The relationship between the intramuscular bleeding of the tongue and cause of death.

Intramuscular bleeding of the tongue (ImBT) is occasionally found during post mortem examination. Despite its frequent reports, its cause has not yet been clarified. In this study, forensic autopsy data of 799 cadavers were examined and the relationship between ImBT and cause of death was investigated. A total of 74 cases showed ImBT (16 of 66 cases of fire fatality, 17 of 108 cases of drowning, 23 of 74 cases of asphyxiation, and 18 of 551 cases of other causes of death). The frequency of bleeding was significantly greater in cases with causes of death including fire fatality, drowning, and a

Carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning in fire related deaths in Victoria, Australia.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to examine the association of hydrogen cyanide and carboxyhaemoglobin in victims of fire related deaths in Australia. The secondary aim was to document demographic data about Australian fire related deaths. METHODS: An observational retrospective study was undertaken of autopsy reports from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. Reports of fire related deaths were electronically searched using the terms burns, "smoke" or "fire" as a cause of death in the calender years 1992 to 1998. Data on the circumstances of the fire and results of toxicological

Hyaluronate levels and markers of oxidative stress in the serum of Sudanese subjects at risk of infection with Schistosoma mansoni.

We showed previously that infection by Schistosoma mansoni not only triggers the production of reactive oxygen species in mouse liver but also leads to the alteration of antioxidant defences. To determine whether such events occur in humans, we measured the serum markers of oxidative stress, i.e., lipid peroxides and protein carbonyl, as well as hyaluronate levels in subjects in the Managil area of the Sudan. Grades of fibrosis were determined by ultrasonographic examination. Two groups were used as controls, one Sudanese and the other European. We found that Sudanese subjects in the endemic a

Accuracy of pulse oximetry in children with cyanotic congenital heart disease.

The use of a pulse oximeter to monitor arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) is considered accurate and reliable in the range of 90% to 100%. However, differing reports exist about the accuracy with desaturation. Thus, the suitability of pulse oximetry in desaturated patients was evaluated using a Nellcor N-100 oximeter. In 56 children with cyanotic congenital heart disease, the pulse oximeter reading was compared with the direct measurement of SaO2 by a CO-oximeter OSM 3. The influence of high hematocrit values on the accuracy at low saturation was also investigated. All oxygen saturation measure

The Clinical Association between Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Myocardial Injury as Measured by Elevated Troponin I Levels.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning accounts for over 50,000 estimated emergency room visits and approximately 1200 deaths per year in the US. Despite the high prevalence, there is a paucity of data looking at the association between laboratory biomarkers and clinical outcomes. Our study investigates the association between myocardial injury as assessed by increased troponin levels and its effect on in-hospital outcomes in CO poisoning. A total of 900 sequential charts of patients presenting with CO poisoning between 1 January 2012, and 31 August 2019, at our tertiary center with regional hyperbari

Evaluation of post-mortem oxymetry with reference to the causes of death.

We examined blood samples of 214 forensic autopsy cases, excluding fire victims, on a CO-oximeter system in order to evaluate post-mortem oxymetric profiles with reference to the causes of death. Oxyhemoglobin (O2-Hb) levels in the left and right heart blood, respectively, ranged from 0 to 97.7% and from 0 to 92.1%, showing no apparent correlation with the post-mortem intervals or rectal temperatures. In nearly 60% of the cases, O2-Hb was lower than 10%. A high O2-Hb level (over 50%) in the left heart blood was most frequently observed in death from cold exposure and occasionally in fatalities

Effects of Switching to the Tobacco Heating System 2.2 Menthol, Smoking Abstinence, or Continued Cigarette Smoking on Biomarkers of Exposure: A Randomized, Controlled, Open-Label, Multicenter Study in Sequential Confinement and Ambulatory Settings (Part 1).

INTRODUCTION: The menthol Tobacco Heating System 2.2 (mTHS) is a newly developed candidate modified-risk tobacco product intended to reduce exposure to the harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) of conventional cigarette (CC) smoke. This study examined the impact of switching to mTHS on biomarkers of exposure to HPHCs relative to menthol CCs (mCCs) and smoking abstinence (SA). METHODS: In this three-arm, parallel-group study, 160 Japanese adult smokers (23-65 years; smoking ≥10 mCCs per day) were randomized to mTHS (n = 78), mCC (n = 42), or SA (n = 40) for 5 days in confinement

Effect of inhalation injury on lung water accumulation.

