BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine reduced the incidence of Hepatitis B worldwide. Genetic variability, by the presence of specific haplotypes of HLA system (HLA-DR3, HLA-DR4), influences the response to the vaccination. Antibodies to the stratum corneum of rat oesophagus (antikeratin antibodies) were assayed by indirect immunofluorescence in a prospective study of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovium and its correlation with the HLA genotype in an attempt to elucidate the role of EBV in the pathogenesis of RA.
METHODS: EBV DNA/RNA was investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of synovial tissue from 84 patients with RA and from 81 patients with non-RA arthritis (controls) and was correlated with the patients' HLA genotype.

The epidemiology of Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes was studied during a period starting after an unusually sharp epidemic of mumps. Scattered reports exist describing secondary narcolepsy that develops following disease or organic insult to the brain.
