An epidemic of 135 cases of chancroid occurred in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, from July 1975 to September 1977. BACKGROUND: The early identification of the Chlamydia trachomatis variants that cause lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is very important to establish an adequate antibiotic treatment. This identification should be made with molecular techniques that are easy to perform and accessible to most microbiology laboratories. The objective of this study was to evaluate 2 real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay (VIASURE Haemophilus ducreyi + C. trachomatis (LGV) real-time PCR detection kit and the Allplex Genital ulcer Assay) for the detection of LGV in rectal samples.

The incidence of syphilis and chancroid began to increase in the United States among heterosexuals in the mid-1980s, with most cases reported among minorities living in Eastern cities and in the South. A number of studies have established a link between increasing syphilis incidence rates and cocaine use, specifically the smoked form of the drug, which is known as "crack." A similar link was hypothesized for chancroid, but supporting data became available only recently. In New Orleans, we showed that Haemophilus ducreyi infection in male patients was strongly associated with crack cocaine use.

Chancroid is the most prevalent form of genital ulcer disease in developing countries and is undergoing a resurgence in industrialized countries. As a result of a nonspecificity of the clinical findings, the etiologic diagnosis of genital ulcer disease requires laboratory support. Genital ulcer disease is a risk factor for the transmission of human retroviral infections. An understanding of this interaction is emerging and will impact on the treatment and control programs for the agents causing genital ulcer disease.

Genital ulcers are common manifestations of infectious disease. The incidence of genital ulcers featuring a chronic course has increased since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. The purpose of this 18-month cross-sectional study was to determine the main infectious causes of chronic genital ulcers (CGU) and their correlation with HIV infection. Twenty-seven men with laboratory-confirmed lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) were identified among 211 patients tested for LGV or chancroid during a 6-y period. The patients with LGV ranged in age from 17 to 73 y; most were from countries other than France.
