Stability analysis of a time-delayed SIQR epidemic model with nonlinear transmission and control parameters.

We introduce an SIQR epidemic model that integrates nonlinear transmission and two discrete time delays corresponding to incubation and treatment durations. The model seeks to encapsulate essential dynamical characteristics of epidemic advancement while being suitable for thorough stability examination. The local asymptotic stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria is examined by Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals and delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which mitigate conservatism in the established stability constraints compared to time-invariant criteria. A Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) forecasting model to predict the epidemic trends of scrub typhus in China.

Scrub typhus is a deadly infectious disease that is frequently underdiagnosed. Forecasting the emergence of infectious diseases using epidemiological models has emerged as a crucial instrument for comprehending the dynamics of their occurrence. This research aimed to investigate epidemic traits and create a predictive model for scrub typhus in mainland China, employing the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) time series method. Monthly records of scrub typhus cases were gathered from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, covering the timeframe from 2006 to

Compartmental Modeling of Vitamin A Stable Isotope Data from Milk or Plasma Provides Comparable Predictions of Vitamin A Stores in Theoretical Lactating Women.

BACKGROUND: Previous compartmental models describing and quantifying whole-body vitamin A (VA) metabolism have been developed from plasma retinol kinetic data after human subjects ingest stable isotope-labeled VA. For humans, models based on data obtained from other sampling sites (e.g., excreta or milk) have not been proposed. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to determine whether comparable model predictions of VA total body stores (TBS) in theoretical lactating women were obtained using tracer data from only retinol in plasma or VA in milk. METHODS: We used Simulation, Analysis and Modeling s

Development of a Compartmental Model for Studying Vitamin A Kinetics and Status in Theoretical Lactating Women.

BACKGROUND: Low vitamin A status and suboptimal milk vitamin A concentrations are problems in many populations worldwide. However, limited research has been done on whole-body vitamin A kinetics in women of reproductive age, especially during lactation. OBJECTIVES: Goals were to develop compartmental models describing retinol kinetics in theoretical nonlactating (NL) and lactating (L) women and to determine whether the retinol isotope dilution (RID) method accurately predicted vitamin A total body stores (TBS) in the groups and individuals. METHODS: We adapted 12 previously-used theoretical

Inferring the Ecological Niche of Toxoplasma gondii and Bartonella spp. in Wild Felids.

Traditional epidemiological studies of disease in animal populations often focus on directly transmitted pathogens. One reason pathogens with complex lifecycles are understudied could be due to challenges associated with detection in vectors and the environment. Ecological niche modeling (ENM) is a methodological approach that overcomes some of the detection challenges often seen with vector or environmentally dependent pathogens. We test this approach using a unique dataset of two pathogens in wild felids across North America: Toxoplasma gondii and Bartonella spp. in bobcats (Lynx rufus) and

Improving outbreak forecasts through model augmentation.

Accurate forecasts of disease outbreaks are critical for effective public health responses, management of healthcare surge capacity, and communication of public risk. There are a growing number of powerful forecasting methods that fall into two broad categories-empirical models that extrapolate from historical data, and mechanistic models based on fixed epidemiological assumptions. However, these methods often underperform precisely when reliable predictions are most urgently needed-during periods of rapid epidemic escalation. Here, we introduce epimodulation, a hybrid approach that integrates

Cannabis- and Substance-Related Carcinogenesis in Europe: A Lagged Causal Inferential Panel Regression Study.

Recent European data facilitate an epidemiological investigation of the controversial cannabis-cancer relationship. Of particular concern were prior findings associating high-dose cannabis use with reproductive problems and potential genetic impacts. Cancer incidence data age-standardised to the world population was obtained from the European Cancer Information System 2000-2020 and many European national cancer registries. Drug use data were obtained from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. Alcohol and tobacco consumption was sourced from the WHO. Median household inco

Traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer's disease related neurodegenerative diseases: Insights from animal models.

Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases (ADRD) represent a major global public health challenge, with their disease mechanisms remain largely unknown, and few treatments are available. Increasing epidemiological evidence underscores the critical role of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the initiation and progression of ADRD, suggesting shared pathogenic mechanisms between these conditions. While there are still lack of perfect AD models in the field, TBI models may serve as useful and alternative platforms for investigating ADRD. In this review we delineate the definition and

Particulate air pollution and asthma: a review of epidemiological and biological studies.

The link between exposure to air pollution and exacerbation of asthma symptoms has been investigated by epidemiological study and by direct biological experimentation. In asthmatics, epidemiological studies generally show a positive correlation between the particulate fraction of air pollution and increased morbidity, although roles for other co-pollutants (for example, ozone) are implicated as well. Direct experimentation using air pollutants, especially particles, to investigate their effects on humans or on animal models of asthma provides corroboration of the epidemiology and has begun to

Determinants of variation in epidemiological parameters for African Swine Fever virus.

African Swine Fever (ASF) is an infectious reportable disease of swine that can have devastating consequences for pork producers and consumers. ASF virus can persist in either domestic or wild swine through several epidemiological cycles. This has led to a wide variety of epidemiological traits, making it challenging to plan effective surveillance and mitigation strategies. Here, we compile and analyze data from experimental infections of ASF virus variants from genotype II that have been reported in peer-reviewed publications. We provide descriptive summaries of the distributions of epidemiol

Integrated disease model considering mutation-induced infection waves with COVID-19 cases.

