The production of specialized metabolites by Streptomyces bacteria is usually temporally regulated. This regulation is complex and frequently involves both global and pathway-specific mechanisms. Streptomyces ambofaciens ATCC23877 produces several specialized metabolites, including spiramycins, stambomycins, kinamycins and congocidine. The production of the first three molecules has been shown to be controlled by one or several cluster-situated transcriptional regulators. However, nothing is known regarding the regulation of congocidine biosynthesis. Congocidine (netropsin) belongs to the fami

Toxoplasma gondii is a unicellular protozoan. The definitive hosts, cats, produce hardy oocysts and sporozoites. Ingestion by a nonfeline leads to the formation of tachyzoites acutely, which cause parasitemia and further dissemination, and bradyzoites, which lead to latent infection with the formation of tissue cysts in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, and central nervous system (CNS) tissue. Toxoplasmosis can be transmitted to humans by ingestion of tissue cysts in raw or inadequately cooked infected meat or in uncooked foods that have come in contact with contaminated meat, by inadvertent inge

There are several protozoan infections that cause relatively benign illness in normal individuals but result in severe disease manifestations in patients with AIDS. These diseases include Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, CNS toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, and isosporiasis. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) caused by Pneumocystis carinii, is the most common opportunistic infection in AIDS. It is seen in more than 80% of individuals with this syndrome. Although historically classified as a protozoan, this organism shares many biochemical characteristics with fungi. The onset of PCP may be i

Every 3 years, the International Congress on Congenital Toxoplasmosis meeting gathers experts with different backgrounds who are involved in congenital toxoplasmosis: gynecologists, pediatricians, ophthalmologists, microbiologists, epidemiologists and research scientists. Most attendees come from the Americas and Europe, where substantial work has been performed to better understand this disease. Two presentations that stressed major current issues in the field of toxoplasmosis are summarized here.

Monitoring antimicrobial use (AMU) is crucial, as it plays a key role in driving antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Animals account for a significant share of AMU, making it essential to accurately quantify AMU exposure at the species, farm, and country levels. In Pakistan, prophylactic use of antimicrobials remains common alongside therapeutic use. This study aimed to establish defined daily and course doses for both therapeutic and prophylactic use of antimicrobials in commercial broiler production in Pakistan. A list of antimicrobial products was compiled from the daily treatment records from

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistant bacteria are emerging biological contaminants of the environment. In aquatic ecosystems, they originate mainly from hospitals, livestock manure and private households sewage water, which could contain antimicrobial agents and resistant microorganisms. Aeromonas spp. occur ubiquitously in aquatic environments and they cause disease in fish. Motile aeromonads are also associated with human gastrointestinal and wound infections and fish can act as a transmission route of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) aeromonads to humans. The environmental ubiquity, the natura

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The frequent use of antibiotics in developed countries has led to the emergence of widespread bacterial resistance. In this study, the interindividual variability of the antibiotic susceptibility of 50 putative microorganisms in aggressive periodontitis patients has been evaluated by means of VC (variation coefficient).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 60 microbial samples were collected from 20 adult patients diagnosed with aggressive periodontitis (2-4 samples by patient). Bacterial strains of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacter

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia most commonly caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. While primarily affecting the lungs, extrapulmonary manifestations such as hyponatremia, renal dysfunction, and hepatic involvement are well described. In contrast, cutaneous manifestations are rare and remain poorly characterized. We report the case of a 62-year-old immunocompetent man with a history of chronic alcohol use and active smoking who presented with fever, dyspnea, and productive cough. On admission, he was febrile (38.5°C), tachycardic, and had crackles over the right lo

Congenital toxoplasmosis is caused by in utero infection of the fetus with the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Upon infection, the parasite forms life-long cysts in fetal brain and eyes which are resistant to the currently accepted therapy of pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine. These cysts commonly reactivate later in life causing chorioretinitis and visual impairment, and rarely cause neurological complications. I hypothesize that adjunctive, bradyzoite-directed therapies have the potential to alleviate a significant burden of disease by reducing cyst burden in neonatal brain and eyes.

