Hydrogeochemical evaluation and entropy-driven water quality assessment of Lakshmipur District's groundwater, Southeastern Bangladesh.

Coastal communities in Bangladesh heavily depend on groundwater as a primary source of drinking water. However, these sources are under increasing threat due to natural and human-induced factors (geogenic and anthropogenic effects), including excessive salinity, contamination through heavy metals, runoff from agricultural fields, and municipal sewage. To assess seasonal variations in hydrogeochemistry, water quality, pollution status, and potential health threats, we collected 46 groundwater samples from Lakshmipur District. Of these, 23 samples were collected during the pre-monsoon (March-Apr

Real-time public health interventions driven by wastewater and environmental surveillance during Uganda's 2025 martyrs day mass gathering.

BACKGROUND: Mass gatherings increase the risk of infectious disease transmission, particularly when healthcare systems are overstretched and underfunded. Wastewater and environmental surveillance (WES) offer a real-time, non-invasive method for monitoring pathogen circulation at the population level. During Uganda's 2025 Martyrs' Day pilgrimage, which drew over three million people, the Ministry of Health used WES to identify and respond to health threats. METHODS: During the four days (May 31-June 3, 2025), 44 environmental samples were collected from 11 strategically selected sites, includi

Outcome of reactive arthritis after an extensive Finnish waterborne gastroenteritis outbreak: a 1-year prospective follow-up study.

The purpose of the study was to assess the 1-year outcome of definitive reactive arthritis (ReA) after a waterborne outbreak. A cohort of 21 patients (15 females and 6 males, median age 54 years) with ReA related to an extensive waterborne outbreak in Finland was clinically followed-up by rheumatologists with visits at baseline, at 1 month and 3, 6 and 12 months. Although the outcome was in general favourable, 1/3 of the patients had chronic course; 7 (33 %) of the 21 patients needed disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and even 8 (38 %) of them used glucocorticoids at 12 months. Microbial community analysis during continuous fermentation of thermally hydrolysed waste activated sludge.

Acidogenic fermentation of thermally hydrolysed waste activated sludge was carried out at laboratory scale in two reactors operated under different hydraulic retention times (HRT). Process performance was assessed in terms of volatile fatty acid (VFA) composition and yield. The diversity of the microbial population was investigated by constructing a 16S rRNA gene library and subsequent phylogenetic analysis of clones. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to assess the relative abundance of different bacterial groups. Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the dominant taxonomic groups

Zoonotic protozoa--food for thought.

Outbreaks of water- and foodborne diseases caused by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Toxoplasma are well documented. Three features of these zoonotic protozoa ensure a high level of environmental contamination and enhance the likelihood of waterborne transmission. Firstly, they are responsible for disease in a broad range of hosts including man, have a low infectious dose enhancing the possibility of zoonotic transmission, secondly, their transmissive stages are small in size and environmentally robust and thirdly are insensitive to the disinfectants commonly used in the water industry. In additi

Selective primary health care: strategies for control of disease in the developing world. XV. Acute diarrhea.

Diarrhea claims the lives of at least five million children per year and is a major contributor to malnutrition in developing countries. A variety of infectious agents cause diarrhea through several pathogenic mechanisms. Bacteria such as Shigella can directly invade the intestinal mucosa, and those similar to Vibrio cholerae or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli can produce toxins that alter cellular absorption and secretions. Rotavirus appears to cause 30%-40% of diarrhea in toddlers. Diarrhea frequently accompanies parasitic infestation and infections in other parts of the body. Several metho

Effects of pulp mill effluents and restricted diet on growth and physiology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Juvenile female rainbow trout was exposed for 4.5 months (June to October) to two dilutions of untreated and activated sludge treated whole mill effluent from a pulp mill producing bleached ECF pulp. Two controls were used, on fed ad libitum and a second receiving 0.5% feed of the body weight. All effluent exposed groups were fed ad libitum. Mean weight of the fish was measured monthly. At the end of the experiment a number of physiological and biochemical parameters were analyzed in order to establish the physiological status of the exposed fish in comparison with unexposed fish that obtained

Food and Water Safety Risks From Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli Contamination in Bukavu City, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Introduction Bukavu city is facing sanitation challenges, with many reported cases of epidemics such as cholera, salmonellosis, and other infectious diseases. Food and water sold under poor sanitation conditions are exposed to potential contamination by pathogenic bacteria. Consumers are therefore at risk of contracting bacterial infections, which could increase the burden of infectious diseases. Solid waste and wastewater management is unsatisfactory in Bukavu city. Few scientific investigations have been conducted to assess the influence of environmental conditions on food and water contamin

Critical evaluation of human health risks due to hydraulic fracturing in natural gas and petroleum production.

