Cerebral near infrared spectroscopy is a reliable marker of systemic perfusion in awake single ventricle children.

Clinical assessment of systemic perfusion in single ventricle patients with parallel circulation can be difficult in the outpatient setting. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive measure of cerebral oximetry. We measured vital signs, pulse oximetry, and NIRS in 20 single ventricle patients with parallel circulation prior to routine cardiac catheterization. These variables were evaluated to determine the best noninvasive predictor of the superior vena cava saturation (SVC(sat)) as a marker for the adequacy of systemic oxygen delivery. The mean age was 6.7 months [standard deviation

Effects of surgical repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia on cerebral hemodynamics evaluated by near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory stabilization is recommended before surgical repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) because surgery may induce a transitory deterioration of chest compliance and gas exchange. It is not known if surgical intervention can affect cerebral circulation and oxygenation. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess noninvasively, by near-infrared spectroscopy, the possible changes in cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation associated with surgical repair of CDH. SUBJECTS: Twenty-five newborns with severe CDH (birth weight, 3057 +/- 354 g; gestational age, 37.8 +/- 1

Alteration of hemoglobin oxygenation in the frontal region in elderly depressed patients as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy.

In an attempt to elucidate the neurobiological basis of hypofrontality in depression, alterations of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin were examined by using near-infrared spectroscopy of the left frontal region in 9 elderly patients with depressive disorders and 10 control subjects. Verbal repetition task, verbal fluency test, hyperventilation, and paper-bag breathing were performed. During the verbal fluency test, oxyhemoglobin significantly increased and deoxyhemoglobin significantly decreased in control subjects, whereas no significant change was observed in patients. During hyperventilati

The use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in children after traumatic brain injury: a preliminary report.

Children commonly develop diffuse cerebral swelling after traumatic brain injury (TBI) which is believed due to a secondary response to the injury. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a continuous, direct, and noninvasive monitor of cerebral oxygenation and cerebral blood volume (CBV), could be helpful in understanding these secondary responses. The aims of our study were to determine whether NIRS used in children with severe TBI will provide insight into the pathophysiology of injury. Ten children (1 mo to 15 years old) with severe TBI (admission GCS < or = 7) were continuously monitored by NI

Clinical evaluation of near-infrared spectroscopy for testing cerebrovascular reactivity in patients with carotid artery disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) derives information about the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) from measurements of light attenuation caused by these chromosphores. The aim of this study was to assess NIRS as a tool for testing CO2 reactivity in patients with carotid artery disease. METHODS: One hundred patients with symptomatic carotid occlusive disease were examined (age range, 44 to 83 years). The severity of stenosis ranged from 30% to 100% (median, 80%) on the ipsilateral side and 0% to 100% (median, 30%) on the contralateral side.

The effect of acetazolamide and carbon dioxide on cerebral hemodynamic changes on near-infrared spectroscopy in young rabbits.

The changes of cerebral blood oxyhemoglobin (HbO2), deoxyhemoglobin (HbR), and total hemoglobin (tHb) induced by acetazolamide and CO2 loading on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) were recorded. In anesthetized 2-week-old rabbits, acetazolamide (10 mg/kg i.v.) increased HbO2 and tHb, concomitant with an increase in tissue PCO2, and decreased HbR only at 5 and 10 min. CO2 loading significantly increased HbR and decreased HbO2, and after the termination of CO2 loading, tHb and HbO2 significantly increased and HbR decreased to nearly the baseline value. Thus, NIRS demonstrated cerebral hemodynami

Pork adulteration detection in minced beef powders with varying fat content using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy.

Minced beef is widely used as a primary ingredient in various processed meat products and is vulnerable to adulteration with lower-priced meats such as pork. While near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been investigated for detecting such adulteration, the role of fat content as key feature for adulteration detection remains underexplored. To address this gap, this study investigated the potential of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to detect pork adulteration in minced beef across varying levels of fat content and adulteration, and identified the most informative NIR wavebands for detection. NIRSLINK: A Modular Cascaded Wearable Near-Infrared Spectroscopy System for High-Speed Multi-Site Hemodynamic Monitoring.