A single blind randontised controlled parallel clinical trial of Rovamycin was conducted in which (Rovamycin Rhone-Poulenc Rorer) was compared with Augmentin in patients with acute otitis media. Forty patients were randomised to treatment with either Rovamycin or Augmentin and the drugs were evaluated for efficacy and safety. The efficacy parameters used were fever clearance, symptom clearance and cure rate after 8 days of treatment Our study showed that fever regressed in 19 (95%) of the 20 patients in both groups; otalgia in 19 (95) patients for the Augmentin and 18 (90%) for Rovamycin after

We worked with 185 middle-class patients above 18 years of age, both sexes, who presented diarrhea and/or chronic gastrointestinal disorders. The faeces were collected serially in formol 10% and processed in the following way: direct microscopy, with and without wet staining, concentration by Ritchie's method, 1% safranine technique for a specific investigation of Cryptosporidium sp., and faecal sieving macroparasites. Twenty eight point six of the studied patients showed at least one enteroparasite in their faeces, 48 harboured one parasite and 5 harboured two parasites. The following parasit

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical predictive value of the periodontal risk assessment diagram surface (PRAS) score and the influence of patient compliance on the treatment outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty subjects suffering from periodontitis were re-examined 6-12 years after the initial diagnosis and periodontal treatments. The baseline PRAS score was calculated from the initial clinical and radiograph records. Patients were then classified into a low-to-moderate (0-20) or a high-risk group (>20). Patients who did not attend any supportive periodo

BACKGROUND: Although, approximately 30% of the world's population is estimated to be infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) with serious manifestations in immunocompromised patients and pregnant females, the available treatment options for toxoplasmosis are limited with serious side effects. Therefore, it is of great importance to identify novel potent, well tolerated candidates for treatment of toxoplasmosis. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized using Zingiber officinale against acute toxoplasmosis in experimentally infected mic

The increased risk of hearing loss with macrolides remains controversial. We aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze data on the clinical risk of hearing loss, tinnitus, and ototoxicity following macrolide use. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Embase databases from database inception to May 2023. Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms and text keywords were utilized, without any language restrictions. In addition to the electronic databases, two authors manually and independently searched for relevant studies in the US and European clinical trial re

Ninety-one Swiss veal farms producing under a label with improved welfare standards were visited between August and December 2014 to investigate risk factors related to antimicrobial drug use and mortality. All herds consisted of own and purchased calves, with a median of 77.4% of purchased calves. The calves' mean age was 29±15days at purchasing and the fattening period lasted at average 120±28 days. The mean carcass weight was 125±12kg. A mean of 58±33 calves were fattened per farm and year, and purchased calves were bought from a mean of 20±17 farms of origin. Antimicrobial drug treatment i

The renewed interest in macrolide antibacterials with expanded indications for clinical use, as well as their markedly increased usage, justifies the continuous search for new compounds designed to offer the patient not only enhanced bioavailability but also a reduced incidence of adverse effects. Macrolides are an old and well established class of antimicrobial agents that account for 10 to 15% of the worldwide oral antibiotic market. Macrolides are considered to be one of the safest anti-infective groups in clinical use, with severe adverse reactions being rare. Newer products with improved

In this work we presented our own experience with recognized and treated toxoplasmosis among children. Treated cases were observed over several years afterwards. We analyzed the frequency and character of clinical changes, evaluated the validity of serological screening and the effectiveness of treatment. The largest age group treated were children 13 months to 5 years old. 13 children had the congenital and 12 the acquired form. The most cases occurred in the nodal, ocular and ocular-cranial forms. Thus, the most common symptoms were enlarged lymphatic nodes, strabismus, febrile seizures, int

In Greece there are no official recommendations concerning the management of pregnant women for the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis. A protocol for monitoring pregnant women was designed in order to differentiate between acute and latent toxoplasmosis and was tested successfully for 7 years. The maternofetal transmission rate in Crete was assessed and a map showing seroprevalence of pregnant women in all prefectures of Greece was prepared. The high seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Greece (up to 46% in some areas) may be explained by: (a) the presence of a great number of stray cat

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most frequent sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen in developed countries [3, 12, 13]. The position is similar in the Czech Republic. Depending on the group of examined women active Chlamydia infection varies between 10 and 23%. The increasing incidence of urogenital Chlamydia infections and improving diagnostic possibilities call for adequate treatment. Correct treatment of urogenital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is very important for the prevention of undesirable sequelae of inflammations of the lesser pelvis, subsequent risk of GEU, sterility, p
