Characterizing heterogeneity in emotional and behavioral problems: Latent class analysis with 507,188 children and adolescents and associations with mobile gaming addiction behavior.

BACKGROUND: While mobile gaming addiction (MGA) behavior is increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents, the role of specific emotional-behavioral profiles - particularly their latent patterns - in associating with MGA behavior remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine these associations and age-related variations. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 507,188 participants aged 6-18 years in the Children's Growth Environment, Lifestyle, and Physical and Mental Health Development Project, conducted in Guangzhou, China, in 2020. Latent class analysis was performed on parent-re

Associations of emotional/behavioral problems with accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior, physical activity and step counts in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: The evidence for associations of emotional/behavioral status with sedentary behavior (SB), physical activity (PA) and step counts is scarce in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Also, ASD-related deficiencies may affect actual levels of PA. We aimed to describe accelerometer-measured SB, PA and step counts in children with ASD, and to examine the associations of emotional/behavioral problems with SB, PA and step counts after assessing associations between accelerometer-measured SB, PA and step counts and ASD-related deficiencies. METHODS: A total of 93 ASD children, age

Maternal Childhood Maltreatment History and Child Behavior Problems: Developmental Patterns and Mediation via Maternal Depressive Symptoms and Parenting Behavior.

Maternal exposure to childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with offspring behavioral problems; however, little work has examined these associations longitudinally across child development. This study examined the effects of maternal history of CM on trajectories of child internalizing and externalizing behavior measured from toddlerhood to preschool, and the role of maternal depressive symptoms and parenting behavior as potential mediators. Participants included 115 mother-child dyads recruited from a hospital maternity ward. Maternal CM was measured at 3-months postpartum. At 18, 36, and

Adoptive parent hostility and children's peer behavior problems: examining the role of genetically informed child attributes on adoptive parent behavior.

Socially disruptive behavior during peer interactions in early childhood is detrimental to children's social, emotional, and academic development. Few studies have investigated the developmental underpinnings of children's socially disruptive behavior using genetically sensitive research designs that allow examination of parent-on-child and child-on-parent (evocative genotype-environment correlation [rGE]) effects when examining family process and child outcome associations. Using an adoption-at-birth design, the present study controlled for passive genotype-environment correlation and directl

Genetics and developmental psychopathology: 2. The main effects of genes and environment on behavioral problems in the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development.

Little is known about the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to risk for juvenile psychopathology. The Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development allows these contributions to be estimated. A population-based, unselected sample of 1412 Caucasian twin pairs aged 8-16 years was ascertained through Virginia schools. Assessment of the children involved semi-structured face-to-face interviews with both twins and both parents using the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment (CAPA). Self-report questionnaires were also completed by parents, children, and teachers. Me

Adolescent alcohol-drinking frequency and problem-gambling severity: adolescent perceptions regarding problem-gambling prevention and parental/adult behaviors and attitudes.

BACKGROUND: The study examined in adolescents how alcohol-drinking frequency relates to gambling-related attitudes and behaviors and perceptions of both problem-gambling prevention strategies and adult (including parental) behaviors/attitudes. METHODS: A survey assessing alcohol, gambling, and health and functioning measures in 1609 high school students. Students were stratified into low-frequency/nondrinking and high-frequency-drinking groups, and into low-risk and at-risk/problematic gambling groups. RESULTS: High-frequency drinking was associated with at-risk/problematic gambling (χ(2)(1,

Personality types in childhood: relations to latent trajectory classes of problem behavior and overreactive parenting across the transition into adolescence.

This study investigated relations among children's personality types, trajectories of internalizing and externalizing problems, and overreactive parenting across 6 years. Latent Class Analysis of the Big 5 personality dimensions (modeled as latent factors, based on mother, father and teacher reports) for 429 children (mean age 8 years at Time 1) replicated the Resilient, Under-, and Overcontroller types. Latent Class Growth Analysis of externalizing and internalizing problems (modeled as latent factors, based on mother and father reports), revealed that Undercontrollers were at greater risk of

