AIM: The protective effects of Ginkgo biloba phytosomes (GBP) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity and the probable mechanism(s) involved in this protection were investigated in rats.
METHODS: Liver damage was induced in Wistar rats by administering a 1:1 (v/v) mixture of CCl4 and olive oil (1 ml/kg, i.p.) once daily for 7 days. GBP at 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg, i.p. and reference drug silymarin (200 mg/kg, p.o.) were administered for 10 days to CCl4-treated rats, this treatment beginning 3 days prior to the commencement of CCl4 administration. The degree of protection was evalua

The use of complementary medicines, such as plant extracts, in dementia therapy varies according to the different cultural traditions. In orthodox Western medicine, contrasting with that in China and the Far East for example, pharmacological properties of traditional cognitive- or memory-enhancing plants have not been widely investigated in the context of current models of Alzheimer's disease. An exception is Gingko biloba in which the gingkolides have antioxidant, neuroprotective and cholinergic activities relevant to Alzheimer's disease mechanisms. The therapeutic efficacy of Ginkgo extracts

Vascular dementia (VD) is the second most common type of dementia in the elderly. Currently, there are no effective drugs for preventing or decreasing the progression of dementia. Bilobalide (BB) is a monomer extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves. The present study investigated the neuroprotective effects of BB in a two-vessel occlusion (2-VO)-induced VD rat model. The results showed that BB (4 and 8 mg/kg) significantly protected VD rats against cognitive deficits in the Morris water maze. Biochemical assessment showed that BB (4 and 8 mg/kg) increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and gl

Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a condition that's caused by the shift of fluid and protein from the intravascular space to the interstitial space as a result of repetitive episodes of capillary hyperpermeability. The pathogenesis of SCLS is still unclear, but there's recently been a report showing this syndrome in association with monoclonal gammopathy. This syndrome can be a fatal disease because cardiovascular collapse can occur in the initial capillary leak phase. Although theophylline, diuretics, terbutaline, steroids, calcium antagonist, Ginkgo biloba extracts and plasmapheres

Our current therapeutic drugs for Alzheimer's disease are predominantly derived from the alkaloid class of plant phytochemicals. These drugs, such as galantamine and rivastigmine, attenuate the decline in the cholinergic system but, as the alkaloids occupy the most dangerous end of the phytochemical spectrum (indeed they function as feeding deterrents and poisons to other organisms within the plant itself), they are often associated with unpleasant side effects. In addition, these cholinesterase inhibiting alkaloids target only one system in a disorder, which is typified by multifactorial defi

The increasing interest in alternative medical practices has led to a number of controlled studies on herbal and homeopathic agents. This paper presents the results of a meta-analysis of four recent clinical trials evaluating the homeopathic preparation Vertigoheel (VH) compared with usual therapies (betahistine, Ginkgo biloba extract, dimenhydrinate) for vertigo in a total of 1388 patients. Two trials were observational studies and the other two were randomised double-blind controlled trials. The duration of treatment (6-8 weeks) and dosage were comparable in all studies. Treatments were eval

Ginkgolic acids (GAs) and Ginkgotoxin (4'-O-methylpyridoxine, MPN) are main toxic compounds in Ginkgo biloba seeds which are widely used in the treatment of coughing in China. To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of GAs, MPN and their metabolites in rat plasma, a highly sensitive method followed by ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled with linear ion trap-Orbitrap tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS) has been developed and validated. The proposed method is selective, precise and accurate enough of MPN and its metabolites (4-pyridoxic Acid, pyridoxal, and pyridoxine) for th

OBJECT: The authors present their experience with an organized intrasylvian subarachnoid hematoma (OISH) in a post-traumatic pediatric patient with dyskinesia for nearly 8 years.
METHODS: An 11-year-old Chinese boy was admitted to the authors' hospital because of dyskinesia in his right upper and lower extremities. When he was 18 months old, he fell down from a trolley and then his mouth drooped to a right angle. The brain computer tomography (CT) revealed a space-occupying lesion in his left temporoparietal region. The symptom improved after 20 days of acupuncture therapy in local hospital.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with intermittent claudication (IC), leading to a lower quality of life. Although Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) has been investigated for the treatment of IC, its clinical efficacy remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of high-dose, long-term GbE therapy in patients with PAD and IC.
METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter phase 4 trial enrolled patients with stable PAD and Fontaine stage IIb IC from 15 hospitals in South Korea. Participants were random

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo biloba extract and its active component bilobalide induce endothelium-dependent vasodilation in coronary and other vascular beds. This effect is associated with increased Ca2+-activated K+ channel activity in endothelial cells. We aimed to identify ion channels targeted by bilobalide in human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) and to explore the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were performed on cultured HCAECs. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) and prostacyclin were quantified with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays; nitric oxide and

Renexin, a compound of cilostazol and ginkgo biloba extract, has been reported to produce neuroprotective effects through antioxidant, antiplatelet, and vasodilatory mechanisms. This study was designed to investigate the protective effects of renexin on hearing, the organ of Corti (OC), and medial olivocochlear efferents against noise-induced damage. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 110 dB SPL white noise for 60 min and then randomly divided into three groups: high- and low-dose renexin-treated groups and noise only group. Renexin were administered for 7 days: 90 mg/kg to the low-dose, and 180 mg/

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent studies that have examined the efficacy of natural and complementary therapies as treatments for substance use disorders and their complications.
RECENT FINDINGS: Despite increasing interest in natural and complementary therapies for substance use disorders, rigorous clinical studies in this area are few in number. Recent clinical studies, although preliminary, have reported potential therapeutic effects for hypericum in the treatment of smoking cessation, for prickly pear extract in the prevention of alcohol hangover and magnesium supplementation as an adj

OBJECTIVE: The association between sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and radiological findings of the vertebrobasilar artery is not well-known and little research has been done. We hypothesized that the radiological features of the vertebrobasilar artery contribute to the incidence and prognosis of SSNHL.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled patients diagnosed with unilateral SSNHL (SSNHL group) and those with acute vestibular neuritis (AVN; control group) in our hospital. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. We measured the following parameters o
