Sensitivity to relative disparity in early visual cortex of pigmented and albino ferrets.

To investigate binocular interactions as the neuronal substrate for disparity sensitivity in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo), we measured the effects of relative horizontal disparities on responses of neurons in areas 17 and 18 of the visual cortex. Stimulation by moving bars and sinusoidal gratings showed that about half of our sample in pigmented ferrets was sensitive to relative horizontal disparity. This also included many neurons, which were classified as only monocularly activated when testing either eye alone. However, the tuning width was about two or three times coarser (median tun

Population imaging of ongoing neuronal activity in the visual cortex of awake rats.

It is unclear how the complex spatiotemporal organization of ongoing cortical neuronal activity recorded in anesthetized animals relates to the awake animal. We therefore used two-photon population calcium imaging in awake and subsequently anesthetized rats to follow action potential firing in populations of neurons across brain states, and examined how single neurons contributed to population activity. Firing rates and spike bursting in awake rats were higher, and pair-wise correlations were lower, compared with anesthetized rats. Anesthesia modulated population-wide synchronization and the r

Preservation of functional architecture in visual cortex of cats with experimentally induced hydrocephalus.

We investigated how neural function is preserved or matured in the visual cortex of cats, following the induction of hydrocephalus by kaolin injection. In vivo optical imaging of intrinsic signals in 11-17-week-old hydrocephalic cats revealed orientation maps showing the orderly arrangement of preferred orientations when stimulated by grating stimuli at a low spatial frequency, whereas stimulus-evoked intrinsic signals in response to gratings at a high spatial frequency were often too weak to construct orientation maps. Furthermore, in two of the three hydrocephalic cats, initially deteriorate

Mechanisms of Sensitivity Loss due to Visual Cortex Lesions in Humans and Macaques.

This study represents the first use of noise masking and signal detection theory to examine mechanisms of visual loss after lesions of visual cortex. Noise-masked contrast thresholds were increased in 2 macaques and 2 humans at lesion-affected, compared with control, regions of their visual fields. Experiments suggested by the organization of visual cortex examined possible mechanisms of the visual loss. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that damage to feedback connections might eliminate the benefit of comparing test stimuli with remembered representations but neither could account for th

Oscillatory neuronal synchronization in primary visual cortex as a correlate of stimulus selection.

Spike and local field potential activity were recorded simultaneously from multiple sites in primary visual cortex of strabismic cats, while monocular stimulation alternated with dichoptic stimulation, inducing interocular rivalry. During interocular rivalry, there is competition between the two nonfusible stimuli presented to the two eyes, and only one stimulus is selected at any time. We biased this competition in three different ways: (1) we exploited the condition that in strabismic cats there is often one dominant eye that is selected for most of the time. (2) We presented the two stimuli

[A model of the structure of the dipole source of the alpha rhythm in the human visual cortex].

The model of the alpha-rhythm was studied which consisted of a set of elementary dipoles. The dipoles were fixed normally to the surfaces of a cruciform structure which imitated the structure of the visual cortex. The magnitude of dipole moments varied according to the sinusoidal low. Thus, the effect was produced of the waves leaving the epicenters which in one case were located in the lower parts of the cruciform structure and at the ends of the side rays of this structure in the other case. The model enabled imitation of all experimentally found phenomena of the alpha-wave travelling (front

[Expansion and thickness of the visual cortex of microphthalmic mice and healthy Wistar animals].

In connection with our studies about the development and the structure of the visual system of the brain of normal and genetically microphthalmic mice in this paper we have investigated the extend of the visual cortex and the thickness of the primary visual cortex (area Oc1). The most important results are: The size of the surface of the neocortex and of the areas Oc1 and Oc2m shows no significant differences between the normal and the microphthalmic mice. The whole thickness of area Oc1 is at day 20 in the microphthalmic mice significantly greater than in normal animals. In the microphthalmic

Enhanced sensory convergence to the visual cortex in the rodless (rd/rd) mouse.

The rd/rd mutation provokes a specific degeneration of the photoreceptive cells in the mouse retina, without affecting other neuronal elements. This degeneration starts 8 to 10 days after birth. Discriminative learning experiments have shown the degenerated retina to remain light-sensitive, the sensitivity being reduced to 10(-5) of normal with a peak still at 500 nm. An ontogenetic study showed a progressive vanishing of visual potentials (electroretinogram and visual evoked potentials) during the third week of life. Potentials of auditory origin, which can be recorded from the visual cortex

[Inhibition with light flashes of negative delta-waves in the rabbit visual cortex].

To elucidate the nature of negative and positive phases of background delta-waves (BDW), their interaction with evoked potentials was studied in the rabbit visual cortex. BDW appeared after injection of drugs synchronizing ECoG: amyzyl, aminozin, barbiturates, and during asphyxia. The flashes evoked slow positive responses lasting about 0.5 to 1.0 s. These responses blocked the negative BDW. The results of the study and published data suggest that background delta-activity consists of segments which reflect the desynchronized state and correspond to positive BDW, and of segments which reflect

Evidence for long-term functional plasticity in the visual cortex of adult cats.