Adaptive Functioning, Sensory Processing, and Behavioral Problems in Autistic Children: The Moderating Role of Gender.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently experience elevated emotional and behavioral difficulties, yet factors associated with variability remain incompletely understood. Adaptive functioning and sensory processing differences have been linked to behavioral problems, but little is known about whether associations differ between boys and girls. This study examined relationships between adaptive functioning, sensory processing, and behavioral problems in children with ASD, focusing on gender as a moderator. The purposive sampling included 110 autistic children (M age = 85.61 mont

Examining bidirectional associations between overprotective parenting and adolescent problem behaviors: a multiverse analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research on overprotective parenting in adolescence has predominantly used cross-sectional designs, limiting attention to possible bidirectional associations between such parenting and adolescents' problem behaviors. The few longitudinal studies available have yielded mixed findings regarding the direction of effects between overprotective parenting and adolescent outcomes, which may stem from substantive and design-related choices (e.g., type of informant). The present study systematically investigated the potentially bidirectional interplay between overprotective parenting and ad

Parental Burnout and Early-Childhood Behavioral Problems: Longitudinal Associations Beyond Maternal Depression.

BACKGROUND: Parenting is increasingly recognized as a highly demanding and stressful role that, in the absence of sufficient resources, may lead to parental burnout (PB). This risk may be particularly pronounced in the Russian context, where limited access to childcare for children under three and reduced extended family support coincide with strong social expectations of intensive parenting. Although PB and maternal depression frequently co-occur, it remains unclear whether PB exerts a unique influence on child development, especially during toddlerhood. The present study examined the associa

Links between Discipline Practices and Early Childhood Behavior Problems: Universal or Culture-Specific?

Harsh parental disciplinary approaches can negatively impact children emotionally and behaviorally, and early childhood mental health difficulties can impact later life functioning. We examined parental disciplinary approaches (i.e., inductive and power assertion approaches) during childhood in relation to internalizing, externalizing, and total behavior problems across 14 countries. We hypothesized that discipline practice indicators would explain both within- and between-group variance based on differential values, socialization goals, and acceptance of varying approaches across cultures. The Roots of Problematic Polydrug Use in Emotional Problems and Suicide Behavior: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Problematic polydrug use represents a relevant public health concern, with strong relationships with mental health problems and suicide behavior. Existing studies have just focused on problematic use, overlooking the potentially cumulative effect of coexisting substance use and addictive behaviors. This study aims to analyze the association between the polydrug use profile (no problematic use, problematic use of a single drug, and polydrug use) and mental health outcomes, specifically anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicide behavior. Methods: A sample of 1307

Neglect and Behavior Problems in Early Childhood: A Test of Indirect Effects Through Emotion Knowledge.

Neglected children are at-risk for behavior problems, although the processes by which such problems develop are poorly understood. We examined whether Emotion Knowledge (EK) mediated the relationship between neglect and young children's behavior problems. In a community sample (N = 127), neglect history was assessed at 4.0 years using Child Protective Services records (44% neglected); at 4.5 years children completed an EK assessment (expression recognition; expression labeling; and situational knowledge); and at 6- to 7-years teachers rated children's behavior problems on the Teacher Report Fo

Gestational diabetes mellitus and children's social-emotional development, behavioral problems, and psychological adjustment.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal cohort study investigated whether gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with 2- and 5-year-old children's social-emotional development and whether child sex moderates the association. METHODS: FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study recruited 3808 pregnant women 2011-2015 in Finnish Turku region and Åland Islands. Their children's social-emotional development at 2 years was measured by Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment (BITSEA) (N = 1444, GDM n = 227) and at 5 years by Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) (N = 1489, GDM n = 225). Sex-specific associations between placental corticotropin releasing hormone and problem behaviors in childhood.

Placental corticotropin-releasing hormone (pCRH) is a neuroactive peptide produced in high concentrations in mid-late pregnancy, during key periods of fetal brain development. Some evidence suggests that higher pCRH exposure during gestation is associated with adverse neurodevelopment, particularly in female offspring. In 858 mother-child dyads from the sociodemographically diverse CANDLE cohort (Memphis, TN), we examined: (1) the slope of pCRH rise in mid-late pregnancy and (2) estimated pCRH at delivery as a measure of cumulative prenatal exposure. When children were 4 years-old, mothers rep