Fourteen thermally injured patients with severe inhalation injury were sequentially studied with the thermal-green dye double indicator dilution technique of extravascular lung water (EVLW) measurement. Eight females and six males (average age, 49 years, and average thermal burn, 37% body surface) were studied for 2-31 days postinjury. All were burned in a closed space, had facial burns, soot in their sputum, and a mean carboxyhemoglobin level of 30%. Nine patients died, six of sepsis, one each of acute renal failure, hepatorenal syndrome, and anoxic brain damage. Mean EVLW on admission was 7.

Analysis of fire deaths in Poland and influence of smoke toxicity.

Dwelling fires have changed over the years because building contents and the materials used in then have changed. They all contribute to an ever-growing diversity of chemical species found in fires, many of them highly toxic. These arise largely from the changing nature of materials in interior finishes and furniture, with an increasing content of synthetic materials containing higher levels of nitrogen, halogen and phosphorus additives. While there is still a belief that carbon monoxide is the major lethal toxic agent in fires, the hydrogen cyanide and acid gases released from these additives

Arterialization of peripheral venous blood in sickle cell disease.

Arterialization of the venous blood is thought to be indicative of cutaneous shunting, and occurs in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) during vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC). We performed the present study to quantify the amount of shunting that occurs in sickle cell patients presenting at the Howard University Sickle Cell Center, Washington, D.C., as outpatients and for hospitalizations associated with sickle cell crisis. Peripheral venous blood was drawn anaerobically into heparinized syringes from 9 normal control subjects (NC), 24 outpatients (steady-state group), and 14 inpatients durin

Selected and shared hematological responses to apnea in elite human free divers and northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris).

Despite elite human free divers achieving incredible feats in competitive free diving, there has yet to be a study that compares consummate divers, (i.e. northern elephant seals) to highly conditioned free divers (i.e., elite competitive free-diving humans). Herein, we compare these two diving models and suggest that hematological traits detected in seals reflect species-specific specializations, while hematological traits shared between the two species are fundamental mammalian characteristics. Arterial blood samples were analyzed in elite human free divers (n = 14) during a single, maximal v

Burning questions: A 10-year retrospective study of fatal burn cases in the Eastern Metropolitan area of Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization estimates that annually, 300,000 deaths are flame- or fire-related. Burn injuries represent a significant portion of global morbidity and mortality. South Africa experiences a high incidence of fatal burn injuries, particularly in informal settlements where fire safety measures are often inadequate. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compile a descriptive profile of fire-associated fatalities, highlighting demographic trends, temporal characteristics, causes, and circumstances of death. The secondary objectives were to determine evidence of vitality, path

Entomotoxicology in burnt bodies: a case of maternal filicide-suicide by fire.

One of the most common methods of maternal filicide is by fire. In this case study, a 40-year-old female and her children were found completely burned in a burnt out car. All bodies showed a degree of destruction by fire consisting to a level 3 of the Crow-Glassman Scale (CGS) and early stage of insect activity. Toxicological analyses were performed on soft tissues and body fluids still available. The results were positive for diazepam and its metabolites only for children with blood concentrations consistent with therapeutic doses of benzodiazepines. Home video surveillance cameras confirmed

Evaluation of postmortem serum and cerebrospinal fluid growth hormone levels in relation to the cause of death in forensic autopsy.

Previous studies have shown that postmortem serum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were significantly lower in cases of asphyxia and poisoning than in other groups, whereas ACTH levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were significantly lower for hypothermia and hyperthermia. This study comparatively analyzed growth hormone (GH) levels in serum and CSF in relation to cause of death in routine forensic work. Autopsy cases (n = 116), including cases of blunt injury, sharp instrument injury, fire fatality, asphyxia, drowning, hypothermia, and acute myocardial infarction/ischemia (AMI), we

Problems associated with the diagnosis of vitality in burned bodies.

The most important signs of vitality in burned bodies are soot deposits in the respiratory tract, the esophagus and the stomach as well as elevated CO-Hb values in the blood. But these findings show only that a person was exposed to fire fumes while alive; they are no indicator for vital heat exposure. As the external findings in burned bodies are often not very conclusive due to postmortem consumption by the fire, the internal findings are all the more important. Macroscopic signs that hot fumes were inhaled may be edematous swelling and vesicular detachment of the mucosa in the pharynx, the
