Evaluation of motion perception and binocular vision following dichoptic treatment for amblyopia.

Although poor monocular visual acuity is the main characteristic of amblyopia, binocular vision is also often disrupted in amblyopia. Motion perception deficits have also been reported to be impaired in both amblyopic and fellow eyes. Occlusion therapy, the gold-standard treatment for amblyopia, is usually unsuccessful at fully restoring binocular visual function or motion perception. We evaluated the effectiveness of a video game-based dichoptic treatment (Vivid Vision) for restoring these aspects of vision in amblyopia. Twenty-one participants (age 6 to 56 years) with strabismic, anisometrop

Postoperative amblyopia in children with congenital cataracts: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of amblyopia following congenital cataract surgery in children and evaluate key prognostic factors, including age at intervention, cataract phenotype, and follow-up duration. We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for studies published between January 1, 1981, and March 1, 2023. We included clinical trials, case series, and observational studies to analyze surgical timing, visual outcomes, and complications. Among 28 studies (2,167 patients, 3,371 eyes), the pooled amblyopia prevalence was 62

Emerging therapies for improving stereoacuity in amblyopia. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Emerging treatments, including virtual reality (VR)-based therapies, video games, and movies, have been proposed to enhance stereoacuity in individuals with binocular vision disorders such as amblyopia and strabismus. However, their comparative effectiveness remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of these emerging treatments in improving stereoacuity through within-group analyses, and to compare their outcomes with occlusion, in studies with direct group comparisons. We conducted comprehensive literature searches in PubMed, MEDLINE, Coch

Factors affecting the total occlusion time in eyes with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia treatment by occluding the healthy eye is known to be effective during a sensitive critical period. This study aims to clarify the factors for the total occlusion time (TOT) required for the amblyopic eye to achieve a normal visual acuity (VA) level of 1.0 (0.0 logMAR equivalent). This could contribute to an efficient treatment plan for eyes with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia. METHODS: Subjects were 58 patients (26 boys and 32 girls; age range, 3.6-9.2, average, 5.8 ± 1.3 years) with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia. All the subjects had initially visited and comple

Clinical analysis of eye movement-based data in the medical diagnosis of amblyopia.

Amblyopia is an abnormal visual processing-induced developmental disorder of the central nervous system that affects static and dynamic vision, as well as binocular visual function. Currently, changes in static vision in one eye are the gold standard for amblyopia diagnosis. However, there have been few comprehensive analyses of changes in dynamic vision, especially eye movement, among children with amblyopia. Here, we proposed an optimization scheme involving a video eye tracker combined with an "artificial eye" for comprehensive examination of eye movement in children with amblyopia; we soug

Factors associated with visual acuity improvement with a binocular digital therapeutic for amblyopia.

We combined data from 121 amblyopic children enrolled in two prospective open-label pilot studies and a randomized trial of a binocular digital therapeutic to identify factors associated with positive response to amblyopia treatment. Visual acuity improved ≥1 line in 81% of participants after 12 weeks of therapy. Treatment response was not found to be associated with age, severity of amblyopia, or prior treatment status. Although these findings may suggest broad efficacy for this treatment approach, further investigation in larger cohorts is needed to identify factors associated with treatment

Exogenous attention generalizes location transfer of perceptual learning in adults with amblyopia.

Visual perceptual learning (VPL) is a behavioral manifestation of brain neuroplasticity. However, its practical effectiveness is limited because improvements are often specific to the trained conditions and require significant time and effort. It is critical to understand the conditions that promote learning and transfer. Covert endogenous (voluntary) and exogenous (involuntary) spatial attention help overcome VPL location specificity in neurotypical adults, but whether they also do so for people with atypical visual development is unknown. This study investigates the role of exogenous attenti
