Recognition and management of acute pesticide poisoning.

Most poisonings from pesticides do not have a specific antidote, making decontamination the most important intervention. For maximal benefit to the patient, skin, eye, and gastric decontamination should be undertaken while specifics of the poisoning are being determined. As in most illnesses and injuries, the history of the poisoning is of great importance and will determine specific needs for decontamination and therapy, if any exist. Protection of health care workers during the decontamination process is important and frequently overlooked. Skin decontamination is primarily accomplished with

Spinetoram resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda: Molecular mechanisms, diagnostic tools, and management implications.

Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm) has emerged as a major global pest of maize and other crops. Spinetoram, a widely used spinosyn insecticide, has played a central role in its management; however, increasing reports of resistance threaten the long-term sustainability of this compound. This review synthesizes current knowledge on spinetoram resistance in S. frugiperda, encompassing field reports, underlying molecular mechanisms, and emerging diagnostic approaches. Clear evidence of resistance has been reported from Brazil, whereas studies from China and Pakistan indicate emerging resistance

Structural differences in gut bacteria communities in developmental stages of natural populations of Lutzomyia evansi from Colombia's Caribbean coast.

BACKGROUND: Lutzomyia evansi, a phlebotomine insect endemic to Colombia's Caribbean coast, is considered to be the main vector of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the region. Although insects of this species can harbor pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms in their intestinal microbiota, there is little information available about the diversity of gut bacteria present in Lutzomyia evansi. In this study, conventional microbiological methods and molecular tools were used to assess the composition of bacterial communities associated with Lutzomyia evansi guts in immature and adult s

Long-lasting microbial larvicides for controlling insecticide resistant and outdoor transmitting vectors: a cost-effective supplement for malaria interventions.

The issues of pyrethroid resistance and outdoor malaria parasite transmission have prompted the WHO to call for the development and adoption of viable alternative vector control methods. Larval source management is one of the core malaria vector interventions recommended by the Ministry of Health in many African countries, but it is rarely implemented due to concerns on its cost-effectiveness. New long-lasting microbial larvicide can be a promising cost-effective supplement to current vector control and elimination methods because microbial larvicide uses killing mechanisms different from pyre

Comparative Physiological and Metabolic Analysis Reveals a Complex Mechanism Involved in Drought Tolerance in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Induced by PGPR and PGRs.

The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and plant growth regulators (PGRs) can be applied to improve the growth and productivity of plants, with potential to be used for genetic improvement of drought tolerance. However, for genetic improvement to be achieved, a solid understanding of the physiological and biochemical changes in plants induced by PGPR and PGR is required. The present study was carried out to investigate the role of PGPR and PGRs on the physiology and biochemical changes in chickpea grown under drought stress conditions and their association with drought tolerance. Knockout of SfVipR2 confers Vip3Aa resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda with evidence of genetic complementation among non-allelic mutations of SfVipR1, SfVipR2, and SfCHS2.

The Vip3Aa protein from Bacillus thuringiensis is widely deployed in transgenic crops to control lepidopteran pests, including the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, a highly invasive, polyphagous pest of global importance. Loss-of-function mutations in SfVipR1 (a thyroglobulin-like gene) and SfCHS2 (chitin synthase 2) have previously been confirmed to confer high-level, recessive resistance to Vip3Aa in S. frugiperda. A second thyroglobulin-like gene (HaVipR2) has recently been recognized as an important determinant of Vip3Aa resistance in Helicoverpa armigera. In this study, we first confi

Rapid-Response Vector Surveillance and Emergency Control During the Largest West Nile Virus Outbreak in Southern Spain.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is an emerging arboviral threat in Europe, with rising incidence in Spain since 2004. In 2024, Spain experienced its largest outbreak, primarily in small urban areas of south-western regions. We report a subset of an emergency integrated vector management program, focusing on six municipalities accounting for one-third of all human WNV cases nationwide. Over four months, 725 potential larval sites were inspected during 4026 visits. Adult mosquitoes (n = 2553) were collected with suction traps, and immature stages (n = 4457) with dipper techniques, yielding 11 species. Cul

Evaluation of personal inhalable aerosol samplers with different filters for use during anthrax responses.

Risk of inhalation exposure to viable Bacillus anthracis (B. anthracis) spores has primarily been assessed using short-term, stationary sampling methods which may not accurately characterize the concentration of inhalable-sized spores reaching a person's breathing zone. While a variety of aerosol sampling methods have been utilized during previous anthrax responses, no consensus has yet been established for personal air sampling. The goal of this study was to determine the best sampler-filter combination(s) for the collection and extraction of B. anthracis spores. The study was designed to (1)

Phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C cyclic phosphodiesterase activity depends on solvent polarity.

