A systematic review of controlled trials on visual stress using Intuitive Overlays or the Intuitive Colorimeter.

Claims that coloured filters aid reading date back 200 years and remain controversial. Some claims, for example, that more than 10% of the general population and 50% of people with dyslexia would benefit from coloured filters lack sound evidence and face validity. Publications with such claims typically cite research using methods that have not been described in the scientific literature and lack a sound aetiological framework. Notwithstanding these criticisms, some researchers have used more rigorous selection criteria and methods of prescribing coloured filters that were developed at a UK Me

Voice identity discrimination in schizophrenia.

Voices provide a wealth of socially-relevant information, including cues to a speaker's identity and emotion. Deficits recognising emotion from voice have been extensively described in schizophrenia, and linked specifically to auditory hallucinations (AH), but relatively little attention has been given to examining the ability to analyse speaker identity. Hence, the current study assessed the ability to discriminate between different speakers in people with schizophrenia (including 33 with and 32 without AH) compared to 32 healthy controls. Participants rated the degree of perceived identity s

Spatiotemporal visual function in tinted lens wearers.

PURPOSE: Tinted lenses have been widely publicized as a successful new treatment for reading disorders and visual stress in children. The present study was designed to investigate a variety of visual deficits reported by children who experience high levels of visual stress and perceptual distortions when reading (Meares-Irlen syndrome; MIS) and to assess the improvements in visual comfort they report when tinted lenses are worn. METHODS: Twenty children (13.1 +/- 0.9 years of age) were recruited who had successfully worn tinted lenses for at least 6 months and were compared with an age-matche

Reversal of vision metamorphopsia: clinical and anatomical characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Metamorphopsia is a visual illusion that distorts the size, shape, or inclination of objects. Reversal of vision metamorphopsia (RVM) is a rare transient form of metamorphopsia described as an upside-down, 180 degrees rotation of the visual field in the coronal plane. The pathophysiological characteristics of RVM remain unclear. DESIGN: Patients with RVM had a complete neurologic examination during or shortly after an episode of metamorphopsia, with particular emphasis on gaze disorders, visual fields, visually guided hand movements, and perceptual or cognitive deficits. Workup in

Brief report: thought disorder in Asperger syndrome: comparison with high-functioning autism.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a pervasive developmental disorder generally regarded as a variant of autism. While it has been included in the ICD-10 and DSM-IV as a distinct diagnostic entity, it is still unclear to what extent it differs from high-functioning autism (HFA). Persons with HFA have been reported to show a variety of deficits of thought processes. Abnormalities such as poor reality testing, perceptual distortions, and areas of cognitive slippage have been described using the Rorschach inkblot test (Dykens, Volkmar, & Glick, 1991). Since AS has been conceptualized as a mild variant of

A digital audio workstation approach for matching the sound quality of speech and music for single-sided deaf patients fit with cochlear implants.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implant (CI) patients who are single-sided deaf can match the sound quality of speech presented to their CI ear and speech presented to their normal hearing ear. Previous work using this patient population has generated acoustic approximations of CI sound quality for speech, achieving high similarity ratings through interactive manipulation of sound parameters such as filtering, pitch shifting, and spectral smearing. The present study aimed to extend this approach to music. METHODS: A digital audio workstation (DAW) methodology was developed for generating sound quality

Long-term impact of tongue reduction on speech intelligibility, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour in a child with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

The purpose of the present case study was to determine the long-term impact of partial glossectomy (using the keyhole technique) on overall speech intelligibility and articulation in a Dutch-speaking child with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). Furthermore the present study is meant as a contribution to the further delineation of the phonation, resonance, articulation and language characteristics and oral behaviour in a child with BWS. Detailed information on the speech and language characteristics of children with BWS may lead to better guidance of pediatric management programs. The child's

Self-face recognition activates a frontoparietal "mirror" network in the right hemisphere: an event-related fMRI study.

Self-recognition has been demonstrated by a select number of primate species and is often used as an index of self-awareness. Whether a specialized neural mechanism for self-face recognition in humans exists remains unclear. We used event-related fMRI to investigate brain regions selectively activated by images of one's own face. Ten right-handed normal subjects viewed digital morphs between their own face and a gender-matched familiar other presented in a random sequence. Subjects were instructed to press a button with the right hand if the image looked like their own face, and another button

Normative Ranges for Auditory Brainstem Response Wave I Amplitude: A Potential Diagnostic Indicator of Cochlear Deafferentation.

PURPOSE: While cochlear synaptopathy has limited impact on auditory thresholds, there is increasing evidence that cochlear deafferentation is associated with auditory perceptual deficits. However, there is currently no means for diagnosing synaptopathy or deafferentation in individual patients. The objectives of this study were to establish normative ranges for auditory brainstem response (ABR) Wave I amplitude, a measure sensitive to synaptopathy in animals, in a population at low risk for cochlear deafferentation and then compare a population at high risk for deafferentation to the normative

A case of recurrent depressive disorder presenting with Alice in Wonderland syndrome: psychopathology and pre- and post-treatment FDG-PET findings.

