[Polymorphisms in Sleep and Cognitive Function Related Genes are Associated with Vehicle Crash History in Shift Working Bus Drivers].

Bus driving is a highly responsible profession. It requires constant engagement of attention and cog- nitive resources as well as vigilance and resistance to disruption of sleep- rhythms. There is ongoing research of genetic correlates of these individual characteristics. The aim of this study is to search for possible connections between single nucleotide polymorphisms and the history of road traffic accidents in professional bus driving. 299 professional drives working on rolling shifts with recorded history of traffic accidents took part in the study. Polymorphisms in circadian rhythm-, cog

Gut microbiota, sleep and coronary artery disease: A Mendelian randomization study.

Inadequate and poor-quality sleep is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). Gut microbiota may play a role in sleep regulation. However, the associations between gut microbiota, sleep, and CAD risk, and the causal nature of these associations, remain unclear. We performed a 2-step Mendelian randomization analysis using summary-level data to assess the association between gut microbiota and CAD and the potential mediating roles of sleep-related traits (i.e., chronotype, insomnia, sleep duration, short sleep, and long sleep) herein. The inverse-variance weigh

Reviewing the complex relationship between circadian rhythms and cluster headache.

Cluster headache attacks display uniquely rhythmic patterns in their manifestations. Multiple international studies have shown circadian and even circannual timing of attacks, although we do not yet fully understand the effects of culture, sleep, chronotype, seasonal changes, temperature or inter-individual changes over time. Multiple cluster headache treatments alter the core circadian oscillator, although they affect the oscillator differently and are not well understood. Multiple small genetic studies have shown core circadian gene variants to be cluster headache susceptibility genes, where

Genome-wide association analysis of self-reported daytime sleepiness identifies 42 loci that suggest biological subtypes.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) affects 10-20% of the population and is associated with substantial functional deficits. Here, we identify 42 loci for self-reported daytime sleepiness in GWAS of 452,071 individuals from the UK Biobank, with enrichment for genes expressed in brain tissues and in neuronal transmission pathways. We confirm the aggregate effect of a genetic risk score of 42 SNPs on daytime sleepiness in independent Scandinavian cohorts and on other sleep disorders (restless legs syndrome, insomnia) and sleep traits (duration, chronotype, accelerometer-derived sleep efficiency a

Circadian markers as a predictor of response in the treatment of depression-A systematic review.

Despite many available treatment options for depression, response rates remain suboptimal. To improve outcome, circadian markers may be suitable as markers of treatment response. This systematic review provides an overview of circadian markers that have been studied as predictors of response in treatment of depression. A search was performed (EMBASE, PUBMED, PSYCHINFO) for research studies or articles, randomized controlled trials and case report/series with no time boundaries on March 2, 2024 (PROSPERO: CRD42021252333). Other criteria were; an antidepressant treatment as intervention, treatme

Circadian Rhythms in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Recent Findings and Recommendations for Future Research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Circadian rhythms are a topic of growing interest in mental health, particularly in obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, the consistency of this link has not been carefully examined. Thus, the present review integrates findings from the past 5 years in order to determine the strength of such a relationship and identify areas for clarification and extension. RECENT FINDINGS: Findings revealed inconsistent evidence for a link between circadian rhythms and OCD. Chronotype is unrelated to OCD symptoms in adolescents but predicts OCD symptoms in adults. Results on delayed sle

Is Idiopathic Hypersomnia a Circadian Rhythm Disorder?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The pathophysiology of idiopathic hypersomnia remains unclear, but some of its clinical features suggest the possibility of circadian dysfunction. This review will provide an overview of recent studies of circadian biology that have begun to elucidate the potential role of circadian rhythm dysfunction in idiopathic hypersomnia. RECENT FINDINGS: Clinically, people with idiopathic hypersomnia tend to have both a late chronotype and prominent sleep inertia or sleep drunkenness. Melatonin and cortisol profiles in people with IH confirm this tendency toward phase delay. More rec

Association of daytime sleepiness and the morningness/eveningness dimension in young adult subjects in Brazil.

