Outcome of tuberculous meningitis in children aged 9 months to 12 years at the end of intensive phase of treatment.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Most of the literature focuses on outcomes at the end of therapy when it may be too late for intervention to improve the outcomes. So, the present study addresses outcomes by the end of intensive course of therapy. METHODS: It was a prospective cohort observational study that enrolled 80 patients with TBM between 9 months and 12 years of age. Participants were classified into Definite, Probable and Possible TBM using Marais criteria. Survival/Mortality was evaluated at the end of hospital stay. Demograph

Association of Unilateral and Bilateral Speech-In-Noise Hearing Status With Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Although hearing loss is a well-established risk factor for dementia, previous studies predominantly focused on peripheral hearing sensitivity, overlooking deficits in central auditory processing as measured by speech-in-noise (SIN) testing. This study aims to investigate the association between bilateral SIN hearing loss and the risk of all-cause dementia, and to examine how cognitive reserve (CR) modifies this association. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study utilizing data from the UK Biobank, a large, population-based cohort. Participants were recruited between 200

Patient-reported outcomes and speech-in-noise performance with OSIA versus other transcranial devices in unilateral and asymmetric hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Single-sided deafness (SSD) and asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) impair binaural hearing, reducing speech-in-noise perception, sound localization, and quality of life. Treatment options include bone conduction devices (BAHA, Bonebridge, OSIA) and CROS/BICROS hearing aids. The OSIA system is the most recent option, but comparative real-life data, particularly on patient-reported outcomes, remain scarce. This is the first study to assess the OSIA system in SSD and AHL patients using the Bern Benefit in Single-Sided Deafness (BBSS) questionnaire. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed SS

Beyond motor recovery: emerging perspectives in the management of peripheral facial palsy-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) is a common cranial nerve disorder that may result in persistent impairments extending beyond facial muscle weakness, including facial asymmetry, synkinesis, altered emotional expression, and reduced quality of life. Traditional rehabilitation approaches have predominantly focused on motor recovery and facial muscle function. However, emerging evidence suggests that somatosensory processing, body awareness, body image, and sensorimotor integration may play a more substantial role in recovery and long-term outcomes than previously recognized. Chronic Auditory-Nerve Implant Enhances Brainstem Phase Locking to Electric Pulse Trains.

PURPOSE: Present-day cochlear implants (CIs) can deliver usable speech reception in quiet surroundings. Most CI users, however, show impaired sensitivity to temporal fine structure, which hampers their use of pitch contours and spatial cues to segregate competing talkers. In previous short-term animal studies, we used intraneural (IN) electrodes to stimulate pathways originating from various cochlear turns. Neurons in the inferior colliculus synchronized to apical stimulation at higher rates than to stimulation of the middle-to-basal pathways that are stimulated primarily by today's CIs. Here,
