Rhabdomyolysis is a triad syndrome of myalgia, muscle weakness and myoglobinuria due to muscle necrosis. Trauma, exertions, strenuous exercise, infections, metabolic and electrolyte disorders, drug overdoses, toxins and genetic defects are the most common causes of rhabdomyolysis. The etiologies of foot drop are diverse. A few cases of rhabdomyolysis-associated foot drop are reported in the literature. We present five patients with foot drop secondary to rhabdomyolysis; two underwent neurolysis and distal nerve transfer (superficial peroneal nerve to the deep peroneal nerve) surgeries and foll

High-arched feet affect approximately 10%-15% of the general population. Although the relationship between plantar pressure and bilateral symmetry is well studied, there is limited evidence regarding the use of Symmetry Index and pressure platforms. The objective of the study is to compare dynamic foot pressures and Symmetry Index during gait between subjects with Pes Cavus and subjects with normal feet. The analysis of asymmetric pressure patterns could benefit from studies that compare dynamic foot pressures and Symmetry Index values in subjects with high-arched feet and normal feet. This an

CONTEXT: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a condition characterized by range-of-motion, neuromuscular, and postural-control deficits and subjective disability, reinjury, and posttraumatic osteoarthritis. Differences have been reported in kinematics, kinetics, surface electromyography (EMG), and ground reaction forces during functional tasks performed by those with CAI. These measures are often collected independently, and the research on collecting measures simultaneously during a movement task is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the kinematics and kinetics of the lower extremity, vertical gro

BACKGROUND: Treatment of spastic planovalgus feet is challenging, especially in patients with severe and rigid deformities. The available techniques do provide some correction but not at the site of the deformity and sometimes the correction is lost over time. We describe a new surgical approach at the site of the deformity.
TECHNIQUE: Indications for the surgery included adolescents or young adults with severe and rigid planovalgus deformities of the feet resulting from cerebral palsy. Through a medial approach, arthrodesis of the talonavicular, navicular-medial cuneiform, and medial cuneifo

Depression is a well-recognised effect of long-term treatment with interferon-alpha (IFN-α), a widely used treatment for chronic viral hepatitis and malignancy. In addition to the emotional disturbances, high incidences of painful symptoms such as headache and joint pain have also been reported following IFN-α treatment. The endocannabinoid system plays an important role in emotional and nociceptive processing, however it is unknown whether repeated IFN-α administration induces alterations in this system. The present study investigated nociceptive responding in the IFN-α-induced mouse model of

Voltage-dependent Na-currents were studied, using whole cell voltage clamp, in acutely dissociated, large (mostly Abeta-fiber type) cutaneous afferent dorsal root ganglia neurons (L(4) and L(5)) from the adult rat. Cells were dissociated 14-17 days after axotomy. Control and axotomized neurons were identified via the retrograde marker hydroxy-stilbamide (fluorogold) which was injected into the lateral and plantar region of the skin of the foot and were studied using whole cell patch clamp techniques within 12-20 h of dissociation and plating. Cells were dissociated 14-17 days after injury. Bot

BACKGROUND: Very few articles describe the compensations in gait caused by limb-length discrepancy (LLD). Song and colleagues explored kinematic and kinetic variables utilizing work equalization as a marker of successful compensation for LLD. They found no difference in strategies based on the location of pathology. The purpose of this study was to define the various gait patterns in patients with LLD and the impact of these compensations on gait kinetics.
METHODS: Forty-three children (mean age 12.9±3.7 y) with LLD >2 cm were evaluated in the motion lab using a VICON motion system with 2 AMT

To examine how medial longitudinal arch morphology relates to a multidomain set of static biomechanical correlates—covering structure (forefoot/rearfoot alignment), loading/pressure behavior, arch “spring-like” function, and postural-control surrogates—as a pragmatic screening framework in university students. In this cross-sectional study, 1,078 university students (569 males, 509 females; mean age 20.18 ± 1.43 years) underwent standardized quiet-standing assessments. Arch height, hallux valgus angle, and heel valgus angle were measured using a 3D foot scanner, and plantar-pressure–derived ou

BACKGROUND: The present video article demonstrates the use of Evans and Cotton osteotomies with porous titanium wedges for the treatment of pediatric flatfoot. Pediatric flatfoot is not commonly painful or disabling and usually resolves as the arch elevates spontaneously. However, in cases of flatfoot that persist despite nonoperative treatment, symptoms such as severe activity-related pain and medial foot calluses are an indication for surgical intervention3. The aims of treatment in pediatric patients are to correct anatomical deformity and reduce pain while maintaining mobility.

UNLABELLED: Metatarsal fractures are one of the most common injuries of the foot, accounting for approximately 5% to 6% of all fractures confronted in the outpatient setting1. Approximately 45% to 70% of these fractures involve the fifth metatarsal, which have been described using a 3 zonal approach in 1993 by Lawrence and Botte2. Zone 2 fractures are difficult to manage given their retrograde vascular supply, leading to higher rates of nonunion1,3. Jones fractures (zone 2) are primarily treated surgically, with the 2 main methods being intramedullary screw fixation and plate fixation3. Surgic

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondromas (OCs) are benign hamartomatous lesions composed of cartilage and bone, arising from aberrant growth-plate cartilage. They characteristically project from the bone surface through the cortex and grow by endochondral ossification beneath the periosteum. Lesion growth usually parallels skeletal growth and typically ceases after physeal closure, although minimal growth of the cartilage cap may persist and generally stops by the third decade of life. This developmental mechanism explains the predilection for involvement of the distal femur, proximal tibia, and proximal

BACKGROUND: Only few studies have been conducted on leg length discrepancy (LLD) in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA). This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived LLD (pLLD) and structural LLD (sLLD) in patients with advanced OA and to determine the factors influencing both LLDs. This retrospective study aimed to answer the following questions: (1) are older adults less likely to perceive LLD than younger adults? (2) is there a relationship between pLLD and sLLD? and (3) is pLLD associated with patient satisfaction?
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that older adults are less

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Currently, operative treatment is preferred in dislocated calcaneal fractures. Most frequently used is the extended lateral approach, the disadvantage of which is the risk of early complications. Therefore, less invasive operative techniques are sought that would reduce the risk of such complications. The presented study aimed to compare the two different surgical approaches with respect to the restoration of gait stereotype using the objective pedobarography. We assume that the limited operative approach in osteosynthesis of intra-articular calcaneal fractures results in

BACKGROUND: Zones 2 and 3 fifth metatarsal fractures are often treated with intramedullary fixation due to an increased risk of nonunion. A previous 3-dimensional (3D) computerized tomography (CT) imaging study by our group determined that the screw should stop short of the bow of the metatarsal and be larger than the commonly used 4.5 millimeter (mm) screw. This study determines how these guidelines translate to operative outcomes, measured using Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Physical Function (PF) and Pain Interference (PI) surveys. Radiographic variables

As advances in cancer therapies have improved cancer-related survival, novel therapeutics have also introduced a variety of dermatologic toxicities, and an increased number of patients are living with these sequalae. Women with cancer in particular experience a spectrum of dermatologic conditions that affect their skin, hair, nail, and mucosal surfaces. Studies have shown that these toxic effects can significantly affect quality of life and alter a woman's self-image, cultural identity, femininity, sexuality, and mental health. In severe instances, dermatologic toxicities may even disrupt canc
