Pharmacy communication to adolescents and their physicians regarding access to emergency contraception.

OBJECTIVE: Emergency contraception (EC) is an effective pregnancy prevention strategy. EC is available without a prescription to those aged 17 years or older. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of information provided to adolescents and their physicians when they telephone pharmacies to inquire about EC. METHODS: By using standardized scripts, female callers telephoned 943 pharmacies in 5 US cities posing as 17-year-old adolescents or as physicians calling on behalf of their 17-year-old patients. McNemar tests were used to compare outcomes between adolescent and physician

Pregnancy loss: spontaneous and induced abortions among young women in Lusaka, Zambia.

An estimated 60% of all adolescent pregnancies in low-income countries are unintended. The present study was carried out at the university hospital in Lusaka, Zambia over a four-month period in 2005. The aim was to explore experiences of pregnancy loss and to ascertain the girl's contraceptive knowledge and use and their partner's involvement in the pregnancy/abortion. Eighty-seven girls aged 13-19 years admitted to hospital for incomplete abortions were interviewed. Of these girls, 53 (61%) had had a spontaneous abortion and 34 (39%) had undergone an unsafe induced abortion. Significantly mor

Understanding factors influencing request for a repeat termination of pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To assess factors influencing request for a termination of pregnancy (TOP). DESIGN: A questionnaire based, prospective study of 150 women requesting a TOP. This questionnaire contained a modified version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). SUBJECTS: Of the 150 women requesting a TOP, 100 were seeking a TOP for the first time and the remaining 50 had at least one TOP in the past. RESULTS: Forty-five percent of women requesting termination of the first pregnancy were under the age of 20, 62% earned less than 10,000 Pounds per year and 12% did not use any form of con

Provision of emergency contraceptive pills to spermicide users in ghana.

This study evaluated the effect of two approaches to provision of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) on ECP use and unprotected intercourse among women relying on spermicides for contraception. The study enrolled 211 women at 4 family planning clinics in Ghana. At two clinics, participants were advised to return to the clinic within 3 days after unprotected intercourse to obtain ECPs. At the other two clinics, participants were given ECPs to take home for use if unprotected intercourse occurred. All participants were asked to maintain daily diaries for 8 weeks to record information on sexual

Post-coital antifertility activity of the seeds of Coriandrum sativum in rats.

Effect of the aqueous extract of fresh coriander (Coriandrum sativum) seeds has been studied on female fertility in rats. Parameters included effects on oestrus cycle, implantation, foetal loss, abortion, teratogenicity and serum progesterone levels on days 5, 12 and 20 of the pregnancy. The extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg orally produced a dose-dependent significant anti-implantation effect, but failed to produce complete infertility. Treatment of animals during day-8 to day-12 and day-12 to day-20 of the pregnancy did not produce any significant abortifacient activity. There was no sig

Emergency contraception and risk habits in a university population.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to determine the self-reported prevalence of use of emergency contraception (EC), identify factors associated with EC use, and measure the prevalence in university students of pregnancy and abortion among users and non-users of EC. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study of university students using a self-administered questionnaire was carried out in 2016. The main dependent variable was EC use at any time. Independent variables included sociodemographic factors and factors related to harmful habits and sexual behaviour. RESULTS: The study sample con

Can we identify women at risk of pregnancy despite using emergency contraception? Data from randomized trials of ulipristal acetate and levonorgestrel.

BACKGROUND: Emergency contraception (EC) does not always work. Clinicians should be aware of potential risk factors for EC failure. STUDY DESIGN: Data from a meta-analysis of two randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of ulipristal acetate (UPA) with levonorgestrel were analyzed to identify factors associated with EC failure. RESULTS: The risk of pregnancy was more than threefold greater for obese women compared with women with normal body mass index (odds ratio (OR), 3.60; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.96-6.53; p<.0001), whichever EC was taken. However, for obese women, the r

Perception of university students in Ghana about emergency contraception.