1. Vision was investigated with behavioural and electrophysiological techniques in three groups of cats: (a) two normally raised kittens in which one eye was rotated at an age of 3 months, (b) three adult cats in which one eye had been rotated and the other closed 6 months prior to recording, (c) two adult cats in which first one eye had been rotated and the other closed and subsequently, after one year, the rotated eye had been closed and the normal eye re-opened. The latter two cats were investigated 6 and 12 months after reverse suture, respectively. All adult cats were at least 2 years old

Connections of the visual cortex in the hedgehog (Paraechinus hypomelas). II. Corticocortical projections.

Cortical subdivisions based on cytoarchitectural and myeloarchitectural observations of normal tissue were correlated with the topography of corticocortical connections in the visual system of the Pakistani hedgehog. Large subpial aspiration lesions were made in both visual and non-visual cortical regions to determine the areal limits of the corticocortical connections of the visual cortex. Subsequently, discrete electrolytic lesions were placed within the visual cortex. After appropriate survival periods, the brains were processed and stained with the Fink-Heimer technique. The results of the

Graded sparing of visually-guided orienting following primary visual cortex ablations within the first postnatal month.

We compared the abilities of intact cats and cats that incurred lesions of areas 17 and 18 in adulthood, at one month of age (P28), or on the day of birth (P1), to detect and orient towards visual stimuli either moved into or illuminated in the periphery of the visual field, and to detect and orient towards a stationary, broad-band white-noise auditory stimulus. For all groups of cats, movement of a stimulus into the visual field was a more potent stimulus for evoking visually-guided orienting movements than illumination of a static light-emitting diode (LED). The potency of the auditory stimu

The prefrontal cortex shows context-specific changes in effective connectivity to motor or visual cortex during the selection of action or colour.

The role of the prefrontal cortex remains controversial. Neuroimaging studies support modality-specific and process-specific functions related to working memory and attention. Its role may also be defined by changes in its influence over other brain regions including sensory and motor cortex. We used functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) to study the free selection of actions and colours. Control conditions used externally specified actions and colours. The prefrontal cortex was activated during free selection, regardless of modality, in contrast to modality-specific activations outside prefronta

Visual mental imagery engages the left fusiform gyrus, but not the early visual cortex: A meta-analysis of neuroimaging evidence.

The dominant neural model of visual mental imagery (VMI) stipulates that memories from the medial temporal lobe acquire sensory features in early visual areas. However, neurological patients with damage restricted to the occipital cortex typically show perfectly vivid VMI, while more anterior damages extending into the temporal lobe, especially in the left hemisphere, often cause VMI impairments. Here we present two major results reconciling neuroimaging findings in neurotypical subjects with the performance of brain-damaged patients: (1) A large-scale meta-analysis of 46 fMRI studies, of whic

C1q and SRPX2 regulate microglia mediated synapse elimination during early development in the visual thalamus but not the visual cortex.

The classical complement cascade mediates synapse elimination in the visual thalamus during early brain development. However, whether the primary visual cortex also undergoes complement-mediated synapse elimination during early visual system development remains unknown. Here, we examined microglia-mediated synapse elimination in the visual thalamus and the primary visual cortex of early postnatal C1q and SRPX2 knockout mice. In the lateral geniculate nucleus, deletion of C1q caused a persistent decrease in synapse elimination and microglial synapse engulfment, while deletion of SRPX2 caused a

Modulation of primary motor cortex outputs from ventral premotor cortex during visually guided grasp in the macaque monkey.

Area F5, in the ventral premotor cortex of the macaque monkey, plays a critical role in determining the hand shape appropriate for grasp of a visible object. F5 neurones show increased firing for particular types of grasp, and inactivation of F5 produces deficits in visually guided grasp. But how is F5 activity transformed into the appropriate pattern of hand muscle activity for efficient grasp? Here we investigate the pathways that may be involved by testing the effect of single stimuli delivered through microwires chronically implanted in area F5 and in primary motor cortex (M1) of two macaq

Gamma frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation over the visual cortex modulates contour integration.

INTRODUCTION: The visual system must integrate spatially fragmented information to perceive coherent object boundaries. Contour integration represents a fundamental process underlying this perceptual organization by linking discrete edge elements into continuous contour. Gamma oscillations have been associated with perceptual grouping processes, from contour integration to object perception; however, their causal contribution to contour integration remains unclear. METHODS: Participants performed a contour detection task in which they identified the orientation of a target contour composed of

When vision listens: auditory predictive processing in primary visual cortex of anesthetized rats.

Primary visual cortex (V1), traditionally considered a purely visual area, is increasingly recognized for its role in multisensory processing. According to predictive coding theory, cortical circuits generate expectations about sensory inputs (predictions) and signal deviations from them (prediction errors). To test whether V1 encodes auditory prediction errors, we recorded neuronal activity and LFP from layers IV-VI in urethane-anesthetized rats during auditory oddball and no-repetition control sequences. Recorded neurons from layers V-VI in our sample responded to tones, with many showing st
