Compromised bone quality predisposes domesticated birds to fractures in meat ducks, leading to pain and bad welfare. As a fermentable type II resistant starch, raw potato starch (RPS) probably supports gut health and potentially mitigate this inflammatory bone loss. Accordingly, the physicochemical properties of RPS were characterized, and its protective effect on bone quality in meat ducks were evaluated in the present study. The outcomes from electron microscope and X-ray diffraction showed that RPS possessed a round or oval granules with a smooth surface and a B-type crystalline structure.

Nicotiana alata is a high-value floricultural crop, but its widely cultivated commercial cultivar 'Jasmine' is highly susceptible to powdery mildew under low-light indoor conditions. This susceptibility results in leaf mold, yellowing, and wilting, along with a sharp decline in ornamental value. To address this issue and reduce fungicide reliance, we developed the first gene-editing system for N. alata featuring antibiotic marker-free visual identification. This system employs dual-visual markers for rapid positive screening using anthocyanin accumulation to indicate successful transformation

Black spot disease is an important disease infected by Alternaria brassicicola, which seriously affects the yield and quality of Brassica juncea. Arachidonic acid (ARA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid, induces the defense response of plants against pathogens. Here, we analyzed the induced resistance effect of ARA against black spot disease, and further revealed the underlying mechanism via physiological and transcriptome analyses. Treatment with 10 μM ARA exhibited the strongest resistance induction, dramatically improving the activities of defense enzymes (laccase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase,

Starch-binding domain-containing protein 1 (Stbd1) is a glycogen-binding protein which localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane and ER-mitochondria contact sites (ERMCs). The protein undergoes N-myristoylation, which is a major determinant of its subcellular targeting. Stbd1 has been implicated in the control of glucose homeostasis, as evidenced by the finding that mice with targeted inactivation of Stbd1 display insulin resistance associated with increased ERMCs in the liver. In the present study, we addressed the effects of increased Stbd1 expression levels on insulin signaling.

Valorization of agricultural residues addresses dual sustainability challenges: waste reduction and petroleum alternative development. This study demonstrates processing-controlled synthesis of acoustically functional bio-composites from durian peel fiber (DPF) combined with cassava starch binder. Composites were prepared at six DPF loadings (10-60 wt%) and evaluated for porosity, acoustic attenuation, physical, flexural, and thermal properties, moisture resistance, and biodegradability. Increasing fiber content produced a morphological transition from matrix-encapsulated (CDF10) to DPF-networ

Developing sustainable and multifunctional intelligent packaging systems has emerged as a highly promising approach to reducing plastic pollution, minimizing food waste, and enhancing food safety. In this research, a biodegradable intelligent active packaging with a dual pH-responsive system was created by incorporating fat-soluble curcumin (CUR) and water-soluble roselle anthocyanins (RSA) into core and shell, respectively, of starch-based fibers using emulsion electrospinning. Octenyl succinic anhydride starch/polyvinyl alcohol complexes functioned as both fiber wall materials and emulsifier

Peas are gaining attention as nutritious and sustainable grains for the snack industry. However, the high protein and dietary fiber contents of pea flour (PF) often limit its expansion during extrusion, resulting in dense products with suboptimal texture. This study investigated infrared (IR) heating as an effective thermal treatment to improve the performance of PF in extruded snack production. After tempering to 24%-25% moisture for 24 and 48 h, pea seeds were subjected to IR heating to reach a surface temperature of 125 °C-130 °C. After milling, the resulting flours were characterized for c

We report the potential of carbon nanodots (CNDs) as a molecular scaffold for enhancing the antimicrobial activities of small dendritic poly(amidoamines) (PAMAM). Carbon nanodots prepared from sago starch are readily functionalized with PAMAM by using N-ethyl-N'-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). Electron microscopy images of these polyaminated CNDs show that they are approximately 30-60nm in diameter. Infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses of the water-soluble material established the presence of the polyamidoaminated moiety and th

Valsa canker, caused by necrotrophic fungi in genus Valsa, is a devastating disease that threatens apple and pear production in China and other regions of East Asia. Receptor-like kinases (RLKs) play crucial roles in pathogen signal perception and the initiation of immune responses. However, key members of RLKs contribute to Valsa canker resistance and potential functions remain largely elusive. In this study, we identified a Malus domestica lysin-motif RLK gene, MdLYK7, whose overexpression substantially enhanced the Valsa canker resistance in apple and pear fruits and in suspension cells of

