Evarts Ambrose Graham (1883-1957), doyen of pulmonary surgeons.

Evarts Graham performed the first successful pneumonectomy in 1933. Evarts Ambrose Graham, the son of a Scotch Irish surgeon, was born on 19 March 1883. After early schooling in Chicago, he graduated at Princeton and returned to Chicago to study Medicine, taking his MD at Rush Medical College in 1907. The chemical aspects of pathological changes then occupied him fully until 1919, when he was appointed full-time professor of surgery at the Washington School of Medicine in St Louis. Visualisation of gallstones temporarily took his attention, but bronchogenic carcinoma was seldom far from his th

Adolf Lorenz and the Lolita Armour Case.

Almost 120 years ago, in 1902, the American multimillionaire J. Ogden Armour invited the Austrian orthopaedic surgeon Adolf Lorenz, professor at the University of Vienna, to treat his daughter Lolita. Lolita was born premature in 1896 and spent the first months of her life in an incubator. Later she was diagnosed with congenital dislocation of both hips. Lorenz had developed a "bloodless" treatment method and was invited by the Armour family to Chicago to "operate" on Lolita. Both hips had already been treated by an American orthopaedic surgeon before but without a satisfactory result. Lorenz

Accessible Clinical Tool for Prognosis and Chemotherapy Prediction in Hormone Receptor-Positive/Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2-Negative Breast Cancer in Diverse and Low-Resource Settings.

PURPOSE: Genomic assays are commonly used to predict breast cancer recurrence but remain inaccessible in low-resource settings, often leading to unnecessary chemotherapy. We previously optimized a LASSO-penalized regression model incorporating quantitative clinicopathologic features to predict genomic risk. Here, we present validation and clinical utility in an international cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with early-stage hormone receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative breast cancer treated in Chicago and Rio de Janeiro. Model accuracy for pr

Evaluation of Recruitment Approaches in Community-Based HIV Prevention Research: Insights From an Innovation Tournament.

CONTEXT: Participatory methods facilitate end-user engagement with research and rely on strategies that successfully recruit community participants. An innovation tournament successfully crowdsourced ideas for the implementation of long-acting, injectable preexposure prophylaxis among sexual minority men (SMM) in Chicago. Evaluation of the success of recruitment strategies will provide insights on this community-facing participatory approach. OBJECTIVE: This work evaluated the reach and cost of the recruitment strategies deployed during the innovation tournament. DESIGN: Advertisement method

Examining Time to Treatment and the Role of School-Based Health Centers in a School-Based Sexually Transmitted Infection Program.

BACKGROUND: Barriers to health care service utilization contribute to the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among teens. School-based STI screening programs reach adolescents outside of the clinic-based health care model and schools with school-based health centers (SBHCs) may expedite treatment because of their proximity to the population. This study examined whether students who tested positive for STIs in a school-based screening program had differing times to treatment based on treatment location. METHODS: All positive cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea from the 2012-2013 sch

Plasma markers of neurological injury are elevated in preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia, a medical complication of pregnancy, is associated with central nervous system (CNS) signs and symptoms, such as headache, hyperexcitability, hyperreflexia, visual disturbances, and seizures (referred to as eclampsia). We hypothesized that markers of neurological injury such as plasma neurofilaments comprising light chains (NfL) and phosphorylated heavy chains (pNfH), would be elevated in preeclampsia and could serve as biomarkers of severity of preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: We first tested NfL and pNfH in nested case-control study from a third trimester plasma bank fro

The Effect of Race in Patients with Achalasia Diagnosed With High-Resolution Esophageal Manometry.

BACKGROUND: The advent of the Chicago Classification for esophageal motility disorders allowed for clinically reproducible subgrouping of patients with achalasia based on manometric phenotype. However, there are limited data with regards to racial variation using high-resolution esophageal manometry (HREM). The aim of our study was to evaluate the racial differences in patients with achalasia diagnosed with HREM using the Chicago Classification. We evaluated the clinical presentation, treatment decisions and outcomes between blacks and non-blacks with achalasia to identify potential racial dis

[Therapy of esophageal motility disorders].

