Zoonotic Dermatoses of Exotic Companion Mammals.

Integumentary disorders caused by zoonotic agents are very common in exotic companion mammals. This article provides an understanding of the main zoonotic dermatoses including parasitic, fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases to provide the most updated information on their epidemiology, diagnosis, reported clinical signs, and therapies.

Chelonian Sedation and Anesthesia.

Anesthetic management of chelonians represents a unique challenge; the order Chelonia includes numerous species that display diverse anatomic features, habitats, body sizes, temperaments, and metabolic rates. Owing to their peculiar characteristics, safe and effective sedation and anesthesia may be more complicated than in other animals. For example, gas inductions are not indicated, and intravenous catheterization requires practice. The pharmacology of anesthetic drugs is severely impacted by body/environmental temperature, site of administration, and organ function. This review will summariz

Fish Sedation and Anesthesia.

Veterinarians often need to sedate or anesthetize fish to perform physical examinations or other diagnostic procedures. Sedation may also be required to transport fish. Painful procedures require complete anesthesia with appropriate antinociceptive agents. Regulations and withdrawal times apply to food animal species in many countries. Specific protocols are therefore warranted in commercial fish versus ornamentals. Tonic immobility of elasmobranchs and electric anesthesia should never be used to perform painful procedures. Anesthetic monitoring in fish remains challenging. This review summari

Respiratory Disorders in Ferrets.

Ferrets are susceptible to many disorders affecting the respiratory tract including both primary diseases and diseases of other body systems secondarily affecting the respiratory tract. Some primary respiratory diseases are shared with other mammal species including humans; potentially zoonotic diseases include important pathogens such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Other diseases include infections (bacterial, parasitic, and fungal) and neoplasia. A thorough workup is important to identify exact causes in order to formulate a treatment plan. Infectious diseases include bacterial, fungal, parasi

Respiratory Diseases of Snakes.

Respiratory abnormalities in snakes are a common clinical presentation in zoologic medical practice. There are often compounding issues involving translocation and substandard husbandry that can predispose to infectious and noninfectious causes of respiratory disease. Endoscopic evaluation of the respiratory tract and the collection of biopsies for histopathology and microbiology is preferred but may only be available from the specialist. Alternatively, transtracheal lavage for cytology and microbiology is a practical method for most practitioners. A variety of bacterial, fungal, viral, and pa

Managing Disease Outbreaks in Captive Flocks of Birds.

The modern avian practitioner may be called upon to manage disease outbreak in aviary or zoologic bird flocks. Traditionally, managing these types of disease events has been based on avicultural production principles, which may require modification to adapt to the modern leisure, educational, or exhibition aviary. We discuss how principles of avicultural medicine and disease investigation may be adapted to the aviary flock and illustrate these modified principles with real-world examples.

Gerontology of Psittacines.

With recent improvements in the husbandry, nutrition, and veterinary care of captive psittacines, the avian clinician must be familiar with common medical condition seen in geriatric parrots. A review of the theory of evolution and avian senescence is provided. Five clinically relevant medical conditions are described: organ failure, atherosclerosis, neoplasia, cataracts, and osteoarthritis.

Geriatric Ferrets.

Ferrets are considered geriatric at 3 years of age. Twice-yearly physical examinations with additional testing finds problems and leads to prompt treatments that extend quality of life for the ferret. Bloodwork, urinalysis, dental examination, and imaging including radiographs and ultrasonography should be performed at least annually. Specialized testing includes echocardiography, electrocardiology, blood pressure, computed tomography scanning, and dental radiography depending on the ferret. Common problems include dental disease, cardiomyopathy, renal disease, musculoskeletal disorders, chron

Clinical Management of Avian Renal Disease.

Treatment of avian renal disease relies on supportive care, such as fluid therapy and nutritional support. Analgesia and adaptations of the environment are indicated in cases of renal disease associated with painful joints. Other treatments vary with the underlying etiology and may include systemic antibiotics, antifungal therapy, vitamin A supplementation, or chelation therapy.

Update on Diseases in Chinchillas: 2013-2019.

Chinchillas have been used mostly as fur animals and as animal models for human ontological diseases and only recently have been recognized as excellent, long-lived, and robust pet rodents. This review aims to provide updated information on emerging disease conditions in pet chinchillas, such as Streptococcus equi subsp zooepidemicus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, this review article provides updated information on previously documented disorders, such as urolithiasis and middle ear disease, in chinchillas. This article is intended to serve as a complement to the current veterinary r

Clinical Management of Reptile Renal Disease.

Renal disease is one of the most common medical conditions encountered in captive reptiles. In most cases, signs of disease are nonspecific and often not present until the condition is advanced. Many factors contribute to the development of renal disease, and the etiology often is multifactorial. Diagnosis of renal disease by traditional methods used in small animals is not as straightforward as in reptiles; often many tests may be needed to reach a firm diagnosis. Prevention is preferred to treatment. Understanding the pathophysiology, potential causes, diagnostic tests available, and treatme

Emerging Zoonotic Diseases in Ferrets.

As veterinarians, we may be the first to diagnose emerging zoonotic diseases in ferrets and may be at increased risk of exposure. Pseudomonas luteola is a bacterial infection that causes respiratory disease, panniculitis, sialadenitis, and abscess formation. Hepatitis E virus can cause subclinical infection, acute hepatitis, and persistent infection. Since the 2013 article discussing the 2009 influenza pandemic affecting ferrets, there has been an additional case of suspected anthroponotic infection in a pet ferret and experimental infection with influenza viruses from humans, cats, and dogs.

African pygmy hedgehogs are popular pets worldwide. The knowledge and understanding of pet hedgehog common veterinary conditions are increasing as new information and research are published; however, there is still much to learn about this fascinating animal. Ocular Surface Biology and Disease in Amphibians.

Vision is essential for amphibians, so a healthy ocular surface is critically important. There are ocular surface abnormalities that occur predominantly in captive animals, such as corneal lipidosis, whereas others, such as UV-induced trauma or infectious and parasitic conditions, may be critical to survival for animals in the wild. It is believed that inherited defects are going to be seen in small captive populations but it may be that confined wild groups of amphibians can be just as severely affected. Anything that blinds an animal severely affects its life changes.

Ocular Surface Disease in Rodents (Guinea Pigs, Mice, Rats, Chinchillas).

This article discusses the clinical appearance, differential diagnoses, and treatment considerations of corneal disease in the most common domesticated species of rodent: mouse, rat, chinchilla, and guinea pig. Many corneal diseases are related to inbred strains of either research or pet rodents. Diseases are complicated by husbandry and treatment-related challenges in this small, social species. This article is broken down by species, first discussing normal anatomy, then discussing commonly encountered diseases, and concluding with treatment considerations.

Avian Vaccination: Current Options and Strategies.

Researchers have generated an array of potential avian antiviral vaccines. However, vaccine and viral complexity, small profit margins, the cost of development and manufacturing, and the small population at risk relegate most avian vaccine use to commercial species. Some vaccines designed for use in nonavian species are used to prevent or ameliorate disease in exotic and companion birds. This article highlights newly developed vaccines that may be used in exotic and pet birds. Information pertinent to vaccine choice and strategy is provided, including disease lethality, species affected, and p
