary column was modified with a soluble zinc(II)-derived metal-organic cage (MOC) [Zn2L] as the stationary phase to obtain a new coating layer for use in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. The inner surface of the capillary was first coated with a layer of polydopamine. Then, a solution of the MOC in dichloromethane was introduced into the capillary upon which it is bonded both covalently and non-covalently. The resulting coating layer on the capillary was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results demonstrated the s

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), including antibiotics, azole anti-fungals, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, lipid regulators, parabens, antiseptics, and bisphenol A, were investigated in groundwater and reservoirs in the vicinity of two municipal landfills in the metropolis of Guangzhou, South China. Dehydroerythromycin, sulfamethoxazole, fluconazole, salicylic acid, methylparaben, triclosan, and bisphenol A were the mostly frequently detected PPCPs in the groundwater at low ng L(-1) levels. In the reservoirs, the PPCPs were widely detected at higher frequencies and conc

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are substances that cause adverse health effects via endocrine-mediated mechanisms in an intact organism or its progeny or (sub) populations. Purported EDCs in personal care products include 4-MBC (UV filter) or parabens that showed oestrogenic activity in screening tests, although regulatory toxicity studies showed no adverse effects on reproductive endpoints. Hormonal potency is the key issue of the safety of EDCs. Oestrogen-based drugs, e.g. the contraceptive pill or the synthetic oestrogen DES, possess potencies up to 7 orders of magnitude higher than those of PC

Thousands of contact antigens have been defined. It is, however, remarkable that only a small group of substances (15 to 20) have proved to be frequent or otherwise important causes of allergic contact dermatitis. In agreement with reports from comparable centres, metals are high up on the "hitlist" of frequent allergens (nickel 24%, cobalt 9%, chromates 6%), followed by ingredients of cosmetics and toiletries (fragrances 16%, balsam of Peru 10%, Kathon 5%), whilst already way back are topical medicines (neomycin 4%, parabens 3%, lanolin 2%, benzocaine 1%) and rubber additives (thiuram-mix 2%

BACKGROUND: Gallstone disease is a prevalent digestive disorder with substantial global socioeconomic burden. Propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (PP), a widely used paraben preservative, exhibits potential metabolic and hepatic toxicity, yet its role in gallstone pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the causal association between PP exposure and gallstone formation and the underlying mechanism.
METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. Network toxicology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation were

Obesogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) belong to the group of environmental contaminants, which can adversely affect human health. A growing body of evidence supports that chronic exposure to EDCs can contribute to a rapid increase in obesity among adults and children, especially in wealthy industrialized countries with a high production of widely used industrial chemicals such as plasticizers (bisphenols and phthalates), parabens, flame retardants, and pesticides. The main source of human exposure to obesogenic EDCs is through diet, particularly with the consumption of contaminated

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) act on peripheral endocrine organs or interfere with general endocrine pathways. Several EDCs alter the central regulation of neuroendocrine pathways, and affect neurological functions, and as such can be classified as neurotoxic molecules. Environmental pollutants classified as EDCs and affecting the central nervous system include perfluoroalcanes, parabens, phthalates, organotins, bisphenols, benzophenones, polychlorinated biphenyls, and dioxins. In this review we provide a brief description of these families of EDCs. We report and compare the EDC concen