Sleepiness is a major public health problem associated with motor vehicle crashes, occupational accidents, decreased productivity, and interpersonal problems. It can be influenced by many factors, including the individual's circadian rhythm. The objective of this study is to assess the correlation between the morningness/eveningness dimension and daytime sleepiness in medical school students. This is a cross-sectional study; 310 subjects (123 women and 187 men, M age 20.5 +/- 1.9 yr.) completed a questionnaire on use of drugs, diagnostic diseases, sleeping habits, the Morningness/Eveningness Q

Circadian rhythm entrainment factors and premenstrual syndrome: a cross-sectional study of the roles of light exposure, exercise, and meal timing.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition affecting women, involving physical and emotional symptoms. Since circadian rhythms may be disrupted during the premenstrual phase, regulating them could alleviate PMS. The purpose of this study was to determine how lifestyle factors (light exposure, exercise, and food intake) related to circadian rhythm entrainment contribute to PMS severity based on chronotype. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Japanese women aged 20–49 years. PMS severity was assessed using the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire. Lifestyle habits re

Afternoon exercise was associated with greater fat loss than morning exercise in overweight/obese adults: an exploratory study of PER3 rs228697 genotype matching.

OBJECTIVE: Exercise timing may influence metabolic responses and body composition, but the extent to which circadian genetic variation contributes remains unclear. The PER3 rs228697 polymorphism has been linked to chronotype-related traits, although its relevance to exercise timing remains uncertain. This exploratory study examined whether body-composition responses to morning versus afternoon moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) differed according to PER3 rs228697 genotype in overweight/obese university students. METHODS: In this 8-week supervised intervention, 31 overweight/obese u

Circadian rhythms regulate refractive development across species.

Myopia is a rapidly escalating global public health challenge, yet the biological mechanisms linking modern lifestyles to abnormal eye growth remain unclear. Circadian rhythms have been implicated in refractive development, but causal evidence is limited. Here, we integrate population-scale human data with an experimental animal model to determine whether circadian misalignment contributes to myopia. In >265,000 individuals from the Estonian and UK Biobanks, late chronotype was consistently associated with myopia. To assess causality, we experimentally disrupted the alignment between behaviour

The effects of chronobiological rhythms on glucose metabolism in gestational diabetes: A systematic review.

This systematic review aims to examine the effects of chronobiological rhythms on glucose metabolism during pregnancy. In parallel with the increasing prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), chronobiological factors such as sleep duration, circadian rhythm disturbances, and meal timing are evaluated for their impact on glucose metabolism. In accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, studies published between 2010 and 2025 were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Articles meeting eligibility criteria were included, and data analysis was performed. A total of e

Sleep Health and White Matter Integrity in the UK Biobank.

Many people experience impaired sleep health, yet knowledge about its neurobiological correlates is limited. As previous studies have found associations between white matter integrity and several sleep traits, white matter integrity could be causally implicated in poor sleep health. However, these studies were often limited by small sample sizes. In this study, we examine associations between multiple indices of white matter integrity and sleep health in 29,114 UK Biobank participants. Late chronotype, daytime sleepiness, insomnia symptoms and, most extensively, long sleep duration were indepe

Childhood Sleep Functioning as a Developmental Precursor of Adolescent Adjustment Problems.

Sleep has been linked to adjustment difficulties in both children and adolescents; yet little is known about the long-term impact of childhood sleep on subsequent development. This study tested whether childhood sleep problems, sleep quantity, and chronotype predicted internalizing and externalizing problems during adolescence. Latent Growth Modeling using the Czech portion of the European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (N = 4393) was utilized to test the developmental trajectories of sleep characteristics (from 1.5 to 7 years) as predictors of adjustment problems trajectories (

Sleeping green: an Italian survey for the assessment of the relationship between sleep and vegetarian diet.

PURPOSE: Plant-based diets are beneficial for health and sleep. Nevertheless, results on the relationship between entirely vegetarian (veg) diets and sleep are scarce and heterogeneous, and many relevant variables are rarely considered. We hypothesize that veg diets may be differently related to several sleep measures considering the role of other intervening factors. METHODS: We used an online survey to collect self-reported data about dietary patterns, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, sleepiness, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) risk, and sleep-related movement disorders.
