[Acupuncture and other forms of treatment for patients with chronic back pain].

As in all pain sites, one has to distinguish between acute and chronic pain in spinal pain syndromes. The treatment of chronic spinal pain is dominated by non-operative procedures. There are three main procedures in this field of treatment: the manual medicine, the therapeutic application of local anesthetics and acupuncture. By manual techniques the pain-producing spinal structures can be recognized and these techniques offer at the same time sufficient treatment options to the patients. Therefore, manual therapeutic strategies are applied at first in a treatment session followed by the thera

Clinical updates in cancer-related fatigue in palliative care settings-a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common symptom affecting patients with the majority of cancers with a significant impact on the overall quality of life. CRF has a complex and multifactorial origin, making it difficult to pinpoint specific causes, as they are interlinked with each other. The given scoping review aims to identify and explore the recent clinical updates related to screening, diagnosis, and management. METHODS: Databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Medline were used for our search, and the articles from January 2020 to March 2025 were screened. Studies t

Nonpharmacological interventions and outcomes in the management of complications of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1-related myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymph tropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I)-related myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) is a progressive inflammatory process affecting the spinal cord that occurs as a result of HTLV 1. The use of nonpharmacological approaches has always been one of the treatment strategies in these patients, but disagreement about these interventions and their results has led to their limited use. Therefore, this study aimed to identify nonpharmacological interventions and their consequences in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We followed the Cochrane Handbook for systematic

A musculoskeletal model of low grade connective tissue inflammation in patients with thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO): the WOMED concept of lateral tension and its general implications in disease.

BACKGROUND: Low level connective tissue inflammation has been proposed to play a role in thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). The aim of this study was to investigate this postulate by a musculoskeletal approach together with biochemical parameters. METHODS: 13 patients with TAO and 16 controls were examined. Erythrocyte levels of Zn, Cu, Ca2+, Mg, and Fe were determined. The musculoskeletal evaluation included observational data on body posture with emphasis on the orbit-head region. The angular foot position in the frontal plane was quantified following gait observation. The axial orien

Single-blind, randomized, pilot study combining shiatsu and amitriptyline in refractory primary headaches.

Complementary alternative medicine, such as shiatsu, can represent a suitable treatment for primary headaches. However, evidence-based data about the effect of combining shiatsu and pharmacological treatments are still not available. Therefore, we tested the efficacy and safety of combining shiatsu and amitriptyline to treat refractory primary headaches in a single-blind, randomized, pilot study. Subjects with a diagnosis of primary headache and who experienced lack of response to ≥2 different prophylactic drugs were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive shiatsu plus amitriptyline, shiatsu al

Reasons for encounter and recommended interventions in an interprofessional integrative oncology counseling program in outpatient care: a mixed-methods analysis of 1,693 consultation letters.

INTRODUCTION: Complementary and integrative healthcare (CIH) approaches play an increasingly important role in oncology care, involving a wide range of healthcare professionals and therapeutic methods. While patient demand for CIH and the evidence base for individual interventions have grown considerably, the implementation of structured counseling services for the effective and safe use of CIH remains limited. To address this gap, a controlled, multicenter implementation study was conducted at four Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCC) in Germany to establish an outpatient, interprofessional, ev

Pain Phenotyping Indicators in Older Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: A multimodal approach to clinical care is often recommended for chronic low back pain (cLBP); however, treatment responses are highly variable. Phenotyping could help determine subgroups of patients, allowing for targeted and tailored interventional approaches. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 263 (Mage=69.8 (7.2); 64.6% female) individuals with cLBP participated in the parent study, a 3-arm, randomized clinical trial examining auricular point acupressure treatment outcomes. Parent study participants were randomized (1:1:1) to APA ear points targeted to cLBP (T-APA, n=92), non-targeted to cLBP

Acupoint for angina pectoris: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with angina pectoris (AP) often experience heavy psychological distress, especially anxiety and depression, which results in poorer quality of life, shorter survival time. Acupoint therapies, including massage, acupuncture, acupoints injection, acupressure, and moxibustion, showed clinical and long-lasting benefits for AP, but the efficiency of acupoint therapies was poorly evaluated. The current review is attempted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the different acupoint-based therapies for AP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A literature search will be conducted in MEDLINE
