A novel approach using protein-rich biomass as co-fermentation substrates to enhance phosphorus recovery from FePs-bearing sludge.

A novel approach for the enhancement of phosphorus (P) recovery from Fe bound P compounds (FePs)-bearing sludge by co-fermentation with protein-rich biomass (PRB) is reported. Four PRBs (silkworm chrysalis meal, fish meal, corn gluten meal, and soya bean meal) were used for co-fermentation. The results revealed that PRBs with strong surface hydrophobicity and loose structure favored the hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes. Sulfide produced by PRB could react with FePs to form FeS and promote P release. Due to the neutralization of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) by a relatively high concentratio

Copper Speciation Evolution in Swine Manure Induced by Pyrolysis.

Swine manures generally contain high levels of copper (Cu) resulting from its use as a growth promoter in feedstuff. Pyrolysis can further concentrate Cu whereas decrease its available fraction in swine manures. Here we investigated the speciation transformation of Cu and associated elements in swine manures induced by pyrolysis using multiple X-ray absorption spectroscopies. Results showed that over 82% of Cu existed as Cu(I)-S and Cu(I)-thiolate complexes in swine manures, which were transformed into stable Cu(I)2S during pyrolysis at a low temperature of 300 °C and partially oxidized and de

Treatment of anaerobic digester effluents of nylon wastewater through chemical precipitation and a sequencing batch reactor process.

Chemical precipitation, in combination with a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process, was employed to remove pollutants from anaerobic digester effluents of nylon wastewater. The effects of the chemicals along with various Mg:N:P ratios on the chemical precipitation (struvite precipitation) were investigated. When brucite and H(3)PO(4) were applied at an Mg:N:P molar ratio of 3:1:1, an ammonia-removal rate of 81% was achieved, which was slightly more than that (80%) obtained with MgSO(4)·7H(2)O and Na(2)HPO(4)·12H(2)O at Mg:N:P molar ratios greater than the stoichiometric ratio. Urolithiasis in childhood: current management.

During the past 12 years, 62 children with urinary stones have been treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The most common presenting symptoms were abdominal or flank pain (45%), recurrent or persistent pyuria (35%), and gross hematuria (21%). Twenty-two patients had associated congenital urologic anomalies. Infection-related struvite stones were most common and were found in 18 children, of whom 15 were found to have anatomic abnormalities. Eighteen of 28 children evaluated for a metabolic cause were found to have an abnormality, most frequently hypercalciuria. No predisposing fa

Persistent pseudomembranous cystitis associated with Vagococcus lutrae in a setter dog: First clinical report.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common diseases in companion animals, but empirical antibiotic treatments without culture often lead to recurrence and resistance. Vagococcus species are rarely reported as pathogens in animals, and Vagococcus lutrae has not previously been described in dogs. We report the first case of V. lutrae-associated cystitis in a dog in Türkiye. An 8-year-old female English Setter developed persistent dysuria and hematuria after surgery for pelvic trauma. Despite multiple antibiotic treatments (enrofloxacin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin-clav

Bioresorbable, amorphous magnesium-fiber reinforced bone cement with enhanced mechanical and biological properties.

In this study, we developed and characterized a fully biodegradable composite bone cement reinforced with short, randomly oriented amorphous magnesium fibers. Fibers of composition Mg60Zn35Ca5 (in at.%) with 50 μm diameter and 2 mm length were produced by wire spinning and then mixed with a magnesium calcium phosphate cement using fiber volume fractions between 10 and 20 %. The interface strength between the fibers and cement was improved by treating the fibers with diammonium hydrogen phosphate. Compared to the reference cement without fibers, flexural strength was increased by 18 % for the c

Nutrient release, recovery and removal from waste sludge of a biological nutrient removal system.

The uncontrolled release of nutrients from waste sludge results in nitrogen and phosphorus overloading in wastewater treatment plants when supernatant is returned to the inlet. A controlled release, recovery and removal of nutrient from the waste sludge of a Biological Nutrient Removal system (BNR) are investigated. Results showed that the supernatant was of high mineral salt, high electrical conductivity and poor biodegradability, in addition to high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations after the waste sludge was hydrolysed through sodium dodecyl sulphate addition. Subsequently, over 91.8%

Simultaneous removal of phosphorus and potassium from synthetic urine through the precipitation of magnesium potassium phosphate hexahydrate.

This study investigated the simultaneous removal of P and K from synthetic urine through the precipitation of magnesium potassium phosphate hexahydrate (MPP, MgKPO(4)·6H(2)O) in bench-scale experiments. Results show that the removal efficiencies of P and K are mainly determined by the solution pH and the molar ratio of Mg:K:P. Co-precipitation of struvite-type compounds, i.e., magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (MAP, MgNH(4)PO(4)·6H(2)O), magnesium sodium phosphate heptahydrate (MSP, MgNaPO(4)·7H(2)O), and MPP, was confirmed by analysis of the solid precipitates using a Scanning Electron

Inorganic Scaling Mechanisms During Forward Osmosis Concentration of Fresh vs. Hydrolysed Urine: Theoretical Modelling and Experimental Validation.

Forward osmosis (FO) offers a promising route for urine concentration and nutrient recovery, yet inorganic scaling under high water recovery remains a significant challenge. This study systematically investigated scaling during FO treatment of synthetic fresh urine (SFU) and synthetic hydrolysed urine (SHU) over three consecutive cycles to 80% water recovery. SFU exhibited moderate flux decline (~14.4 → 4-5 LMH), with minimal hydraulic resistance from sparse calcium-deficient Ca-P deposits (Ca:P ≈ 1.2; ACP/OCP-like). In contrast, SHU caused severe cumulative scaling, progressively reducing flu

Water hardness-mediated EBPR-BIPP synergistic phosphorus removal and microbial community response.

Water hardness, often overlooked in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), plays a decisive role in biologically induced phosphate precipitation (BIPP). While hardness effects on chemical phosphorus removal are documented, hardness-mediated BIPP impacts on EBPR performance remain poorly understood. This study operated four sequencing batch reactors at 0, 150, 300, and 600 mg L-1 hardness (as CaCO3). Results demonstrated that hardness simultaneously promoted biological uptake and chemical precipitation, maintaining stable high performance (88% TP removal, SVI 89 mL g-1) even at 600 mg L

Ureaplasma urealyticum upper urinary tract infection: persistence and pathogenicity in a canine model.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is an opportunistic pathogen, commonly isolated from the lower urogenital tract. Although U. urealyticum has been cultured from the upper urinary tracts of patients with interstitial renal diseases and struvite renal calculi, the precise role of ureaplasmas in upper tract diseases is unknown. To evaluate their potential significance in the etiology of renal diseases, we studied survival, multiplication, and pathogenicity of U. urealyticum in canine kidneys with experimentally induced hydronephrosis. After inoculation of the prototypic serovar (Type 8, strain 960) of U. u

Investigation and treatment of renal calculi.

We have investigated and treated 176 patients who were suffering from renal calculi. The stones contained calcium in 87% of patients, predominantly urate in 11%, and rarely contained magnesium ammonium phosphate or cystine. Of the patients with calcium stones, hypercalciuria was present in 75% and was identified in 57% by the measurement of the 24-hour urinary calcium excretion, and in a further 18% by a standardization calcium "fast-and-load" test. Nine patients were found to have primary hyperparathyroidism and were treated surgically. A further 21% were suspected to have normocalcaemic hype