Wearable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring, yet conventional CW-NIRS systems suffer from limited temporal resolution, scalp-only measurement, and mandatory manual tuning to compensate for optical heterogeneity across subjects and sites. This work develops NIRSLINK, a modular cascaded wearable NIRS system for high-speed multi-site hemodynamic acquisition. Its flexible probes adopt spring-floating optics with a standardized 30 mm optode separation, integrating dual 735/850 nm LEDs, silicon photodiodes, and a two-stage closed-loop tuning algorithm. Suboptimal Neural Drive for Muscle Output During Exertional Hyperthermia: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) Study.

PURPOSE: Exertional hyperthermia impairs endurance performance. Although the central nervous system mediates premature fatigue, limited understanding of when and how neural perturbations arise during exertional hyperthermia hinders efforts to develop effective strategies to mitigate its impacts. METHODS: Fifteen physically active males completed a familiarization trial and three randomized crossover controlled trials involving treadmill walking at 54 ± 4% maximal oxygen consumption (mean ± SD) in a temperate environment (COOL; dry bulb temperature [Tdb]: 22.3 ± 0.4°C, relative humidity [RH]:

Functional dual-slope frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy data interpreted with two- and three-layer models.

SIGNIFICANCE: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is impacted by signal contamination from superficial hemodynamics. It is important to develop methods that account for such contamination and provide accurate measurements of cerebral hemodynamics. AIM: We aim to investigate whether simulated data with two- or three-layer tissue models are able to reproduce in vivo data collected with dual-slope (DS) frequency-domain (FD) near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) on human subjects during brain activation. APPROACH: We performed Monte Carlo simulations to generate DS FD-NIRS data from two- a

Continuous wavelet based transfer function analysis of cerebral autoregulation dynamics for neuromonitoring using near-infrared spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Near-infrared spectroscopy is now a popular method in neuromonitoring. Derived parameters like cerebral oxygenation index or Fast Fourier Transform based coherence estimates between blood pressure and cerebral blood flow have their limitations of use for stationary data and low time resolution. Wavelet transfer function analysis can be employed to estimate coherence, gain and phase relationship between two signals without these restrictions. METHODS: We aimed to extend the previously described Grinsted wavelet package with rectified bias of power and transfer function gain estim

Intraparenchymal near-infrared spectroscopy for detection of delayed cerebral ischemia in poor-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is challenging in comatose patients with poor-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Brain tissue oxygen pressure (PbtO2) monitoring may allow early detection of its occurrence. Recently, a probe for combined measurement of intracranial pressure (ICP) and intraparenchymal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has become available. In this pilot study, the parameters PbtO2, Hboxy, Hbdeoxy, Hbtotal and rSO2 were measured in parallel and evaluated for their potential to detect perfusion deficits or cerebral infarction. METHODS: In pat

Association between neural prosody discrimination and language abilities in toddlers: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Language delay affects near- and long-term social communication and learning in toddlers, and, an increasing number of experts pay attention to it. The development of prosody discrimination is one of the earliest stages of language development in which key skills for later stages are mastered. Therefore, analyzing the relationship between brain discrimination of speech prosody and language abilities may provide an objective basis for the diagnosis and intervention of language delay. METHODS: In this study, all cases(n = 241) were enrolled from a tertiary women's hospital, from 202

Evaluating Dual Task Neurological Costs with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Preliminary Report in Healthy Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Dual task assessments, which simultaneously challenge and assess cognitive and motor performance, have been used to improve the assessment of athletes with sports-related concussions (SRC). Our lab created a Dual Task Screen (DTS) to evaluate athletes with SRCs, and we have established that it is a valid behavioral measure, as it consistently elicits poorer behavioral performance under dual, compared to single, task conditions. Here, we used a Neuroimaging-Compatible (NC) version of the DTS, named the NC-DTS, which uses portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to asse
