Forecasting tuberculosis through mechanistic learning of transmission dynamics: Insights from a case study in India.

Tuberculosis continues to pose a significant global health issue, with India facing the most considerable burden. We develop and calibrate an SEIR-type model to understand disease dynamics and perform sensitivity analysis to pinpoint crucial parameters. The basic reproduction number acts as the epidemic threshold, while backward bifurcation highlights the dangers of reinfection and superinfection. To enhance forecasting, we merge mechanistic modeling with deep learning techniques, utilizing feedforward, recurrent, and memory-based networks. Evaluated on TB case data from India, these hybrid mo

A hybrid machine learning model for pulmonary tuberculosis forecasting of Chongqing with adjacent-region data.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) remains a serious infectious disease and a major global public health problem. Accurate prediction of PTB epidemics is essential to support health authorities in developing effective prevention and control strategies. This study proposed a novel two-stage hybrid prediction model that integrates a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model and a support vector regression (SVR) model in parallel, followed in series by an extreme learning machine (ELM) optimized via the sparrow search algorithm. Furthermore, recognizing the notable spatial correl

A Molecular Signature of the Ubiquitin-Proteasome System for Forecasting Prognosis in Thyroid Carcinoma Patients.

BACKGROUND: The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is vital for protein quality control and its dysregulation is linked to diseases, including cancer. Targeting the UPS is becoming a promising approach in cancer therapy. However, the role of UPS modulation in thyroid carcinoma (THCA) remains to be fully elucidated. METHODS: Initially, we utilized data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database to employ weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) with LASSO regression to develop a prognostic model for core UPS genes implicated in THCA. Subsequently, we stratified the THCA training s

Development and external validation of temporal fusion transformer models for continuous intraoperative blood pressure forecasting.

BACKGROUND: During surgery, intraoperative hypotension is associated with postoperative morbidity and should therefore be avoided. Predicting the occurrence of hypotension in advance may allow timely interventions to prevent hypotension. Previous prediction models mostly use high-resolution waveform data, which is often not available. METHODS: We utilised a novel temporal fusion transformer (TFT) algorithm to predict intraoperative blood pressure trajectories 7 min in advance. We trained the model with low-resolution data (sampled every 15 s) from 73,009 patients who were undergoing general a

Blood donation projections using hierarchical time series forecasting: the case of Zimbabwe's national blood bank.

BACKGROUND: The discrepancy between blood supply and demand requires accurate forecasts of the blood supply at any blood bank. Accurate blood donation forecasting gives blood managers empirical evidence in blood inventory management. The study aims to model and predict blood donations in Zimbabwe using hierarchical time series. The modelling technique allows one to identify, say, a declining donor category, and in that way, the method offers feasible and targeted solutions for blood managers to work on. METHODS: The monthly blood donation data covering the period 2007 to 2018, collected from

Self vs. Other in Affective Forecasting: The Role of Psychological Distance and Decision from Experience.

This work tests self-other differences in the impact bias using the perspectives of psychological distance and decision from description vs. experience. Two studies compared the bias participants made for themselves and for others in a sequential gambling task. The task involved two identical gambles where the first gamble was mandatory and participants made decisions (accept or reject) for the second gamble. Planned decisions were made anticipating a gain or loss in the first gamble, and revised decisions were made following the actual experience of gain or loss. Study 1 compared decisions fo

A Coupled Statistical and Deterministic Model for Forecasting Climate-Driven Dengue Incidence in Selangor, Malaysia.

The mosquito-borne dengue virus remains a major public health concern in Malaysia. Despite various control efforts and measures introduced by the Malaysian Government to combat dengue, the increasing trend of dengue cases persists and shows no sign of decreasing. Currently, early detection and vector control are the main methods employed to curb dengue outbreaks. In this study, a coupled model consisting of the statistical ARIMAX model and the deterministic SI-SIR model was developed and validated using the weekly reported dengue data from year 2014 to 2019 for Selangor, Malaysia. Forecasting for regulatory credit loss derived from the COVID-19 pandemic: A machine learning approach.

The economic onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic has compromised the risk management of financial institutions. The consequences related to such an unprecedented situation are difficult to foresee with certainty using traditional methods. The regulatory credit loss attached to defaulted mortgages, so-called expected loss best estimate (ELBE), is forecasted using a machine learning technique. The projection of two ELBEs for 2022 and their comparison are presented. One accounts for the outbreak's impact, and the other presumes the nonexistence of the pandemic. Then, it is concluded that the refer

Forecasting Hepatocellular Carcinoma Mortality using a Weighted Regression Model to Estimate Cohort Effects in Taiwan.

To eliminate the influence of age and period in age cycle contingency table data, a multistage method was adopted to evaluate the cohort effect. The most general primary malignant tumor of the liver is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is associated with liver cirrhosis with alcohol and viral etiologies. In epidemiology, long-term trends in HCC mortality were delineated (or forecasted) by using an age-period-cohort (APC) model. The HCC deaths were determined for each cohort with its weighted influence. The confidence interval (CI) of the weighted mean is fairly narrow (compared to the equall

Developing a forecasting model for cholera incidence in Dhaka megacity through time series climate data.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease spread by lack of hygiene and contaminated water, is a major public health risk in many countries. As cholera is triggered by environmental conditions influenced by climatic variables, establishing a correlation between cholera incidence and climatic variables would provide an opportunity to develop a cholera forecasting model. Considering the auto-regressive nature and the seasonal behavioral patterns of cholera, a seasonal-auto-regressive-integrated-moving-average (SARIMA) model was used for time-series analysis during 2000-2013. As both rainfall (r = 0.43