Emergency contraception (EC) refers to methods that women can use to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse, method failure, or incorrect use. There is growing worldwide acceptance and promotion of EC as a measure to reduce the level of unwanted pregnancies and, hence, unsafe abortions. The potential effect of EC in this regard could be most evident in sub-Saharan Africa. In Ghana, the Ministry of Health has since 1996 included EC in its reproductive health service policy and standards. The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana is the only agency involved in the promotion of

Double dosing ulipristal acetate emergency contraception for individuals with obesity: a randomised crossover trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether increasing the dose of ulipristal acetate (UPA)-containing emergency contraception (EC) improves pharmacodynamic outcomes in individuals with obesity. STUDY DESIGN: We enrolled healthy, regularly-cycling, confirmed ovulatory, reproductive-age individuals with body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 and weight >80 kg in a randomised crossover study. We monitored participants with transvaginal ultrasound and blood sampling for progesterone, luteinising hormone (LH), and estradiol every other day until a dominant follicle measuring >15 mm was visualised. Abortion and student health services expanding the conversation with student perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: College students are known to experience unintended pregnancy and seek abortions. However, few student health centers currently offer abortion services. In this exploratory study, we aimed to expand understanding of student perspectives regarding on-campus abortion services. STUDY DESIGN: We invited UC Davis students to complete an anonymous web-based survey using 16 campus listservs and in-person recruitment. We elicited student knowledge of and opinions about on-campus Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) with 29 questions. RESULTS: The 502 participating students primar

Emergency contraceptive pills: a review of the recent literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to inform the reader of new information published since early 2003 about emergency contraception, with a particular focus on issues of access. RECENT FINDINGS: Research continues to document low but increasing levels of knowledge about emergency contraception, increasing use, and more positive attitudes towards emergency contraception by both patients and healthcare providers. Additional information is available about efficacy and mechanisms of action. More reports of side-effects have been published, as have studies relating to the impact of e

Sexual partners and use of emergency contraception.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the role of male sexual partners and relationships in determining whether women seek emergency contraception (EC) when needed. STUDY DESIGN: Data on EC use from a clinic-based sample of sexually active women, aged 15 to 30 years, in the San Francisco Bay area (n=497) were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Results show that factors measuring power dynamics, such as male dominant decision making (odds ratio [OR]=4.1, P=.035) and pressure for sex (OR=2.7, P=.006), as well as a strong desire to avoid pregnancy on the part of the

Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis infection is indicated for women under 30 using emergency contraception.

A total of 838 women attending a large family planning clinic in Scotland for emergency contraception were offered screening for Chlamydia trachomatis infection. 569 were screened using ligase chain reaction test in first void urine at the time of presenting for emergency contraception and were retested 1 or 2 weeks later. Women aged under 20 and over 30 years were significantly more likely to decline to be tested than women aged 20 to 30. The prevalence of chlamydia was 7.6% in woman aged 24 or less, 5.3% in women aged 25 to 29, and 1.2% in women aged 30 or more. Only two women (< 1%) who tes

Prevention of pregnancy resulting from rape: a neglected preventive health measure.

Abstract: Pregnancy following rape is a continuing and significant public health issue. We estimate that the 333,000 sexual assaults and rapes reported in 1998, along with many more unreported, were responsible for 25,000 pregnancies. Potentially, as many as 22,000 such pregnancies could be prevented if all women who were raped received prompt medical services, and if not already protected against pregnancy, were provided with emergency contraceptive treatment.

Hormonal anti-implantation agents: antiprogestins.

Oestrogens and progestogens separately or in combination are able to prevent implantation with high efficiency, thus acting as interceptive agents. Current interceptive medical regimens include high-dose oestrogens, the association of oestrogens with progestogens or progestogens alone. Compounds with antiprogesterone properties, such as RU 486 (mifepristone) or ZK 98734 (lilopristone), also exhibit a strong interceptive action which, as shown in animal models, is proportional to the dose and the day(s) of administration. Recent clinical studies show that RU 486 can be used successfully for pos
