The objective of this study was to compare the clinical results of unstable distal radius fractures treated with ORIF with plate and screws compared to EF. Patients with unstable distal radius fractures treated with ORIF or EF from January 2005 to December 2010 were reviewed in terms of the Modified Mayo Wrist Score, range of motion, pain, grip strength, and radiologic parameters. Results showed that there was no difference in the Modified Mayo Wrist Score between ORIF (17 patients) and EF (11 patients) (p = 0.07). The ORIF group had better wrist flexion, wrist extension, pronation and supinat

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular fractures of the fingers are common problems to emergency physicians and hand surgeons. Inappropriate management of these injuries may result in chronic pain, stiffness, deformity, or post traumatic arthritis. Ideal treatment necessitates the restoration of a stable and congruent joint that will allow early mobilization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of intra-articular fracture of the fingers by mini external fixator combined with limited internal fixation.
METHODS: From May 2005 to May 2007, a total of 26 patients with intra-articular fr

The biomechanical stability of an internal fixation system that uses low-profile modular implants to stabilize individual fracture components was studied in a validated cadaver fracture model that incorporated physiologic muscle forces and wrist motion. Fragment-specific fixation with immediate range of motion was compared with static augmented external fixation in simulated, unstable 3- and 4-part intra-articular distal radius fractures (n = 20). Fixation was applied and specimens were loaded via their major wrist tendons. Because the wrist joint was not constrained in the internal fixation g

Burns combined with fractures are uncommon and become particularly challenging when the burn overlies the surgical corridor. We report a 51-year-old woman with an intra-articular distal radius fracture and an overlying deep volar ulnar wrist burn (deep partial-thickness to full-thickness) after jumping from a second floor during a house fire. A spanning external fixator was applied through unburned skin on the day of injury while the burn was managed conservatively by plastic surgeons. Ten days later, definitive fixation was performed through an intact dorsal approach with articular reduction,

PURPOSE: Both external fixation (ExFx) and open reduction and internal fixation(ORIF) were used to treat complex tibial plateau fractures, but it was not sure which one was better. So we did this meta-analysis to evaluate the outcomes of ExFx and ORIF in managing complex tibial plateau fractures.
METHODS: Articles published before August 5, 2016 were selected from PubMed, Cochrane library, and some other electronic database. Relevant journals were also searched manually with no language limited. Two independent reviewers searched and assessed the literature. A fixed effect model was initially

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular distal humerus fractures are relatively uncommon. Due to osteoporosis in elderly patients, stable fixation still remains a problem despite new implants providing angular stability.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The treatment of choice is open reduction and plate fixation requiring an extended approach with olecranon osteotomy often combined with additional postoperative immobilisation in a long arm cast. We describe a technique using closed reduction and percutaneous osteosynthesis with cannulated screws combined with external fixation. Morbidity due to surgical exposure a

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for high energy pilon fractures is controversial. Good clinical and functional results have been reported with traditional open reduction techniques and minimally invasive techniques utilizing external fixation (EF). The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate clinical, radiographic and functional outcomes following high-energy fractures of the tibial plafond.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2006, 62 patients who were diagnosed with 63 Type 43C pilon fractures were treated surgically by a single surgeon and retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-seven patients w

PURPOSE: Various external fixation systems for lower extremity long bone deformities have been used to various degrees of success, while newer mechanical lengthening nail (MLN) systems offer the potential for improved patient outcomes. Proponents of MLNs argue that they reduce the number of operations, infectious complications, and improve quality of life; however, the evidence to support these claims is scant. This systematic review aims to evaluate the optimal lengthening system for treating post-traumatic long bone deformity.
METHODS: The systematic review was conducted in accordance with

A new production method of spraying dextran-based polyurethane external splints is introduced in this paper. The main raw material components are polymethylene polyisocyanate (PAPI), mixed with surfactants, acetone, soluble starch, catalyst, and so on. The splint is used for temporary fixing after fracture, with small size, light weight, easy portability, fine air perviousness, completely transparent to the X-ray. It also needs a shorter fixed operating time. It can not only fix quickly and effectively the vertebral column and limbs, but also significantly shorten the time of pre-hospital care