BACKGROUND: Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare neuropsychiatric syndrome that typically manifests in distortion of extrapersonal visual image, altered perception of one's body image, and a disturbed sense of the passage of distance and time. Several conditions have been reported to contribute to AIWS, although its biological basis is still unknown. Here, we present the first case demonstrating a clear concurrence of recurrent depressive disorder and AIWS. The clinical manifestations and pre- and post-treatment fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomographic (FDG-PET) images provide

Exploring how patients, caregivers and clinicians experience pain across therapeutic areas in Italy: a multi-centre narrative medicine project.

INTRODUCTION: Despite increased awareness of its multi-dimensional nature, pain remains often underestimated, and its management across different therapeutic areas remains complex. A patient-centred approach is needed to bridge the gap between clinical assessment and individual experience. This project aimed to explore the pain experience across different therapeutic areas through narrative medicine (NM). DIAMOND, the project name, is not an acronym but a symbol meant to shed light on physical and mental pain. METHODS: DIAMOND involved 19 Italian centres and collected narratives from patients

Abnormal auditory neural activity in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypotonia, progressive muscle weakness and atrophy caused by progressive loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord and lower cranial nerve nuclei. The disease has also been associated with sensory neuropathies affecting the visual, somatosensory and auditory pathways. This case-control study investigated auditory neural function and perceptual ability in children and young adults with SMA. Twenty individuals with genetically confirmed SMA of varying severity (Types 1-3) participated. Sixteen children/young adults

Regional Blood Flow Signatures of Opioidergic Modulation of Ketamine in Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Crossover Study.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence suggests that the opioid system may modulate ketamine's rapid antidepressant effects. The objective of this study was to test whether opioid system modulation via naltrexone alters ketamine's acute effects on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in major depressive disorder (MDD), and whether these changes relate to symptom measures and map onto receptor density profiles. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, 26 adults (18-50 years of age) with MDD completed two treatment sessions: oral naltrexone 50 mg or placebo, each followed by intravenou

Akinetopsia: a systematic review on visual motion blindness.

BACKGROUND: Akinetopsia, or visual motion blindness, is a perceptual distortion characteristic of Alice in Wonderland syndrome in which people see moving objects as disjointed 'jumps' or 'freeze frames.' Despite its profound impact, the condition remains poorly understood beyond the established centrality of cortical area V5/MT in visual motion perception. METHODS: We carried out a systematic review of case descriptions on motion blindness, including those where additional symptoms were described. RESULTS: Our search yielded data on 25 clinical and 27 experimental cases, the latter induced b

Fenestration Approach for Arytenoid Adduction in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: Several surgical techniques have been reported for the treatment of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Although the fenestration approach has recently been applied for arytenoid adduction (AA) in some cases, long-term large-cohort studies on its usefulness are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the long-term voice outcomes of this technique in patients with UVFP. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: A total of 168 patients with UVFP underwent laryngoplasty comprising AA performed through fenestration of the thyroid ala combined with a type I thyroplasty (

Evoked Potentials Reveal Noise Exposure-Related Central Auditory Changes Despite Normal Audiograms.

Purpose Complaints of auditory perceptual deficits, such as tinnitus and difficulty understanding speech in background noise, among individuals with clinically normal audiograms present a perplexing problem for audiologists. One potential explanation for these "hidden" auditory deficits is loss of the synaptic connections between the inner hair cells and their afferent auditory nerve fiber targets, a condition that has been termed cochlear synaptopathy. In animal models, cochlear synaptopathy can occur due to aging or exposure to noise or ototoxic drugs and is associated with reduced auditory

Visual system assessment for predicting a transition to psychosis.

The field of psychiatry is far from perfect in predicting which individuals will transition to a psychotic disorder. Here, we argue that visual system assessment can help in this regard. Such assessments have generated medium-to-large group differences with individuals prior to or near the first psychotic episode or have shown little influence of illness duration in larger samples of more chronic patients. For example, self-reported visual perceptual distortions-so-called visual basic symptoms-occur in up to 2/3rds of those with non-affective psychosis and have already longitudinally predicted

Weight misperception and its associations with eating disorder symptoms over the course of residential eating disorder treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Although individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often experience significant body dissatisfaction and perceptual body image distortions, the presence and impact of weight misperception in clinical samples have been minimally examined. The aims of this study were to quantify weight misperception in individuals with EDs, examine whether weight misperception predicts ED severity at treatment discharge, and explore changes in weight misperception across treatment. METHOD: Participants were 98 women seeking residential treatment for their ED who reported weekly on their perceived weigh
