Climatic factors drive global viral respiratory infections with regional heterogeneity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is altering global respiratory virus transmission, yet pathogen-specific climate sensitivities remain unclear across diverse geographical settings. METHODS: We searched six databases (inception-10 May 2024) for studies quantifying associations between climate factors and virus respiratory infections (VRIs). Random-effects models pooled relative risks (RRs) per unit increase in temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and wind speed, with climate sensitivity assessed by Köppen-Geiger zones. RESULTS: From 108 studies comprising 9.22 million VRI cases, three cli

Epidemiological analysis of pediatric respiratory pathogens in Hunan, China: a retrospective multicenter study from 2022 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: The zero-COVID policy and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) implemented in response to COVID-19 concurrently influenced the transmission of other respiratory pathogens. In the post-pandemic era following the policy's cessation, whether the epidemiological patterns of these respiratory pathogens have reverted to pre-pandemic baselines or persisted unchanged remains a subject of interest. METHODS: The retrospective study analyzed 8,774 cases with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) from 2022 to 2024, with data sourced from 26 children's hospitals or general hospitals in

Epidemiology and Diagnostic Accuracy of Respiratory Pathogens in Pediatric Populations: Insights From Global Studies.

Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are the most common cause for going to the doctor's at pediatric age. Respiratory infections are still of interest because they are widespread, significantly impact public health by potentially leading to pandemics, drive antimicrobial resistance through antibiotic misuse, more often spread globally due to traveling, and benefit from ongoing advancements in diagnostics and research for better management. This paper's main aim was to offer a systematic review of the literature published over the last 10 years on the etiology of LRTIs. The search strate

Associations between pathogens in the upper respiratory tract of young children: interplay between viruses and bacteria.

BACKGROUND: High rates of potentially pathogenic bacteria and respiratory viruses can be detected in the upper respiratory tract of healthy children. Investigating presence of and associations between these pathogens in healthy individuals is still a rather unexplored field of research, but may have implications for interpreting findings during disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We selected 986 nasopharyngeal samples from 433 6- to 24-month-old healthy children that had participated in a randomized controlled trial. We determined the presence of 20 common respiratory viruses using real-

Ecological reshaping of pediatric respiratory pathogen profiles after COVID-19-related non-pharmaceutical interventions were lifted: a 5-year interrupted time-series study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19-related non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) disrupted the circulation of many respiratory pathogens. After these measures were lifted, pediatric respiratory pathogen activity may have changed in pathogen-specific ways. However, laboratory-based evidence using continuous multi-year data, interrupted time-series analysis, and contextual factors such as meteorology, air quality, and school calendars remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective laboratory study of pediatric and neonatal inpatients aged 0-14 years with clinically diagnosed lower res

Livestock aggregated samples for monitoring viruses infecting animals and potentially zoonotic viral pathogens.

Active surveillance of livestock pathogens is essential to prevent animal health losses and zoonotic spillover. This study evaluted aggregated environmental sampling as a non-invasive approach for monitoring swine- and cattle-associated viruses across farms and slaughterhouses, bridging the gap between agricultural biosecurity and public health. Over eleven months, 105 samples, including swine slurry, cattle manure, farm air, and slaughterhouse wastewater, were collected and analyzed using pathogen-specific (RT) qPCR and targeted viral metagenomics. Seasonal and sample patterns were evident, w