The use of hydraulic fracturing (HF) to extract oil and natural gas has increased, along with intensive discussions on the associated risks to human health. Three technical processes should be differentiated when evaluating human health risks, namely (1) drilling of the borehole, (2) hydraulic stimulation, and (3) gas or oil production. During the drilling phase, emissions such as NOx, NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) as precursors for tropospheric ozone formation, and SOx have been shown to be higher compared to the subsequent phases. In relation to hydraulic stimulation, the t

[Animals as a source of infections for humans--diseases caused by EHEC].

EHEC (enterohaemorrhagic E. coli) bacteria are new, only since 1982 recognized zoonotic pathogens. EHEC differ from E. coli intestinal commensales by the fact that they are lysogenic infected with bacteriophages, which carry the genetic information for the production of shigatoxins (Stx type 1 and/or 2). Due to the obligatory released Stx EHEC are classified also among the Shigatoxin producing E. coli (STEC). EHEC are capable of causing a Hemorrhagic Colitis and some sequelae of diseases such as the haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Due to their virulence factors they can be divided into typical an

Genomic characterization and comparative analysis of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli ST361 from urban wetland.

BACKGROUND: Wetlands are severely affected by human activities like untreated sewage, overuse of antibiotics and agricultural runoff, leading to the accumulation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Migratory birds visiting these contaminated wetlands further spread the ARB and ARGs globally. Urban lakes, with high anthropogenic impact, are increasingly showing MDR E. coli, which are responsible for global infections and AMR gene dissemination. ST361 is an emerging global threat, showing an upward trend in prevalence and resistance to major antibiotic

[Simultaneous determination of 22 antibiotics in environmental water samples by solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

The widespread and frequent use of antibiotics to treat diseases or encourage animal growth has resulted in their persistence and accumulation in water, soil, and sediments. As a typical emerging pollutant in the environment, antibiotics have become an important research focus in recent years. Antibiotics are commonly found at trace levels in water environments. Unfortunately, the determination of various types of antibiotics, all of which exhibit different physicochemical properties, remains a challenging endeavor. Thus, developing pretreatment and analytical techniques to achieve the rapid,

Bacterial growth state distinguished by single-cell protein profiling: does chlorination kill coliforms in municipal effluent?

Municipal effluent is the largest reservoir of human enteric bacteria. Its public health significance, however, depends upon the physiological status of the wastewater bacterial community. A novel immunofluorescence assay was developed and used to examine the bacterial growth state during wastewater disinfection. Quantitative levels of three highly conserved cytosolic proteins (DnaK, Dps, and Fis) were determined by using enterobacterium-specific antibody fluorochrome-coupled probes. Enterobacterial Fis homologs were abundant in growing cells and nearly undetectable in stationary-phase cells.

Sources, pathways, and relative risks of contaminants in surface water and groundwater: a perspective prepared for the Walkerton inquiry.

On a global scale, pathogenic contamination of drinking water poses the most significant health risk to humans, and there have been countless numbers of disease outbreaks and poisonings throughout history resulting from exposure to untreated or poorly treated drinking water. However, significant risks to human health may also result from exposure to nonpathogenic, toxic contaminants that are often globally ubiquitous in waters from which drinking water is derived. With this latter point in mind, the objective of this commission paper is to discuss the primary sources of toxic contaminants in s

Airborne route and bad use of ventilation systems as non-negligible factors in SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

The world is facing a pandemic of unseen proportions caused by a corona virus named SARS-CoV-2 with unprecedent worldwide measures being taken to tackle its contagion. Person-to-person transmission is accepted but WHO only considers aerosol transmission when procedures or support treatments that produce aerosol are performed. Transmission mechanisms are not fully understood and there is evidence for an airborne route to be considered, as the virus remains viable in aerosols for at least 3 h and that mask usage was the best intervention to prevent infection. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditi

Acinetobacter bereziniae sp. nov. and Acinetobacter guillouiae sp. nov., to accommodate Acinetobacter genomic species 10 and 11, respectively.

Acinetobacter genospecies (genomic species) 10 and 11 were described by Bouvet and Grimont in 1986 on the basis of DNA-DNA reassociation studies and comprehensive phenotypic analysis. In the present study, the names Acinetobacter bereziniae sp. nov. and Acinetobacter guillouiae sp. nov., respectively, are proposed for these genomic species based on the congruence of results of polyphasic analysis of 33 strains (16 and 17 strains of genomic species 10 and 11, respectively). All strains were investigated by selective restriction fragment amplification (i.e. AFLP) analysis rpoB sequence analysis,

Prevalence of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases CTX-M-8 and CTX-M-2-Producing Salmonella Serotypes from Clinical and Nonhuman Isolates in Brazil.

We characterized extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) enzymes among Salmonella strains isolated in Brazil from 2009 to 2014. Salmonella recovered from both clinical and nonhuman (food, poultry, and environment) sources were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing. β-lactamases genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction/sequencing; plasmid profiles and transferability were assessed by S1-pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Genetic diversity was evaluated by XbaI-PFGE. Out of 630 Salmonella strains screened, 46 displayed ESBL phenotype, distributed across 11 different serot