COVID-19, an unprecedented global pandemic, has caused successive waves that pose unique challenges to public health and epidemiological research. Traditional Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) models often struggle to capture these complex dynamics, especially given that the virus has spawned multiple sub-variants. To tackle these challenges, we adopt an empirical modeling approach by integrating real-world data from Our World in Data (daily confirmed COVID-19 cases) and GISAID (variant prevalence) into a newly proposed integrated model. Specifically, we sum multiple sigmoidal (logistic) cu

Ethnic inequities in mathematical models for respiratory infectious disease: A systematic review.

COVID-19 was the most recent pandemic to highlight profound ethnic inequities. However, most mathematical epidemiological models do not adequately represent these inequities, limiting the potential for such models to inform equitable public health responses and interventions. This systematic review identifies mathematical models of infectious respiratory disease transmission that report results by ethnic group and surveys the different mathematical modelling approaches used to attempt to capture ethnicity-related outcomes. Only 28 studies met the inclusion criteria, which is rare relative to t

Multiple Disease-Free Equilibria: Toward a Vector Structure of R 0.

Traditional epidemiological models rely on the basic reproductive number, R 0 , as a single threshold quantity to determine whether a disease will persist or die out. However, increased structural complexity in models can lead to the emergence of multiple disease-free equilibria (DFEs). To illustrate this dynamic diversity, we analyze a compartmental model based on the Health Belief Model, where risk perception, social imitation, and behavioral fatigue among susceptible individuals generate the coexistence of multiple DFEs. This case study exposes the limitations of a single scalar threshold

malariasimple: An R package for fast simulations of malaria transmission.

Process-based malaria transmission models are important tools for evaluating intervention strategies, quantifying uncertainty, and informing malaria control policy. Individual-based models such as malariasimulation are computationally demanding, which limits their practicality for applications that require large numbers of simulation runs. In this paper we present malariasimple, a simplified, compartmental model implemented as an R package which approximates the epidemiological structure and parameter definitions of malariasimulation while operating at a fraction of the computational cost. Spatio-temporal modelling of dengue counts in the Central Valley of Costa Rica.

This study analyses 18 years of weekly reported dengue cases (January 2002-December 2020; 988 weeks) from Costa Rica's Central Valley to examine seasonal and multi-year patterns. To model the spatio-temporal dynamics of dengue, we employ three statistical approaches for case counts: the spatial hurdle integer-valued generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (INGARCH) model, the spatial zero-inflated generalized Poisson (ZIGP)-INGARCH model, and the endemic-epidemic (EE) model. Covariates include rainfall and maximum temperature or alternatively seasonal Fourier terms to represe

Investigation the epidemiological transition of ebola virus under contagious population with sustainable extended fractional operator.

The Ebola outbreak represents one of the most severe global health crises in recent history. In this study, we develop and analyze a new fractional-order mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of the Ebola virus, incorporating an extended Atangana-Baleanu Caputo fractional operator. The model's foundational properties-such as existence, uniqueness, positivity, and well-posedness of solutions are established through fixed point theorems. A detailed investigation of the basic reproduction number is carried out, accompanied by a sensitivity analysis to highlight influential parameters a

[A study of confounding effect control based on residual strategy with multivariate random forest analysis].

By using generalized estimating equation, random intercept model, random coefficients model, and generalized linear model respectively, this study obtained residuals for predictors and outcomes as new predictors and outcomes for multivariate random forest (MRF) analysis. Simulation experiments were conducted to compare the performance of these methods in confounding adjustment under scenarios with varying outcome correlations, causal effect magnitudes, numbers of confounding factors, and sample sizes. United Kingdom Biobank data were used for further validation. Simulation results showed that

Mathematical analysis and prediction of future outbreak of dengue on time-varying contact rate using machine learning approach.

This article introduces a novel mathematical model analyzing the dynamics of Dengue in the recent past, specifically focusing on the 2023 outbreak of this disease. The model explores the patterns and behaviors of dengue fever in Bangladesh. Incorporating a sinusoidal function reveals significant mid-May to Late October outbreak predictions, aligning with the government's exposed data in our simulation. For different amplitudes (A) within a sequence of values (A = 0.1 to 0.5), the highest number of infected mosquitoes occurs in July. However, simulations project that when βM = 0.5 and A = 0.1,

Gallation and B-Ring Dihydroxylation Increase Green Tea Catechin Residence Time in Plasma by Differentially Affecting Tissue-Specific Trafficking: Compartmental Model of Catechin Kinetics in Healthy Adults.

Catechins in green tea extract (GTE) (epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG)) vary in bioactivity. We developed a physiologically relevant mathematical model of catechin metabolism to test the hypothesis that fractional catabolic rates of catechins would be differentially affected by their structural attributes. Pharmacokinetic data of plasma and urine catechin concentrations were used from healthy adults (n = 19) who ingested confections containing 0.5 g GTE (290 mg EGCG, 87 mg EGC, 39 mg EC, 28 mg ECG).