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common feature in obesity, comprising a cluster of abnormalities including abdominal fat accumulation, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, leading to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Intake of carbohydrates (CHO), particularly a sugary diet that rapidly increases blood glucose, triglycerides, and blood pressure levels is the predominant determining factor of MetS. Complex CHO, on the other hand, are a stable source of energy taking a longer time to digest. In particular, resistant starch (RS) or soluble fiber is an excellen

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most common neurodegenerative disorders with limited disease-modifying treatment options. Evidence suggests that the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) plays a role in these diseases by facilitating communication between the gut and the central nervous system. Associations have been found between altered gut microbiota composition and function, impaired barrier integrity, dysregulated metabolite production, and immune activation to neuroinflammation and progressive neurodegeneration.

India's diverse culinary heritage includes a wide spectrum of traditional fermented foods that harbour complex microbial communities essential for flavour development, preservation, and nutritional enhancement. These microorganisms-primarily lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and molds-contribute functional properties that extend beyond food transformation to confer health benefits, including probiotic potential and metabolic regulation. This review integrates classical microbiological studies with modern molecular approaches such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics to elucidate

This study established and optimized a high-density fermentation process for BJQ-CeRS3, a co-fermentation system of Pediococcus pentosaceus BJQ (P. pentosaceus BJQ) and type 3 resistant starch derived from canna (CeRS3), and evaluated its metabolic characteristics and lipid-lowering activity in vitro. Single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) based on a Box-Behnken design (BBD) identified the optimal conditions as 62 h of fermentation, a liquid-solid ratio of 10.6:1, and an inoculation size of 3.3%. Under these conditions, the viable count reached 11.00 ± 0.04 log10 CFU/

The functional consequences of consuming conventional and alternative protein rich food matrices remain poorly understood. This study characterized diverse protein rich food matrices and investigated their effect on gut microbiota, muscle protein synthesis, and host metabolic function in rats. Arthropods and lentils contained chitin, resistant starch, polyphenols, and antioxidant activity, whereas egg and picanha were enriched in cholesterol and precursors of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). Lentils and crickets consumption resulted in the lowest fat mass gain, glucose area under the curve and s

The addition of oat at varying percentages (26%, 32%, 38%, 44% and 50%) was used to evaluate the structural, microstructural, and physicochemical changes in instant-extruded rice (IER). A mixture of broken rice and oat flour was extruded in a twin-screw extruder. It was found that when adding 44% oats, the gelatinization degree of the mixed powder was the lowest (89.086 ± 1.966%). The dietary fiber content increased correspondingly with the increase in oat addition. Analyses of texture properties revealed that the hardness, adhesive, and resilience values increased and then decreased with oat

There is increasing evidence that microbial-based therapies can be useful in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). In this viewpoint, we provide a state-of-the-art review of the clinical and pre-clinical evidence for probiotics and prebiotics in PD. Currently, short-term clinical studies, including double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials, have demonstrated safety, and efficacy primarily in improving constipation-related symptoms. Pre-clinical studies consistently reported improvements in a range of biological markers and outcomes, including evidence for attenuation of gut dy

This review surveys rice nutritional value, mainly focusing on breeding achievements via adoption of both genetic engineering and non-transgenic strategies to improve key nutrients associated with human health. Rice (Oryza sativa) is an essential component of the diets and livelihoods of over 3.5 billion people. Polished rice is mostly consumed as staple food, fulfilling daily energy demands and part of the protein requirement. Brown rice is comparatively more nutritious, containing more lipids, minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds. In this article, we rev

Worldwide, both adults and children continue to develop metabolic diseases at an alarming rate. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to a cluster of risk factors associated with an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. The development of MetS is complex, and its mitigation requires multiple complementary strategies. One promising approach is dietary intervention with nutraceutical-rich foods that strengthen metabolic organs such as the liver and intestines against oxidative stress and inflammation. Potatoes are a widely consumed crop grown globally and are rich in macronutrients and bioactiv

The current trend of health-conscious consumers and healthy food habits prompts researchers to explore developing food products with synbiotic benefits. Synbiotic foods have gained popularity in recent years due to their functional, nutritional, physiological, and therapeutic characteristics. Lactose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and allergic milk proteins become the barriers in the development of dairy probiotics. The present scenario of an increase in the demand for vegetarian products leads to a rise in the consumption of non-dairy probiotics. Prebiotics like, resistant starch, inulin, and pol
