Functional Properties of Brosimum alicastrum Seed Flour Gels: Impact of Temperature, Concentration, and Additives on Rheology, Viscoelasticity, and Texture.

Ramón seed flour (RSF), obtained from the drought- and hurricane-resistant Brosimum alicastrum, is a promising sustainable ingredient with high productivity and a favorable nutritional profile, but its functional properties remain poorly understood. This study characterized the rheological, viscoelastic, and textural behavior of RSF gels prepared at 7.7, 9, or 11% (w/w), heated at 80, 90, or 100 °C, and formulated with 2% salt, 5% sugar, or no additive. Rheological and viscoelastic properties were measured using a controlled-stress rheometer, and textural properties were evaluated using a sing

A rigid-flexible locust bean gum/acrylic acid hydrogel resists soil confinement for enhanced water retention.

Water scarcity imposes a major constraint on agricultural systems, posing a direct threat to global food security and ecological balance. Superabsorbent hydrogels can significantly improve soil water holding capacity, thereby enabling the soil to effectively resist drought and sustain normal crop growth. However, the physical stress environment in soil severely compromises the water absorption and swelling capacity, limiting their agricultural application. To address this challenge, a locust bean gum/acrylic acid hydrogel (LAN) that combines a rigid sodium acrylate covalent network with a flex

Acute sensitivity of the killifish Nothobranchius furzeri to a combination of temperature and reference toxicants (cadmium, chlorpyrifos and 3,4-dichloroaniline).

Aquatic organisms of inland waters are often subjected to a combination of stressors. Yet, few experiments assess mixed stress effects beyond a select group of standard model organisms. We studied the joint toxicity of reference toxicants and increased temperature on the turquoise killifish, Nothobranchius furzeri, a promising model for ecotoxicological research due to the species' short life cycle and the production of drought-resistant eggs. The acute sensitivity of the larval stage (2dph) to three compounds (cadmium, 3,4-dichloroaniline and chlorpyrifos) was tested in combination with a tem

Genome-wide analysis of the mango YUCCA family and overexpression of MiYUCCA10A/B confers early flowering and stress tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis and tomato.

Auxin is a fundamental phytohormone that orchestrates developmental processes in plants. Flavin monooxygenase (YUCCA) serves as the rate-limiting enzyme in the indole-3-pyruvic acid pathway (IPA) pathway, and its main function is to convert IPA into IAA. In this study, 12 members of the MiYUCCA gene family were mined and identified from the genomic data of mango (Mangifera indica). Phylogenetic tree analysis classified mango YUCCA into five categories. Cis-elements analysis of the promoter indicated that the promoter region contained a large number of hormone response elements and abiotic elem

Enhanced net primary productivity across Inner Mongolian grasslands despite diverging stability under climate perturbations.

BACKGROUND: Understanding ecosystems functioning under frequent climatic perturbations is central to predicting ecosystem stability. While studies suggest that stable ecosystems can buffer against climate extremes, there is no agreement on whether this stability arises from their resistance (ability to absorb shock) to perturbations, resilience (capacity to recover) towards disturbances, or a combination of both. Using annual net primary productivity (NPP) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and aridity index (AI), we investigated the (i) spatiotemporal changes of NP

Revealing the Patterns and Key Genes of Heat-Stress Response in Quinoa Through Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses.

Quinoa is a high-nutrition crop originating from the Andes Mountains that is tolerant to cold, drought and salt. However, the mechanism of the high-temperature response in quinoa is still unclear. In this study, quinoa line YL-6 was used to analyze the changes in photosynthetic parameters, physiological parameters and the transcriptome after 0, 3, 12 and 24 h of heat stress. Our results showed that photosynthetic parameters, including the maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), steady-state effective quantum yield (ΦPSII_Lss), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ_Lss), and photochemical quenching c

Efficient Embryogenic Callus Induction and Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation of the Elite Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) Variety Jingu51.

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is an important food crop worldwide and serves as a model for studying C4 photosynthesis and drought resistance. However, its application in functional genomics and molecular breeding has been severely constrained by the absence of a reliable genetic transformation system. In this study, 66 varieties were systematically evaluated for embryogenic callus induction capacity, with rates ranging from 0 to 70.22%. Among these, five varieties exhibited high embryogenic potential (>50%). Jingu51, an elite cultivated variety in northern China, was selected as the tra

Focus on DnaJ protein research from Arabidopsis to crop improvement.

DnaJ proteins (Hsp40s) are essential components of the cellular proteostasis network, functioning as molecular co-chaperones that regulate protein folding, stability, and stress-responsive homeostasis in plants. Beyond their classical role as Hsp70 partners, accumulating evidence demonstrates that DnaJ proteins participate in diverse biological processes by integrating proteostasis with hormonal, developmental, and defense signaling pathways. This review synthesizes recent advances in the structural diversity, evolutionary distribution, and functional specialization of DnaJ proteins across mod

Ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis: Advancing bacterial genetics for sustainable agriculture.

Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) is a strong alkylating agent commonly used to induce random point mutations, particularly G: C to A: T transitions, by ethylating guanine bases in DNA. Its mutagenic properties, which stem from the transfer of ethyl groups to nucleophilic sites within cells, allow for the creation of various mutant libraries, aiding research in bacterial physiology, metabolism, and antibiotic resistance. This review briefly examines the mechanisms behind EMS mutagenesis and its applications in both forward and reverse genetics. In forward genetics, mutants generated by EMS with alt

Stable isotope analyses (δ15N, δ34S, δ13C) locate early rye cultivation in northern Europe within diverse manuring practices.

Stable isotopes provide insights into the early history of rye cultivation from the Migration period to the late Medieval period (fourth to fifteenth centuries CE). Manuring shows high intensity and diversity throughout. Rye as an undemanding crop resistant to drought was cultivated on nutrient-poor sandy soils to a limited extent only. It became a dominant crop owing to its integration into an existing labour-intensive manuring system mainly based on stable dung. Modern experiments demonstrate that the effect of manuring on cereal δ15N is strongly mediated by the soil substrate. Conspicuously

Bacillus and Streptomyces were selected as broad-spectrum antagonists against soilborne pathogens from arid areas in Egypt.

Plant protection via disease-suppressive bacteria in desert farming requires specific biological control agents (BCAs) adapted to the unique arid conditions. We performed an ecological study of below-ground communities in desert farm soil and untreated desert soil, and based on these findings, selected antagonists were hierarchically evaluated. In contrast to the highly specific 16S rRNA fingerprints of bacterial communities in soil and cultivated medicinal plants, internal transcribed spacer profiles of fungal communities were less discriminative and mainly characterised by potential pathogen

GhWRKY15, a member of the WRKY transcription factor family identified from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), is involved in disease resistance and plant development.

BACKGROUND: As a large family of regulatory proteins, WRKY transcription factors play essential roles in the processes of adaptation to diverse environmental stresses and plant growth and development. Although several studies have investigated the role of WRKY transcription factors during these processes, the mechanisms underlying the function of WRKY members need to be further explored, and research focusing on the WRKY family in cotton crops is extremely limited. RESULTS: In the present study, a gene encoding a putative WRKY family member, GhWRKY15, was isolated from cotton. GhWRKY15 is pre

HaLAC15, a laccase gene from Haloxylon ammodendron, enhances plant tolerance to pollutants via lignification and substrate degradation.

Haloxylon ammodendron, a drought- and salt-tolerant desert shrub, is a valuable plant resource in arid ecosystems. Laccase plays a crucial role in lignin biosynthesis and adaptation of plants to abiotic stress, including heavy metals and organic pollutants; however, the specific functions of laccase genes in the highly stress-tolerant H. ammodendron remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study focused on a novel laccase gene, HaLAC15, cloned from H. ammodendron, to investigate its role in mitigating the effects of copper (CuSO4), phenolic acids (sinapic acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid),

Transcriptome Profiling of Stem-Differentiating Xylem in Response to Abiotic Stresses Based on Hybrid Sequencing in Cunninghamia lanceolata.

Cunninghamia lanceolata (C. lanceolata) belongs to Gymnospermae, which are fast-growing and have desirable wood properties. However, C. lanceolata's stress resistance is little understood. To unravel the physiological and molecular regulation mechanisms under environmental stresses in the typical gymnosperm species of C. lanceolata, three-year-old plants were exposed to simulated drought stress (polyethylene glycol 8000), salicylic acid, and cold treatment at 4 °C for 8 h, 32 h, and 56 h, respectively. Regarding the physiological traits, we observed a decreased protein content and increased pe

A proximal upstream sequence controls tissue-specific expression of Lem2, a salicylate-inducible barley lectin-like gene.

The lemma and palea (lemma/palea), which form the husk of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds, constitutively express high levels of defense-related genes, relative to leaves [Abebe et al. (2004) Crop Sci 44:942-950]. One of these genes, Lem2, is expressed mainly in the lemma/palea and coleoptile and is strongly upregulated by salicylic acid (SA) and its functional analog 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid . Induction by SA was rapid, occurring within 4 h of treatment. However, Lem2 is not responsive to methyl jasmonate (MeJA) or wounding and is downregulated by drought, dehydration, and abscisic aci

Single-nucleus RNA sequencing reveals a spatiotemporal pattern of H2S signaling in Chinese cabbage.

Plants rely on gasotransmitters like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to coordinate stress adaptation, yet how H2S orchestrates spatiotemporal responses across cell types remains unknown. Here, we generated a high-resolution single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) atlas of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) leaves, capturing the dynamic transcriptional response to H2S over the course of 24 h. We identified 18 transcriptionally distinct clusters corresponding to nine major leaf cell types. H2S induces globally coordinated transcriptional reprogramming, prominently featuring the broad ac

Uptake via the leaf surface allows plants to perceive volatiles with closed stomata.

Plants can detect threats by perceiving airborne chemical signals, but how these volatiles are taken up by the leaves is not well understood. Stomata are generally considered the major uptake pathway. However, as stomata close at night or during drought, this may severely limit the capacity of plants to sense volatiles. Using the crassulacean Kalanchoë laxiflora, which possesses crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) leaves that open their stomata at night and C3 leaves that open their stomata during the day, we uncover that the leaf surface functions as an alternative volatile uptake pathway that
