Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has over the last two decades begun to take the place of calcium hydroxide (CH) in the treatment of a variety of pulpal and periodontal healing complications following dental trauma. These conditions include teeth with: (i) exposed pulps, (ii) immature roots and pulp necrosis, (iii) root fractures and pulp necrosis located in the coronal part of the pulps, and (iv) external infection-related (inflammatory) root resorption. The main reasons for replacing CH with MTA in these situations have generally been the delayed effect when using CH to induce hard tissues,

Taurodontism is a morpho-anatomical change in the shape of the tooth in which the body of the tooth is enlarged and the roots are reduced in size. Although taurodontism is a dental rarity, this unusual radicular form should merit circumspect considerations in planning and treatment. Endodontic management in taurodont teeth has been described as complex and difficult. The present paper describes the successful completion of endodontic treatment in three taurodontic teeth with appropriate use of instruments and techniques and also emphasizes the need for post endodontic rehabilitation.

A 12-year-old patient sustained avulsions of both permanent maxillary central incisors. Subsequently, both teeth developed replacement resorption. The left incisor was extracted alio loco. The right incisor was treated by decoronation (removal of crown and pulp, but preservation of the root substance). Comparison of both sites demonstrated complete preservation of the height and width of the alveolar bone at the decoronation site, whereas the tooth extraction site showed considerable bone loss. In addition, some vertical bone apposition was found on top of the decoronated root. Decoronation is

Two hundred and fifty-three patients treated for dental emergencies at the University Hospital dental clinic over a three-month period were surveyed by telephone 24 to 48 hours and one year after treatment. The purpose was to investigate the success of treatment in resolving the chief complaint of pain and to determine the compliance with further dental care for the original dental problem. The results of the telephone survey showed that: patients available for questioning totaled 49.1% at 24 to 48 hours and 28.9% at one year; an 80.7% success rate was recorded in resolving pain within 24 to 4

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of studies to assess the effectiveness of cryotherapy as a possible adjuvant in anesthesia. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the impact of pretreatment intraoral ice packs, application of Endo-ice, and a combination of Endo-ice and intrapulpal ice sticks use on the effectiveness of pulpal anesthesia as an adjunct in the management of pain and dental anxiety in mandibular second molars with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP) against traditional inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) technique.

BACKGROUND: Woolly Hair Syndrome (WHS) is a rare birth condition that affects the structure of hair in non-black people. The pathogenesis is not yet defined. It is postulated that the hair follicle's desmosomes (specifically desmoplaquine, placoglobin and placofilin-1, which are cell structural proteins that keep the adhesion among close cells) would be altered in this pathology, leading to fragility in the cellular union. It is subdivided into two large groups: the localized or circumscribed variant and the generalized variant. From birth or first months of life, patients with WHS are clinica

This study examined the histological response of human dental pulp to Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as a pulp-capping agent, with or without Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Thirty-two premolars from 16 patients were treated in a split-mouth design: one side received MTA alone, the other MTA with diode laser-assisted haemostasis and decontamination. After 6 weeks, the teeth were extracted for histological analysis. Results showed that the group with LLLT had a higher incidence of complete dentine bridges (87.5% vs. 68.8%) and thicker bridges (> 0.25 mm: 81.3% vs. 68.8%), though differences w

Among injuries that affect permanent teeth, the most prevalent is an uncomplicated crown fracture. Currently, autogenous bonding of the fragments is still the procedure of choice to restore fractured anterior teeth if the fragments are recovered by the patient and taken to a dental office within a reasonable time in an appropriate storage medium. There is no study or case report in the literature regarding autogenous bonding of lower incisors. This study presents a case with a 17-year follow-up for a 9-year-old patient who underwent uncomplicated crown fractures of the permanent mandibular cen

Cardiovascular medicine treatments now include an increasing number of cardiac valve replacements; approximately 60,000 patients may undergo heart valve replacement per year. Dentists will be seeing an increasing number of patients who have undergone this surgical intervention. This paper will overview the types of valve replacements and suggested patient management in the dental setting. A case report of one such patient and the treatment provided is presented.

The subject of this paper was to study the behavior of the periapical tissues of dogs' teeth after biopulpectomy and dressing with calcium hydroxide or a corticosteroid-antibiotic association, before root canal filling with zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) or Sealapex sealers. The teeth were overinstrumented and dressed for 7 days before the root canal filling. The animals were sacrificed 180 days after treatment and the specimens were prepared for morphological analysis. Specimens treated with Sealapex presented a higher number of cases with biological closure than ZOE. When the root canals were fill

Previous studies have shown that there is a proliferation of nerves beneath the apices of pulpectomized teeth. This may be due to the inflammation induced after the procedure, resulting, perhaps, from the irritant nature of the materials used to fill the root canal. The experiment reported here was conducted to determine whether this inflammation was induced by the sealer rather than arising as a result of tissue damage and whether, if inflammation is eliminated or reduced, the neural changes are also reduced. In 12 young adult ferrets under general anaesthesia the pulps of the lower canine te