Large enhancements (maximum of 82-fold in terms of enzyme efficiency, Vmax/Km) of bacterial PI-PLC cyclic phosphodiesterase activity were observed in the presence of organic solvents miscible in water (dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, and 2-propanol). In general, organic solvents lowered the Km for myo-inositol 1,2-cyclic phosphate (cIP) and increased Vmax substantially. This kinetic effect was similar to that obtained with phosphatidylcholine micelles and bilayers in an aqueous assay system for cyclic inositol phosphate hydrolysis [Zhou, C., et al. (1997) Biochemistry 36, 347-355]. Solv

Root exudate-derived compounds stimulate the phosphorus solubilizing ability of bacteria.

Low phosphorus (P) availability in soils is a major challenge for sustainable food production, as most soil P is often unavailable for plant uptake and effective strategies to access this P are limited. Certain soil occurring bacteria and root exudate-derived compounds that release P are in combination promising tools to develop applications that increase phosphorus use efficiency in crops. Here, we studied the ability of root exudate compounds (galactinol, threonine, and 4-hydroxybutyric acid) induced under low P conditions to stimulate the ability of bacteria to solubilize P. Evidence for multiple-insecticide resistance in urban Aedes albopictus populations in southern China.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus (Skuse) is an invasive mosquito that has become an important vector of chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses. In the absence of specific antiviral therapy or a vaccine, vector management is the sole method available for reducing Aedes-induced disease morbidity. Determining the resistance status of Ae. albopictus to insecticides and exploring the resistance mechanisms is essential for future vector control planning. METHODS: Aedes albopictus larvae and pupae were sampled from six sites (two sites each from urban, suburban and rural) in Guangzhou. The resistance bioa

Microbial biopesticides for insect pest management in India: Current status and future prospects.

The biopesticide industry in India is undergoing rapid change, reflecting increased global trade in agricultural commodities, a changing regulatory environment and evolving consumer preferences. Currently biopesticides comprise ≈ 5% of the Indian pesticide market, with at least 15 microbial species and 970 microbial formulations registered through the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIBRC). As of 2017, over 200 products based on entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria bassiana, B. brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae s.l., Lecanicillium lecanii and Hirsutella thompsonii) and n

EMIRA: Ecologic Malaria Reduction for Africa--innovative tools for integrated malaria control.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control is based on early treatment of cases and on vector control. The current measures for malaria vector control in Africa are mainly based on long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) and to a much smaller extent on indoor residual spraying (IRS). A third pillar in the fight against the malaria vector, larval source management (LSM), has virtually not been used in Africa since the ban of DDT in the 1960s. Within the light of recent WHO recommendations for Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) use against malaria and other vector species, larval source management

A two-generation reproduction study with transgenic Bt rice TT51 in Wistar rats.

TT51 is a transgenic Bt rice created by fusion a synthetic CryAb/CryAc gene into rice MingHui63. A significant number of animal feeding studies with transgenic crops have been carried out with the rapid development of transgenic crops. However, the evidence is far from identifying whether certain novel transgenic crops possess potential danger for human or animal health after long-term consumption. Rice-based diets, containing 60% ordinary grocery rice, MingHui63 rice or TT51 rice by weight, were fed to two generations of male and female rats in order to determine the potential reproductive ef

Western corn rootworm larval movement in SmartStax seed blend scenarios.

Insect resistance management (IRM) can extend the lifetime of management options, but depends on extensive knowledge of the biology of the pest species involved for an optimal plan. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered seed blends refuge for two of the transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn products targeting the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte. Larval movement between Bt and isoline plants can be detrimental to resistance management for high dose Bt products because the larger larvae can be more tolerant of the Bt toxins. We assesse

Day/night temperature fluctuations delay the high-temperature-induced decline in Cry1Ac endotoxin concentration in cotton squares.

INTRODUCTION: High-temperature stress significantly impacts Cry1Ac endotoxin efficacy in Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton, yet the effects of realistic day/night temperature fluctuation remain unclear. METHODS: Hence, a 2-year (2021-2022) plot experiment was carried out to investigate the response of square Cry1Ac endotoxin concentration to fluctuating high temperature (HDT/NNT, 38/27 °C) compared with a control treatment (CK, 32/25 °C) in cultivars 'Sikang 1' and 'Sikang 3'. RESULTS: The results indicated that the Cry1Ac endotoxin concentration remained stable under CK but decreased signi