Esophageal motility disorders are diseases in which there are malfunctions of the act of swallowing due to a change in neuromuscular structures. The main symptom is therefore dysphagia for solid and/or liquid foods, often accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, regurgitation, heartburn, and weight loss. Esophageal manometry is the gold standard in diagnostics. Endoscopy and radiology serve to exclude inflammatory or malignant changes. With the introduction of high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM), the diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders has improved and led to a new classificat

The intrauterine device and ovarian pregnancy.

Within a 1-year period, three patients presenting to the University of Chicago, Chicago Lying-In Hospital with a complaint of lower abdominal pain were diagnosed at laparotomy to have ovarian pregnancies according to the criteria of Spiegelberg. All of the patients were at the time using the Copper-7 intrauterine device for contraception. There are now 50 known cases of ovarian pregnancies in patients using the intrauterine device (IUD). The characteristics of these patients do not differ markedly from those previously reported in studies on tubal pregnancies, with and without the IUD, but the

Socioeconomic Disparities in Gentle Skin Care Access for Atopic Dermatitis: Affordability and Pharmacy Deserts.

BACKGROUND: Gentle skin care is key to atopic dermatitis (AD) treatment, yet products are often expensive. Pharmacy deserts may exacerbate socioeconomic disparities in AD. OBJECTIVE: To compare the price of dermatologist-recommended skin care to popularly purchased products, and to assess the prevalence and accessibility of pharmacy retailers selling these products in low- versus high-income zip codes. RESULTS: National Eczema Association (NEA)-recommended products were more expensive than popularly purchased products for moisturizing lotions ($2.72/oz vs $1.13/oz, P<0.0001) and liquid bo

Edward S. Miller: Physician, entrepreneur, and community leader (1858-1942).

Edward S. Miller was born into slavery in 1858. After navigating the racist educational system in Kentucky, he moved north to seek greater opportunities. In Chicago, he obtained medical training, built a practice in the Black community, and participated in the growth of Provident Hospital. He earned broad respect and expanded his networks, serving in the Spanish American War as a field surgeon for a unique Black volunteer regiment. He prospered as an entrepreneur and civic leader, using the power of community networks to help found the first Black cemetery and a federally chartered bank in Chi

Regional disparities in the incidence of elevated blood pressure among young adults: the CARDIA study.

BACKGROUND: Within the United States, little is known about regional disparities in blood pressure (BP), their changes over time, or explanations for their existence. METHODS AND RESULTS: A population-based cohort of 5115 black and white men and women, 18 to 30 years old in 1985-1986 (balanced on age, race, sex, and education), was followed up for 7 years in four centers: Birmingham, Ala; Chicago, Ill; Minneapolis, Minn; and Oakland, Calif. Differences in elevated BP (EBP) prevalence among centers at years 0, 2, 5, and 7 and in 7-year incidence of EBP were assessed. Sociodemographic and dieta

The Social Context of HIV Prevention and Care among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in Three U.S. Cities: The Neighborhoods and Networks (N2) Cohort Study.

Background: In many parts of the world, stark racial disparities in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence, incidence, prevention, and care outcomes persist among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), with Black MSM significantly impacted in the United States (U.S.). Individual-level characteristics, including sexual behaviors and socioeconomic status, do not fully account for racial/ethnic disparities in HIV among MSM. We hypothesize that neighborhood contexts and network characteristics influence risk for HIV infection as well as HIV-related prevention and care beh

How Community-Based Organizations View and Use Data: Practices, Challenges, and Opportunities.

This analysis aimed to define the data needs of community-based organizations (CBOs) after the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design during the summer/fall of 2023, 51 CBOs completed surveys and 24 participated in subsequent interviews. The CBOs provided social services to Black, Latinx, Asian, and/or low-income communities in the Chicago region. They varied in size, funding sources, and focus areas. Results showed that all used data, and 82.4% used population-level data. Data use expansion was limited by funding, staffing, data management systems, and skills
