Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils against pathogens often related to cattle endometritis.

INTRODUCTION: Endometritis is a condition marked by inflammation of the endometrium that affects dairy cows from 21 days after parturition, causing damage to herd fertility and economic losses on farms. The use of active compounds obtained from plant sources has gained importance as disease treatment agents in farm animals due to the high resistance rates currently observed against traditional antibiotics commonly used. The study was carried out to examine the chemical composition and to investigate the antibacterial activity of rosemary, cinnamon, cloves, eucalyptus, lemon, oregano and thyme

Metagenomic sequencing sheds light on microbes putatively associated with pneumonia-related fatalities of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

With emerging infectious disease outbreaks in human, domestic and wild animal populations on the rise, improvements in pathogen characterization and surveillance are paramount for the protection of human and animal health, as well as the conservation of ecologically and economically important wildlife. Genomics offers a range of suitable tools to meet these goals, with metagenomic sequencing facilitating the characterization of whole microbial communities associated with emerging and endemic disease outbreaks. Here, we use metagenomic sequencing in a case-control study to identify microbes in

First molecular detection of bovine gammaherpesvirus type 4 in dairy cows of Iran and its possible role in endometritis.

A remarkable percentage of cows in industrialized dairy farms can be affected by uterine diseases including endometritis. Different viral and bacterial agents are causing endometritis in dairy cows including Trueperella pyogenes, and bovine alphaherpesvirus 1. Also, bovine gammaherpesvirus type 4 (BoGHV-4) is responsible for different reproductive disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the role of BoGHV-4 in histopathological and cytological changes of post-partum uterine diseases and its relation to bacterial co-infection. Forty-seven uteri were collected from Holstein dairy cows a

A Lemierre-like syndrome caused by Staphylococcus aureus: an emerging disease.

Despite its clear definition, Lemierre's syndrome is frequently used to describe any septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein. We report a Lemierre-like syndrome caused by Staphylococcus aureus without an oropharyngeal infection and present a systematic synthesis of reported cases to date of Lemierre-like syndrome caused by S. aureus. In addition to our case, 24 cases were found. In contrast to the classical picture, S. aureus is associated with an oropharyngeal infection in less than half of the cases. Another striking feature is the significant proportion of patients being very young and

Lemierre's syndrome following perianal abscess: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV), and a history of head and neck (H&N) sepsis. LS is usually caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, which is part of the normal flora in the oro-pharynx, and the digestive and urogenital tracts. We here report the first case of LS following perianal sepsis. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old man with a painful left neck swelling, dysphagia and worsening sepsis was referred from a peripheral unit where he had an incision and drainage of

Periodontal-disease-associated biofilm: A reservoir for pathogens of medical importance.

The ecological diversity of the periodontal microenvironment may provide suitable conditions for the colonization of species not usually considered members of the oral microbiota. In this investigation, we aimed to determine the prevalence and levels of pathogenic species of medical relevance in the microbiota of individuals with distinct periodontal clinical status. Subgingival biofilm was obtained from patients with periodontal health (H, n = 81), gingivitis (G, n = 55), generalized aggressive (AgP, n = 36) or chronic periodontitis (CP, n = 98), and analyzed for 39 microbial taxa using a che

Histopathological and radiographic characterization of the lesions of pododermatitis in sheep: support for the establishment of the foot injuries degree and its prognosis.

Foot diseases in small ruminants cause locomotor disorders, leading to significant economic, productive, and health concerns in sheep and goat farming worldwide. The diagnosis and classification of lesions caused by footpad dermatitis are complex and based only on clinical observations in the field. In this context, this study assessed the histopathological and radiographic characteristics of lesions caused by pododermatitis in sheep to improve and deepen the classification of lesions and optimize diagnosis and prognosis. In this study 1.701 lame sheep were included and were distributed across

Lemierre's syndrome associated-diabetic ketoacidosis in an elderly female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of Lemierre's syndrome, primarily triggered by Fusobacterium necrophorum following oropharyngeal infection, with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients, underscores a rare but life-threatening clinical scenario. Lemierre's syndrome induced DKA is extremely rare, with only one case report in adult and no case yet reported in elderly. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of a 69-year-old female who presented with DKA triggered by deep neck space infection (DNSI), leading to rapid clinical deterioration within 6 h that necessitated high flow

Some morphological, biochemical and immunological blood parameters in European bison with or without lesions in the digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive tracts.

