Adaptive adversarial neural networks for the analysis of lossy and domain-shifted datasets of medical images.

In machine learning for image-based medical diagnostics, supervised convolutional neural networks are typically trained with large and expertly annotated datasets obtained using high-resolution imaging systems. Moreover, the network's performance can degrade substantially when applied to a dataset with a different distribution. Here, we show that adversarial learning can be used to develop high-performing networks trained on unannotated medical images of varying image quality. Specifically, we used low-quality images acquired using inexpensive portable optical systems to train networks for the

Nanoelectronic Detection of Opioids: Machine Learning-Powered Screening With Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistor Sensor Array.

The development of inexpensive, portable, and rapid opioid screening techniques is urgently needed because of the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States, primarily driven by illicit fentanyl. In this work, a nanoelectronic detection method was developed for opioids using machine learning. Fentanyl and three other opioids (codeine, hydrocodone, and morphine) were tested with field-effect transistor (FET) sensor array composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) decorated with gold and platinum nanoparticles. Hundreds of opioid samples were tested manually and with an automated electr

Validating machine learning approaches for prediction of donor related complication in microsurgical breast reconstruction: a retrospective cohort study.

Autologous reconstruction using abdominal flaps remains the most popular method for breast reconstruction worldwide. We aimed to evaluate a prediction model using machine-learning methods and to determine which factors increase abdominal flap donor site complications with logistic regression. We evaluated the predictive ability of different machine learning packages, reviewing a cohort of breast reconstruction patients who underwent abdominal flaps. We analyzed 13 treatment variables for effects on the abdominal donor site complication rates. To overcome data imbalances, random over sampling e

Machine learning-driven national analysis for predicting adverse outcomes in intramedullary spinal cord tumor surgery.

UNLABELLED: Spinal tumors represent 15% of all central nervous system malignancies, with intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCTs) being rare. Predominantly ependymomas and astrocytomas, IMSCTs often present late, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Surgical excision is key but challenging due to the tumors' complex, invasive nature. Treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach, considering tumor type and patient condition, ranging from subtotal to gross total resection, possibly with adjuvant therapy. This study uses machine learning on National Cancer Database data to predict

Pilot Study Using Machine Learning to Identify Immune Profiles for the Prediction of Early Virological Relapse After Stopping Nucleos(t)ide Analogues in HBeAg-Negative CHB.

Treatment with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) may be stopped after 1-3 years of hepatitis B virus DNA suppression in hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative patients according to Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver and European Association for the Study of Liver guidelines. However, virological relapse (VR) occurs in most patients. We aimed to analyze soluble immune markers (SIMs) and use machine learning to identify SIM combinations as predictor for early VR after NA discontinuation. A validation cohort was used to verify the predictive power of the SIM combination. In a post hoc a

A Semi-supervised Algorithm for Atrial Fibrillation Attack Prediction Using Convolution Auto-encoder of Time Series Signal.

During the initial stages, atrial fibrillation (AF) typically presents as paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), which may further progress into persistent atrial fibrillation, leading to high-risk diseases such as ischemic stroke and heart failure. Given that the current machine learning algorithms used for predicting AF involve time-consuming and labor-intensive processes of feature extraction and labeling electrocardiogram data, this study proposes a novel two-stage semi-supervised AF attack prediction algorithm. The first stage is designed as unsupervised learning based on convolutional aut

Identifying and predicting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis clinical subgroups: a population-based machine-learning study.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is known to represent a collection of overlapping syndromes. Various classification systems based on empirical observations have been proposed, but it is unclear to what extent they reflect ALS population substructures. We aimed to use machine-learning techniques to identify the number and nature of ALS subtypes to obtain a better understanding of this heterogeneity, enhance our understanding of the disease, and improve clinical care. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we applied unsupervised Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection [UMA

Application and Comparison of Supervised Learning Strategies to Classify Polarity of Epithelial Cell Spheroids in 3D Culture.

Three-dimensional culture systems that allow generation of monolayered epithelial cell spheroids are widely used to study epithelial function in vitro. Epithelial spheroid formation is applied to address cellular consequences of (mono)-genetic disorders, that is, ciliopathies, in toxicity testing, or to develop treatment options aimed to restore proper epithelial cell characteristics and function. With the potential of a high-throughput method, the main obstacle to efficient application of the spheroid formation assay so far is the laborious, time-consuming, and bias-prone analysis of spheroid
