The body asks and the mind judges: the episode of food craving, its triggers and nutritional treatment.

Food desires are defined as motivations that drive the search for and consumption of food. However, when domains of intensity and urgency are activated, these desires can become intense (i.e. food craving), being then characterized by episodes or cognitive events loaded with affectivity, in which food is associated with obtaining pleasure or relief, which is the only attentional focus. Specificity and urgency mark the differentiation between food desires and cravings. The process of elaboration with vivid images, the retention in working memory, the emergence of a negative affect state (awaren

Current treatment approaches to overweight in adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence of overweight among adolescents aged 12 to 19 in the United States has steadily increased since the 1960s. The purpose of this review is to familiarize primary care clinicians with the most recent primary care, pharmacotherapy, and surgical options for the treatment of overweight in adolescence. RECENT FINDINGS: Initial treatment of the overweight adolescent should involve a comprehensive approach that facilitates changes in diet, exercise, and behavior that engage the entire family as participants and role models. For adolescents in whom a comprehensive prog

Extent of hypophagia caused by propionate infusion is related to plasma glucose concentration in lactating dairy cows.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate how dose-response effects of intraruminal infusion of propionate on feeding behavior and plasma metabolites are altered by diets differing in fermentability. Twelve ruminally cannulated Holstein cows were used in each experiment. Cows were fed diets containing either steam flaked corn or dry cracked corn (30% of dietary dry matter) in expt. 1, and diets differing in forage-to-concentrate ratio (66:34 vs. 36:64) in expt. 2. For both experiments, the experimental design was a crossover for dietary treatment, and a 6 x 6 Latin square for infusion treatme

A comparative study of the anorectic and behavioral effects of fenproporex on male and female rats.

The anorectic and behavioral effects of fenproporex (Fenp, 10 mg/kg, ip) and methamphetamine (Met, 2.5 mg/kg, ip), a prototypical example of an amphetamine-like drug, were studied in male and female Wistar rats (5 and 3 months of age, respectively, at the beginning of the experiments) after acute (immediately after a single dose) or chronic treatment (after 60 days of administration). For the evaluation of the experimental parameters six groups of eight rats each were utilized for food intake and stereotyped behavior and six groups of nine rats each for body weight and motor activity. Treating obesity in children and adolescents: a review.

Researchers and health practitioners are becoming increasingly concerned with the problems associated with obesity among children and adolescents. Obesity tends to persist into adulthood and to be associated with a variety of physical and psychological problems. Treatment approaches used to date are generally impotent, but some promising short-term results have been achieved with some forms of dietary counseling, exercise programs, total environmental management, and behavior therapy. But even with these strategies, clinically significant weight loss is rare and advances during treatment are r

Searching beneath the shelf in macaque monkeys: evidence for a gravity bias or a foraging bias?

The reasons underpinning search biases in 2 species of macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca arctoides) were explored over the course of 3 experiments requiring monkeys to search for a hidden food reward. The results reveal that monkeys are adept at exploiting perceptual cues to locate a food reward but are unable to use physical constraints such as solidity as cues to the reward's location. Monkeys prefer to search for a food reward beneath a solid shelf, not because they have an expectation that the reward should be there, but rather because, in the absence of usable cues, this bias eme

An operant determination of the behavioral mechanism of benzodiazepine enhancement of food intake.

RATIONALE: A recent review paper by Cooper (Appetite 44:133-150, 2005) has pointed out that a role for benzodiazepines as appetite stimulants has been largely overlooked. Cooper's review cited several studies that suggested the putative mechanism of enhancement of food intake after benzodiazepine administration might involve increasing the perceived pleasantness of food (palatability). OBJECTIVES: The present study examined the behavioral mechanism of increased food intake after benzodiazepine administration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cyclic-ratio operant schedule has been proposed as a use

The "Yoking" of glutamatergic brain mechanisms involved in controlling brain neuronal excitability and psychosis to brain mechanisms involved in appetite regulation: a new hypothesis on the origin of psychosis.

The authors speculate that the human primate evolved psychosis generating brain mechanisms in the service of certain feeding behaviors (i.e., appetite, foraging) during the course of evolution. Furthermore, these "psychosis generating brain mechanisms" may have grown directly out of brain mechanisms servicing appetite, of which neuropeptide Y (NPY) played an important role. A case is made for an NPY contribution to the pathophysiology of psychosis. We hypothesize that the psychomimetic effects of NPY extend to supporting certain "psychomotor" functions that might have been useful for obtaining

A Pragmatic Outpatient Framework for Appetite-Related Phenotyping in Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Previous obesity phenotyping models have been proposed; however, current protocols rely on complex physiological assessments that are difficult to implement in routine outpatient care. AIM: To describe and apply a pragmatic outpatient framework for appetite-related phenotyping integrating standardized satiety testing and emotional eating assessment. METHODS: In this observational study, adults with overweight or obesity underwent a standardized mixed-meal satiety test using visual analogue scales together with emotional eating assessment using the Emotional Eating Questionnaire.

Transcript of protein kinase A knock-down modulates feeding behavior and neuropeptide Y gene expression in phenylpropanolamine-treated rats.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is an appetite-controlling neuromodulator that contributes to the appetite-suppressing effect of phenylpropanolamine (PPA). Aims of this study were to investigate whether protein kinase A (PKA) signaling is involved in regulating NPY gene expression and PPA-induced anorexia. Rats were given daily with PPA for 5 days. Changes in daily food intake and hypothalamic NPY, PKA, cAMP response element binding protein (CREB), and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) gene expression were measured and compared. To further determine if PKA was involved, intracerebroventricular infusions of ant

LAPAROSCOPIC-ASSISTED INSERTION OF A VENTRICULOPERITONEAL SHUNT IN A RESCUED ASIATIC BLACK BEAR (URSUS THIBETANUS) IN LAOS.

