Seasonality of the Rickettsia vectors Amblyomma ovale and Amblyomma sculptum on dogs in Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes of Minas Gerais, Brazil: Hypotheses for human rickettsiosis seasonality.

Free-ranging rural dogs in Brazil are parasitized by ticks from indigenous ixodofauna including Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma ovale, vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic Rainforest (ARF), respectively. Therefore, dogs are important sentinels and hosts for ticks and tick-borne diseases of public health relevance. This study evaluated abundance, and seasonal dynamics of these tick species infesting free-ranging rural dogs in two municipalities of Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil: Araguari (Cerrado biome remnants) and Guaxupé (Atlantic Forest remnants)

Tag, you're it!: viral diseases in native otters of south-central Chile due to coexistence with invasive American mink and domestic dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Biological invasions represent a significant epidemiological route for the introduction and dispersion of pathogens, facilitating disease emergence and transmission among native biodiversity. In the temperate rainforest ecoregion of south-central Chile, the native semiaquatic mustelid Lontra felina (marine otter) and L. provocax (southern river otter) coexist both sympatrically and syntopically with two invasive species-American mink (Neogale vison) and domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), that act as carriers and hosts of canine parvovirus and distemper. METHODOLOGY: To asses

A mobile hybrid deep learning approach for classifying 3D-like representations of Amazonian lizards.

Image classification is a highly significant field in machine learning (ML), especially when applied to address longstanding and challenging issues in the biological sciences, such as specie recognition and biodiversity conservation. In this study, we present the development of a hybrid machine learning-based tool suitable for deployment on mobile devices. This tool is aimed at processing and classifying three-dimensional samples of endemic lizard species from the Amazon rainforest. The dataset used in our experiment was collected at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG), Belém-PA, Brazil, a

Sublethal Effects of Cameroon Field-Used Pesticides on Growth and Organ Health in Archachatina marginata.

Cameroon rainforest region is not only an agricultural area with massive pesticide uses but also possesses factors that favor land snails' growth like Archachatina marginata. The present study aimed to assess the impact of sub-chronic exposure of commonly used pesticides in Cameroon, glyphosate, metalaxyl, and cypermethrin on the growth, survival, histological structure of key organs, and tissue residue levels in Archachatina marginata. Therefore, sub-adult (under 30 g) Archachatina marginata snails were exposed for 10 weeks, once a week to field-relevant concentrations of glyphosate (0.5 g/L)

Epidemiological profiles of norovirus genotypes in children with and without acute gastroenteritis from the northwestern Amazon region.

Noroviruses causes acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide, with children living in low-income areas aged ≤5 years being the most vulnerable. Histo-blood group antigens (HBGA) are recognized as attachment factors for human noroviruses and susceptibility of a given genotype is frequently dependent on the secretor phenotype mediated by FUT2 genotype. This retrospective study involved 734 children aged ≤5 years with AGE (cases group; 66 %, 485/734) or non-AGE (control group; 34 %, 249/734), from the Amazon rainforest (Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana) and in our previous studies, 87 % of children were

Social determinants of health among people working on informal gold mines in French Guiana: a multicentre cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health, such as living and working conditions, economical and environmental context and access to care, combine to impact the health of individuals and communities. In French Guiana (FG), the persons working in informal artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the rainforest are a particularly vulnerable population which lives in precarious conditions and far from the health system. Previous studies have demonstrated their high morbidity due to infectious diseases. This study aims to describe the social determinants of health in this specific population. M

Where boundaries become bridges: Mosquito community composition, key vectors, and environmental associations at forest edges in the central Brazilian Amazon.

Risk of spillover and spillback of mosquito-borne viruses in the neotropics, including yellow fever, dengue, Zika (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus), chikungunya, and Mayaro (Togaviridae: Alphavirus) viruses, is highest at ecotones where humans, monkeys, and mosquitoes coexist. With a view to identifying potential bridge vectors, we investigated changes in mosquito community composition and environmental variables at ground level at distances of 0, 500, 1000, and 2000 m from the edge of a rainforest reserve bordering the city of Manaus in the central Brazilian Amazon. During two rainy seasons in 2019

Mapping of Land Cover with Optical Images, Supervised Algorithms, and Google Earth Engine.

Crops and ecosystems constantly change, and risks are derived from heavy rains, hurricanes, droughts, human activities, climate change, etc. This has caused additional damages with economic and social impacts. Natural phenomena have caused the loss of crop areas, which endangers food security, destruction of the habitat of species of flora and fauna, and flooding of populations, among others. To help in the solution, it is necessary to develop strategies that maximize agricultural production as well as reduce land wear, environmental impact, and contamination of water resources. The generation

Anti-Mayaro virus activity of a hydroethanolic extract from Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L. G. Lohmann leaves.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mayaro fever is a neglected tropical disease. The region of the most significant circulation of the Mayaro virus (MAYV) is the Amazon rainforest, situated in remote areas that are difficult to access and where medicine is scarce. Thus, the regional population uses plants as an alternative for the treatment of various diseases. Fridericia chica is an endemic plant of tropical regions used in traditional medicine to treat fever, malaise, inflammation, and infectious diseases such as hepatitis B. However, its antiviral activity is poorly understood. AIM OF THE STU

Endemicity of Paragonimus and paragonimiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and mapping reveals stability of transmission in endemic foci for a multi-host parasite system.