Ninety-seven bison (39 males and 58 females) were culled out during three successive winter seasons. No infection with BHV-1 and BHV-5 or other viruses was detected by PCR and SN methods. Advanced pathological lesions observed in males exhibiting symptoms of posthitis/balanoposthitis are probably due to secondary infection by microorganisms present in the prepuce (Corynebacterium spp., Bacillus spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum, Staphylococcus spp. (coagulase negative) and Staphylococcus hyicus). Histopathological examinations of sections from prepuce and lips of pudendum showed the presence of

A longitudinal cohort study of acute puerperal metritis cases in Swedish dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: Acute puerperal metritis affects cows during the early postpartum period and causes fever, fetid vaginal discharge and general depression. The disease is severe and treatment with antimicrobials is often required. This study followed 79 Swedish dairy cows with acute puerperal metritis with registered treatment and outcome in terms of recovery. Bacteria isolated from the uterus and their susceptibility to penicillin were studied. Clinical cases were assigned by participating practitioners who examined the cows, performed uterine swab sampling, decided treatment and provided informat

Ceftiofur derivatives in serum, uterine tissues, cotyledons, and lochia after fetal membrane retention.

The objective of the study was to determine concentrations of ceftiofur derivatives after subcutaneous application of ceftiofur hydrochloride in cows with retained fetal membranes. Concentrations of ceftiofur derivatives detected as desfuroylceftiofuracetamide were determined in blood serum, endometrium, caruncles, cotyledons, and lochia during 72 h. After induction of parturition, 2 primiparous and 4 multiparous cows having retained fetal membranes for at least 12 h were studied. All cows received 3 consecutive injections (C1 to C3; 24 h apart) of 1-mg ceftiofur equivalents per kilogram of bo

Anaerobic bacteremia in a neutropenic patient with oral mucositis.

An increasing number of anaerobic bloodstream infections in neutropenic cancer patients have been reported in the last decade. The type of anaerobes isolated from most of these patients suggests an oral source of infection. We describe a case of anaerobic bacteremia in a neutropenic patient with oral mucositis that highlights the importance of considering these organisms when selecting empiric prophylactic or therapeutic antimicrobial regimens, especially in the setting of periodontal disease or oral mucositis.

Incidence of mastoiditis complications in relation to prior community-based antibiotic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between prior community-based antibiotic treatment for acute otitis media (AOM) and the incidence and severity of complications in children hospitalized with acute mastoiditis (AM), noting that this design does not address whether prior antibiotic treatment prevents AM development. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of 522 children (age < 15 years) diagnosed with AM at a tertiary medical center between 2015 and 2025. Children were categorized by prior antibiotic exposure: those receiving antibiotics for > 48 h before hospi

Successful surgical treatment of polybacterial gas gangrene confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing detection: A case report.

BACKGROUND: We report on a case of Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) detected by metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in a 53-year-old male patient with polymicrobial gas gangrene and successful treatment by surgery. This report raises awareness among dermatologists that when a patient is clinically suspected of a special type of pathogenic infection, the mNGS method should be preferred to identify the patient's pathogen infection as soon as possible and then take effective treatment in time to save patients' lives. CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old male who worked in the aquatic market c

Spreading or Gathering? Can Traditional Knowledge be a Resource to Tackle Reindeer Diseases Associated with Climate Change?

This paper inquires whether reindeer herders' traditional knowledge (TK) provides a reservoir of precaution and adaptation possibilities that may be relevant to counteract climate change. As our core example, we used the milking of reindeer-which, in some areas, was practiced up until the 1950s-1960s-and the risk of getting foot rot disease (digital necrobacillosis; slubbo in North Sámi), caused by the bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum. Via wounds or scratches, the bacterium creates an infection that makes the infected limb swell and, eventually, necrotize. The disease is often mortal in its

Microarray identification of bacterial species in peritonsillar abscesses.

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is the most common otorhinolaryngological infection, requiring management at the special healthcare level. The microbiological findings vary due to geographical, etiological, and methodological factors. This study aimed to identify the bacterial species of PTAs by using a novel polymerase chain reaction (PCR)- and microarray-based assay, and to find causative cofactors among patients with different pathogens. We determined the bacterial findings of aspirates of pus prospectively collected from 180 PTA patients. Samples were pretreated prior to nucleic acid extractio
