The cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2 (CRABP2) is believed to be involved in regulating access of retinoic acid to nuclear retinoic acid receptors. We have determined the cDNA sequence and the genomic organization of the duplicated crabp2 gene (crabp2b) in zebrafish. The crabp2b cDNA was 522bp in length and encodes a polypeptide consisting of 146 amino acids. Radiation hybrid mapping assigned the crabp2b gene to zebrafish linkage group 19. The comparison of the mapped human CRABP2 gene, zebrafish crabp2a and zebrafish crabp2b genes revealed that human chromosome 1 has a syntenic relatio

INTRODUCTION: Plants of the genus Woodwardia have a long history of medicinal use in China. Among these plants, Woodwardia japonica, Woodwardia unigemmata, and Woodwardia prolifera are the primary source species of Guan Zhong, a traditional Chinese medicine. However, because of morphological similarity among their dried herbal materials and limited availability of organellar (mitochondrial and chloroplast) genomic data, research on species identification, molecular evolution, and phylogeny has been impeded.
METHODS: Organelle genomes of the three Woodwardia species were sequenced and assemble

Citrus, a widely cultivated Rutaceae crop, comprises numerous varieties, among which Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) is the most widely cultivated in Japan. In this study, a high-quality, chromosome-scale, haplotype-phased genome assembly of Satsuma mandarin ("Miyagawa wase") was generated using PacBio HiFi sequencing, Omni-C scaffolding, and a trio binning strategy incorporating its parental genomes (Kishu mandarin (C. kinokuni) and Kunenbo mandarin (C. nobilis)). This approach enabled the complete separation of parental haplotypes. To obtain accurate gene models, we performed long-rea

The Nitrate Transporter 1/Peptide Transporter family (NPF) plays a vital role in transporting a wide range of diverse mobile substrates, including nitrate, peptides, amino acids, dicarboxylates, malate, glucosinolates, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), and jasmonic acid (JA). While systematic characterization of NPF family genes has been achieved in model plants like Arabidopsis and rice, as well as in horticultural crops such as tomato and apple, their orthologs in Pyrus bretschneideri have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we identified 85 PbNPF genes in genome

BACKGROUND: Cryptochromes (CRYs) are blue light and ultraviolet A (UV-A) photoreceptors that play pivotal roles in regulating plant development and stress responses through mediating light signaling pathways. However, the evolutionary and functional characteristics of the cryptochrome/photolyase (CRY/PHL) family in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: 57 CRY/PHL genes were identified across eight species, including 14 members in hexaploid wheat. Phylogenetic analysis classified CRY/PHLs into four subfamilies. All TaCRY/PHL proteins contain the conserved photolyase h

Soil salinity disrupts redox homeostasis and limits plant growth and development. Although catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are key enzymatic antioxidants, the CAT and SOD gene families have not been characterized in Artemisia argyi (A. argyi), a species of medicinal and ecological importance. While SOD and CAT serve as the primary enzymatic scavengers for reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification, their genomic architecture and stress-responsive regulatory networks in A. argyi have remained uncharacterized. In this study, we conducted the first comprehensive genome-wide analys

Inositol monophosphatase (IMP) is a key enzyme in the inositol signaling pathway and ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis, playing crucial roles in plant growth, development, and abiotic stress responses. Sorghum (S. bicolor) is an important cereal crop with remarkable drought and salinity tolerance, yet a systematic analysis of the IMP gene family in sorghum has been lacking. In this study, we identified eight IMP genes (SbIMP-1-SbIMP-8) in the sorghum genome. Phylogenetic analysis classified them into six subfamilies, consistent with rice and maize, suggesting a common ancestral origin. Gene str

Transitions between saprotrophic and biotrophic lifestyles represent pivotal evolutionary events in fungal ecology; however, the genomic and physiological mechanisms underlying such shifts remain poorly understood. The agaric genus Clitopilus (Basidiomycota, Entolomataceae) offers a valuable model system, with most species being soil saprotrophs. Clitopilus cf. baronii Consiglio & Setti exhibits genomic signatures suggesting incipient biotrophic capacity. Here, we investigated the genomic and eco-physiological properties of seven strains representing five Clitopilus species to identify traits

Low iron levels in marine habitats necessitate the production of structurally diverse siderophores by many marine bacterial species for iron acquisition. Siderophores exhibit bioactivities ranging from chelation for iron reduction in hemochromatosis sufferers to antimicrobial activity either in their own right or when coupled to known antibiotics for targeted delivery or for molecular imaging. Thus, marine environments are a sought-after resource for novel siderophores that could have pharmaceutical or industrial application. The fimsbactins A-F (1-6) are mixed catechol-hydroxamate siderophore

The ability of Leptospirae to persist in environments and animal hosts but to cause clinically highly variable disease in humans has made leptospirosis the most common zoonotic disease. Considering the paucity of data on variation in complete genomes of human pathogenic Leptospirae, we have used a combination of Single Molecule Real-Time (SMRT) and Illumina sequencing to obtain complete genome sequences of six human clinical L. interrogans isolates from Malaysia. All six contained the larger (4.28-4.56 Mb) and smaller (0.34-0.395 Mb) chromosome typical of human pathogenic Leptospirae and 0-7 p

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with several gastro-duodenal inflammatory diseases of various levels of severity. To determine whether certain combinations of genetic markers can be used to predict the clinical source of the infection, we analyzed well documented and geographically homogenous clinical isolates using a comparative genomics approach.
RESULTS: A set of 254 H. pylori genes was used to perform array-based comparative genomic hybridization among 120 French H. pylori strains associated with chronic gastritis (n = 33), duodenal ulcers (n = 27), intestinal meta

UNLABELLED: The accumulation of genomic structural variation between closely related populations over time can lead to reproductive isolation and speciation. The fungal pathogen Cryptococcus is thought to have recently diversified, forming a species complex containing members with distinct morphologies, distributions, and pathologies of infection. We have investigated structural changes in genomic architecture such as inversions and translocations that distinguish the most pathogenic variety, Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii, from the less clinically prevalent Cryptococcus neoformans var. n

Interleukin-19 like (IL-19L) is a member of the interleukin-10 family and plays a crucial role in inflammation, immune regulation, and other biological processes. Although the characteristics and functions of IL-10 family members in mammals have been elucidated, those of IL-19L in fish remain poorly understood. In this study, we cloned the IL-19L gene from the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), designated as LcIL-19L. The open reading frame (ORF) of LcIL-19L comprises 684 base pairs, encoding 227 amino acids, and lacks a signal peptide. It possesses a typical IL-10 domain and six cons

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GIT) helminthiasis is a global problem that affects livestock health, especially in small ruminants. One of the major helminth parasites of sheep and goats, Teladorsagia circumcincta, infects the abomasum and causes production losses, reductions in weight gain, diarrhoea and, in some cases, death in young animals. Control strategies have relied heavily on the use of anthelmintic medication but, unfortunately, T. circumcincta has developed resistance, as have many helminths. Vaccination offers a sustainable and practical solution, but there is no commercially avail