Paragonimiasis is caused by zoonotic trematodes of Paragonimus spp., found in Asia, the Americas and Africa, particularly in tropical regions. These parasites have a complex, multi-host life cycle, with mammalian definitive hosts and larval stages cycling through two intermediate hosts (snails and freshwater decapod crustaceans). In Africa, paragonimiasis is particularly neglected, and remains the only human parasitic disease without a fully characterised life cycle. However paragonimiasis has potentially significant impacts on public health in Africa, and prevalence has likely been underestim

The impact of climate suitability, urbanisation, and connectivity on the expansion of dengue in 21st century Brazil.

Dengue is hyperendemic in Brazil, with outbreaks affecting all regions. Previous studies identified geographical barriers to dengue transmission in Brazil, beyond which certain areas, such as South Brazil and the Amazon rainforest, were relatively protected from outbreaks. Recent data shows these barriers are being eroded. In this study, we explore the drivers of this expansion and identify the current limits to the dengue transmission zone. We used a spatio-temporal additive model to explore the associations between dengue outbreaks and temperature suitability, urbanisation, and connectivity

Records of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on humans and distribution of spotted-fever cases and its tick vectors in Paraná State, southern Brazil.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is the deadliest rickettsiosis in the world. Although the epidemiology of the disease has been established in Brazil, there are still limited data available on distribution of tick vectors and tick species parasitizing humans in the country, particularly in Paraná State. The State of Paraná is located in the southern region of the country and is covered by two biomes: Atlantic rainforest and Cerrado. Thus, the aims of this study were i) to map the distribution of SF tick vectors, ii) to describe and map the distribution of human parasitism by ticks, and iii) to ma

Exploring morphological generality in the Old World monkey postcranium using an ecomorphological framework.

Nearly all primates are ecologically dependent on trees, but they are nonetheless found in an enormous range of habitats, from highly xeric environments to dense rainforest. Most primates have a relatively 'generalised' skeleton, enabling locomotor flexibility and facilitating other crucial functions, such as manual foraging and grooming. This paper explores the associations between habitat, locomotion and morphology in the forelimbs of cercopithecids (Old World monkeys), contextualising their skeletal ecomorphological patterns with those of other mammals, and complementing functional morpholo

Timing of breeding in variable environments: tropical birds as model systems.

Animals need to adjust reproductive decisions to environmental seasonality. In contrast to species from the well-studied temperate zones, little is known for tropical birds about the environmental cues that stimulate reproductive activity and the physiological mechanisms that regulate reproduction. I am investigating the environmental and endocrine mechanisms that underlie the timing of reproduction in spotted antbirds from the near-equatorial Panamanian rainforest and in small ground finches from the equatorial arid Galápagos islands. Spotted antbirds live in a fairly predictable seasonal env

Association of the occurrence of Brazilian spotted fever and Atlantic rain forest fragmentation in the São Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil.

Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. In the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) it is transmitted by Amblyomma aureolatum ticks. In this region, annual lethality of the disease can reach 80% and spatial occurrence depends on environmental factors and more particularly on the presence and interaction of domestic and wild carnivores as well as the presence and characteristics of the remnant Atlantic Rain Forest patches. This study analyzed the association between forest fragmentation and its influence on the risk of occurrence of the

The howler monkey genome provides new insights into the distinctive howling and folivorous adaptations of New World monkeys.

BACKGROUND: New World monkeys (Platyrrhini), a highly diverse primate lineage endemic to Mexico, Central and South America, include howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.), one of the most ecologically successful genera in the region. They have evolved key adaptations including a specialized folivorous diet and distinctive howling calls that carry over long distances in tropical rainforests, conferring critical survival advantages. However, the genetic underpinnings of these adaptations-specifically, the genes involved in fiber digestion, fermentation, and metabolic adaptation for folivory, and those r

Jumping plant-lice of the tribe Paurocephalini (Hemiptera: Psylloidea: Liviidae) in Brazil.

The predominantly tropical tribe Paurocephalini of jumping plant-lice currently consists of seven genera and 94 described species worldwide, of which the genera Klyveria Burckhardt et al. and Melanastera Serbina et al. have been recorded from Brazil with two and one species, respectively. Here we review the taxonomy of the Brazilian species based on material collected from extensive fieldwork carried out in 15 states over the last decade. One species of Klyveria and 59 species of Melanastera are newly described, bringing the number of extant Klyveria spp. to three (both in Brazil and worldwide

Time-scaled phylogeography of complete Zika virus genomes using discrete and continuous space diffusion models.

Zika virus (ZIKV), a vector-borne infectious agent that has recently been associated with neurological diseases and congenital microcephaly, was first reported in the Western hemisphere in early 2015. A number of authors have reconstructed its epidemiological history using advanced phylogenetic approaches, and the majority of Zika phylogeography studies have used discrete diffusion models. Continuous space diffusion models make it possible to infer the possible origin of the virus in real space by reconstructing its ancestral location on the basis of geographical coordinates deduced from the l

Common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis Linnaeus, 1758): food and medicine for people in the Amazon.

BACKGROUND: In the Amazon rainforest, biodiversity is a significant resource for traditional communities, as it can be used as a relevant source of protein and it has a promising zootherapeutic potential. Studies on knowledge and ways how local peoples use the fauna are still incipient. This paper presents both the knowledge on and food and medicinal uses of common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) by riverine communities in an Amazon floodplain region. METHODS: The study was conducted with riverine communities in the municipality of Abaetetuba, Pará, Brazil. The main methods used were structur