A 3-yr-old Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus), weighing 68 kg, underwent a laparoscopic-assisted placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt for hydrocephalus in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Rescued as a young cub with a notably domed head, the bear's condition had deteriorated with age, but euthanasia was not a viable option because of cultural issues. Surgery was attempted as a palliative measure. The bear had ventrally orientated crossed eyes (abducens nerve palsy and dorsal midbrain syndrome), papilledema, severe rhinorrhea, depressed mentation, lethargy, a very poor appetite, an

Effects of hypophysectomy and substitution with growth hormone, prolactin, and thyroxine on growth and deposition in juvenile frogs, Xenopus laevis.

Growth was studied in young metamorphosed frogs, Xenopus laevis, following hypophysectomy and substitution with mammalian growth hormone (bGH or pGH), mammalian prolactin (oPRL), and thyroxine. Hypophysectomy reduced growth (weight and length increase). GH and PRL proved equally efficient in restoring growth and in mobilizing energy stores (fat bodies and liver glycogen). No synergistic effects between GH and PRL could be observed. GH exerted its growth-promoting effects by increasing gross food conversion efficiency (weight increase/food intake), but did not stimulate appetite. Moderate GH do

Digital Behavioral Infrastructure for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Pharmacotherapy: Viewpoint on Persistence, Tolerability, and Postcessation Durability.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) induce clinically meaningful weight loss, but their real-world impact is constrained by poor medication persistence, treatment-limiting gastrointestinal adverse effects, and rapid weight regain after cessation. These limitations may be structural rather than incidental: GLP-1 RAs powerfully address appetite biology but do not build the behavioral skills, environmental supports, and routines needed to sustain outcomes when biological pressures revert to baseline. This viewpoint argues that theory-based digital health companion programs are b

Direct, continuous behavioral analysis of drug action on feeding.

Analysis of rodent feeding behavior during the study of anorectic drugs reveals that contextual variables such as type of food, drug, environment, and physiological state influence food intake. Temporal changes in behavior can signal the onset of a feeding modulation process, as is the case with anorectic drugs acting on distinct neurochemical mechanisms that change temporal behavioral profiles. Comparing the effects of anorectic agents in controlled animal assays can identify potential therapeutic drugs that may influence human eating behavior. This unit specifies the materials and procedures

Role of medial hypothalamic orexin system in panic, phobia and hypertension.

Orexin has been implicated in a number of physiological functions, including arousal, regulation of sleep, energy metabolism, appetitive behaviors, stress, anxiety, fear, panic, and cardiovascular control. In this review, we will highlight research focused on orexin system in the medial hypothalamic regions of perifornical (PeF) and dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH), and describe the role of this hypothalamic neuropeptide in the behavioral expression of panic and consequent fear and avoidance responses, as well as sympathetic regulation and possible development of chronic hypertension. We will al

Translocation and neurotoxicity of CdTe quantum dots in RMEs motor neurons in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

We employed Caenorhabditis elegans assay system to investigate in vivo neurotoxicity of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) on RMEs motor neurons, which are involved in controlling foraging behavior, and the underlying mechanism of such neurotoxicity. After prolonged exposure to 0.1-1 μg/L of CdTe QDs, abnormal foraging behavior and deficits in development of RMEs motor neurons were observed. The observed neurotoxicity from CdTe QDs on RMEs motor neurons might be not due to released Cd(2+). Overexpression of genes encoding Mn-SODs or unc-30 gene controlling cell identity of RMEs neurons prevented neurotox

Serotonergic psychedelics and amphetamine shift male rat ultrasonic vocalizations toward call patterns associated with positively valenced states.

Psychedelics and psychostimulants produce subjective and often positive affective effects in humans. In rats, positive affective states are often associated with frequency-modulated ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). We examined whether the hallucinogenic 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI; 1.25-2.5 mg/kg) and LSD (0.04-0.08 mg/kg), the non-hallucinogenic lisuride (0.03 or 0.3 mg/kg) and the psychostimulant amphetamine (1 mg/kg) modulate USV emission, activity, and head-twitch response (HTR) in male Wistar rats. USVs were detected using DeepSqueak and clustered in a custom, unsupervised manner

Behavioral Phenotyping of Dopamine Transporter Knockout Rats: Compulsive Traits, Motor Stereotypies, and Anhedonia.

Alterations in dopamine neurotransmission are generally associated with diseases such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Such diseases typically feature poor decision making and lack of control on executive functions and have been studied through the years using many animal models. Dopamine transporter (DAT) knockout (KO) and heterozygous (HET) mice, in particular, have been widely used to study ADHD. Recently, a strain of DAT KO rats has been developed (1). Here, we provide a phenotypic characterization of reward sensitivity and compuls

The Novel μ-Opioid Receptor Antagonist GSK1521498 Decreases Both Alcohol Seeking and Drinking: Evidence from a New Preclinical Model of Alcohol Seeking.

Distinct environmental and conditioned stimuli influencing ethanol-associated appetitive and consummatory behaviors may jointly contribute to alcohol addiction. To develop an effective translational animal model that illuminates this interaction, daily seeking responses, maintained by alcohol-associated conditioned stimuli (CSs), need to be dissociated from alcohol drinking behavior. For this, we established a procedure whereby alcohol seeking maintained by alcohol-associated CSs is followed by a period during which rats have the opportunity to drink alcohol. This cue-controlled alcohol-seekin
