Deep Learning-Based Detection of Impacted Teeth on Panoramic Radiographs.

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to detect impacted teeth in panoramic radiology by refining the pretrained MedSAM model. STUDY DESIGN: Impacted teeth are dental issues that can cause complications and are diagnosed via radiographs. We modified SAM model for individual tooth segmentation using 1016 X-ray images. The dataset was split into training, validation, and testing sets, with a ratio of 16:3:1. We enhanced the SAM model to automatically detect impacted teeth by focusing on the tooth's center for more accurate results. RESULTS: With 200 epochs, batch size equals to 1, and a learning rate of 0.001

Autotransplantation of an ectopic impacted premolar with sinus lift and allogenic bone graft.

AIM: This article presents a case report of autogenous tooth transplantation to a site which had insufficient bone volume using a sinus lift and allogenic bone graft. SUMMARY: An ectopic, fully impacted premolar tooth was autotransplanted from its ectopic impaction site into its original site, where there was insufficient recipient vertical bone volume because of sinus expansion. The deciduous tooth was extracted from the recipient site, and the sinus membrane detached and elevated via the alveolar socket. Allogenic bone grafting was performed, and the impacted premolar was transplanted into

An Insight Into the Effect of Odontogenic Keratocysts on Surrounding Structures: Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Based Analysis of Cases.

Introduction  An odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a benign intraosseous lesion with potential to demonstrate aggressive and invasive behavior. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the imaging features of the OKC using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to evaluate the association between the internal structure of the lesion and the effect of the lesion on surrounding structures. Methods Overall, 32 CBCT scans of histopathologically diagnosed cases of OKC were analyzed retrospectively. The following variables were analyzed: anatomic location of the lesions (mandible body (rig

Gene expression profiles in dental follicles from patients with impacted canines.

Animal studies suggest that the dental follicle (DF) plays a major role in tooth eruption. However, the role of the DF during tooth impaction and related root resorptions in adjacent teeth is not clear. The hypothesis for the present study is that expression of regulatory factors involved in the bone remodelling process necessary for tooth eruption may differ between dental follicles from teeth with different clinical situations. We have analysed the gene expression profiles in the DF obtained from impacted canines, with (N = 3) or without (N = 5) signs of root resorption, and from control tee

Removal of Infected Maxillary Third Molar from the Infra-temporal Fossa by Caldwell Luc Procedure - Rare Case Report with Literature Review.

Dentigerous or follicular cysts of odontogenic origin are innocuous benign cysts that are often linked with the crowns of permanent teeth. A dentigerous cyst circumventing permanent teeth fails to erupt and is often displaced into ectopic positions in the upper and lower jaw in the maxillofacial region. In the maxilla or upper jaw region, the impacted teeth are often displaced and/or shift into the maxillary sinus and apart from the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process and the palate, to harbour such ectopic eruptions of teeth. We report a rare case of an impacted left third mola

Multiple osseous dysplasia arising from impacted teeth: report of a case associated with odontogenic lesions.

We report a case of osseous dysplasia (OD) showing extremely rare clinical features. A 37-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our clinic complaining of a left alveolar bony swelling at an impacted canine. Radiographic examinations revealed a mixed radiopaque lesion involving the impacted left canine and also revealed an impacted left wisdom tooth with a cystic change and a clear radiopaque lesion suspected to be odontoma. All the extracted upper teeth and odontoma showed hypercementosis and the canine was fully involved in it. Histopathologically, they showed the same features and were dia

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma masquerading as odontoma.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign epithelial mixed odontogenic tumor. It occurs as an intraosseous lesion, generally asymptomatic and more prevalent in children and adolescent. AFO is found on radiographic evaluation of patients with unerupted or impacted teeth in many cases. Histological examination reveals a fibrous soft tissue, islands of odontogenic epithelium and a disordered mixture of dental tissues. The treatment modality in most cases involves conservative surgery with enucleation. We present a case of 13-year-old boy with a missing right central incisor, mimicking-l

Periodontal concerns associated with the orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth.

Impacted teeth are common and are often treated with orthodontic eruption, but periodontal problems associated with the process can evade detection. Profound destruction of the periodontium of an impacted tooth or adjacent teeth can occur. This case report describes the orthodontic eruption of 4 impacted canines in a 19-year-old woman. An open surgical approach was used. Within 6 months of treatment, the maxillary right canine and the lateral incisor experienced severe periodontal destruction, resulting in questionable prognoses for the teeth. Plaque control, periodontal architecture, and subg

Facial Cellulitis of Unusual Odontogenic Origin.

A healthy man in his 40s was referred to the Oral Surgery and Implantology Unit of Geneva University Hospital for diagnosis and management of facial swelling affecting the right side of his lower jaw. The patient's history revealed that the patient had been hit by several punches to the face a few months earlier. To investigate the swelling, an intra-oral radiograph, an orthopantomographic radiograph, and computed tomography were performed, which revealed no fracture of the lower jaw but the presence of a partly impacted fractured wisdom tooth (third molar). This finding, together with the cli

[Orthodontics in general practice. 2. Treatment of eruption failures].

Since the introduction of composites and bonding in orthodontics, the possibilities of aligning impacted teeth into the dental arch after a surgical intervention, have remarkably increased. There are 4 important treatment techniques. The closed-eruption technique includes bracket-bonding to and ligating of the exposed tooth, followed by repositioning of the mucosal flap. The disadvantage of the method is the uncontrollable orthodontic force on the non-visible tooth during orthodontic extrusion. The open-eruption technique aims at keeping the exposed tooth visible, followed by spontaneous erupt

Removal of Horizontally Impacted Mandibular Third Molar through Buccal Plate Extirpation and Replacement - An Evaluative Study.

BACKGROUND: An impacted lower wisdom tooth is a common condition encountered in oral surgery. A horizontally impacted lower third molar is associated with more bone removal compared to mesioangular and distoangular impactions. OBJECTIVE: The goal was to minimize overall bone removal without compromising the function of the inferior alveolar nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients, between 18 and 46 years old, participated in the study-20 females and five males. All patients attended a private clinic with the intention of having their impacted teeth removed. A portion of the buccal

An adolescent patient with multiple impacted teeth.

Multiple impacted permanent teeth is uncommon and rarely reported in the literature. This article reports the treatment of an adolescent patient with multiple impacted teeth without systemic disease. A 9-year 2-month-old boy complained of a delay of eruption of the first molars. All first molars were unerupted, and the left deciduous second molar was a submerged tooth. The panoramic radiograph showed all permanent teeth except the incisors were unerupted and, especially for the first molars, spontaneous eruption was not expected. His medical history was uneventful.
