Development of thyroid dysfunction among women with excessive iodine intake--A 3-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: Thyroid dysfunction can be a result of excessive iodine intake, which may have adverse health consequences, particularly for women in fertile age. In 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional study among lactating women with excessive iodine intake in the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria and found a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction. Three years later, we conducted a follow-up study to monitor the iodine situation and explore whether thyroid dysfunction still was highly prevalent when the women no longer were post-partum. None of the women were treated for hyper- or hypothyroidism

The mental health, quality of life and life satisfaction of internally displaced persons living in Nakuru County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are among the most vulnerable people in the world today. Previous research highlights that conflict-induced forced displacement can cause problems with mental health and wellbeing. This study aimed to contribute to this body of knowledge by investigating the mental health, quality of life, and life satisfaction among IDPs living in Nakuru, Kenya. METHODS: A questionnaire that included the General Health Questionnaire-12, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and a modified version of the WHO Quality of Life-BREF tool was used for data collection. The qu

Effect of early detection and treatment on malaria related maternal mortality on the north-western border of Thailand 1986-2010.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal mortality is high in developing countries, but there are few data in high-risk groups such as migrants and refugees in malaria-endemic areas. Trends in maternal mortality were followed over 25 years in antenatal clinics prospectively established in an area with low seasonal transmission on the north-western border of Thailand. METHODS AND FINDINGS: All medical records from women who attended the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit antenatal clinics from 12(th) May 1986 to 31(st) December 2010 were reviewed, and maternal death records were analyzed for causality. There were 71

Evaluation of Strongyloides stercoralis Ss-IR Recombinant Antigen Using a Bead-Based Immunoassay.

Infection with the soil-transmitted helminth Strongyloides stercoralis is typically asymptomatic but can result in life-threatening hyperinfection syndrome in immunocompromised individuals. To improve serological tests for strongyloidiasis, we evaluated the Ss-IR antigen using a multiplex bead assay and compared this assay to the commonly used Ss-NIE antigen. We assessed assay sensitivity and specificity using the following serum panels: sera from United States-bound refugees (57 positive stool polymerase chain reaction [PCR], 88 negative PCR) departing from Thailand-Burma border camps (panel

Death obsession in Palestinians.

The authors explored death obsession level and correlates among a sample (N = 601) of Palestinians living in the city of Beit Jala, the village of Al-Khader, and the Aida refugee camp in the Bethlehem area. They live in war conditions; the houses of half of them have been demolished. The Death Obsession Scale (DOS) was administered. Its alpha reliability was .92, denoting high internal consistency. Among women, it yielded 1 factor, (General Death Obsession), whereas among men it yielded 3 factors: Death Rumination, Death Dominance, and Death Idea Repetition. Palestinian men and women attained

Art, music, and sport: Catalysts of growth for youth in extreme contexts - A qualitative inquiry.

Limited research has focused on the experiences of adolescents in extracurricular programs and their potential to enhance their optimal development. Moreover, less studies examine the participation in such programs for those developing in extreme conditions (i.e., extreme poverty, sexual exploitation, refugee camps, conflicted areas, areas affected by climate changes). This study focused on the experience of youth living in the difficult context of Southern Madagascar, where youth face daily challenges such as malnutrition, arduous work, lack of freedom, limited access to healthcare, insecurit

Behind the splenomegaly: a parasitic twist in siblings with beta thalassemia trait.

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia syndromes are characterized by varying degrees of ineffective hematopoiesis and increased hemolysis. β-thalassemia trait typically presents as mild microcytic anemia and rarely with significant clinical findings such as splenomegaly. However, coexisting conditions in patients from endemic regions can obscure or complicate the clinical picture. Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa, is a well-recognized cause of splenomegaly and eosinophilia. CASE PRESENTATION: A pair of Congolese siblings with β-thalassemia trait presented with moderate sp

Fighting smallpox on the Texas border: an episode from PHS's proud past.

The motto of the Public Health Service (PHS) is "Service with Distinction." An example of how that motto was earned can be seen in the work of the professionals of the Marine Hospital Service (as PHS was then known) in a smallpox epidemic on the Texas border in 1895. Barely 2 years after Congress had given the U.S. Surgeon General the authority to intervene and prevent the spread of contagious diseases from one State to another, Surgeon General Walter Wyman, MD, stepped in. In response to a request from the Texas State Health Officer, Wyman sent a team of officers to assist the State and preve

Skin Disease After Refugee Resettlement: A Practical 90-Day Approach for Dermatologists and Primary Care Physicians.

The first months after refugee resettlement create an opportunity to identify transmissible, disabling, and undertreated skin disease. In the United States, the domestic medical examination generally occurs 30-90 days after arrival, but the clinical principles are relevant across resettlement systems. We conducted a structured narrative review of peer-reviewed publications and organizational or public-health sources. Evidence varied by migration stage, region, age, and referral pathway; camp and specialty-clinic data should not be treated as post-resettlement prevalence estimates. Physicians s

Vaccination campaign at a temporary camp for victims of the earthquake in Lorca (Spain).

Outbreaks in temporary camps are an important risk for the health of the displaced population. The town of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) suffered 2 earthquakes on May 2011 that required the re-housing of 1,424 victims in a temporary camp. Following 4 cases of chickenpox control measures were adopted among the displaced population. These measures included vaccination against chickenpox; due to the existence of cases of measles in adjacent regions, it was decided to offer measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination as well. The immunization campaign was performed during 2 d (3 to 4 d after the first ca

Arthropod borne disease: the leading cause of fever in pregnancy on the Thai-Burmese border.

BACKGROUND: Fever in pregnancy is dangerous for both mother and foetus. In the 1980's malaria was the leading cause of death in pregnant women in refugee camps on the Thai-Burmese border. Artemisinin combination therapy has significantly reduced the incidence of malaria in the population. The remaining causes of fever in pregnancy are not well documented. METHODOLOGY: Pregnant women attending antenatal care, where weekly screening for malaria is routine, were invited to have a comprehensive clinical and laboratory screen if they had fever. Women were admitted to hospital, treated and followed

Detection, molecular typing and phylogenetic analysis of Leishmania isolated from cases of leishmaniasis among Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Leishmania is a parasitic protozoan with more than two-dozen species causing the disease leishmaniasis. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female phlebotomine sand-fly vector. In the past two years the incidence of leishmaniasis has been drastically increasing in Lebanon. This was in parallel with the deterioration of the security in Syria forcing thousands to flee and seek shelter in poorly maintained refugee camps and collective shelters. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is now considered a public health problem, but its epidemiology has not been fully elucidated. To our
