Herbal Medicine in Episiotomy Wound Healing: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Episiotomy is a common obstetric intervention following vaginal delivery and is frequently associated with pain, delayed wound healing, and postpartum discomfort. Inadequate healing of episiotomy wounds may result in infection, prolonged pain, and long-term perineal complications. Traditional and complementary medicine, particularly herbal therapies, has been increasingly investigated as a potential strategy to enhance wound healing and reduce pain after episiotomy. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of herbal medicines on episiotomy wound healing and pain reduc

Antidepressant Shugan Jieyu Capsule Alters Gut Microbiota and Intestinal Microbiome Function in Rats With Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress -Induced Depression.

Shugan Jieyu Capsule (SG) has been widely used in China to treat mild to moderate depression. Hypericum perforatum L. (St John's Wort, SJW) is the main ingredient of SG and has been used as herbal medicine to treat depression in western countries. However, it is known that SJW has low bioavailability and does not easily get through the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, how SG plays an antidepressant effect in the central nervous system (CNS) remains an urgent problem to be solved. Mounting research has described the relationship between antidepressants and intestinal microbiota to illuminate ant

In vivo manipulation of cuticular water permeance and its effect on stomatal response to air humidity.

Cuticular water permeance was manipulated in Corylus avellana L., Hypericum androsaemum L. and Populus tremula L. by (1) long-term application of low doses of various systemic herbicides inhibiting biosynthesis of cuticular waxes, (2) very short-term application of organic solvents to the leaf surface, and (3) exposure to natural strong winds. Treatment effects were very variable, but increased the natural range of permeances by a factor of 10 or so in undamaged leaves. All species had hypostomatous leaves. Relative change of leaf conductance (g) in response to stepwise increases of leaf-to-ai

Are we drawing the right conclusions from randomised placebo-controlled trials? A post-hoc analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Assumptions underlying placebo controlled trials include that the placebo effect impacts on all study arms equally, and that treatment effects are additional to the placebo effect. However, these assumptions have recently been challenged, and different mechanisms may potentially be operating in the placebo and treatment arms. The objective of the current study was to explore the nature of placebo versus pharmacological effects by comparing predictors of the placebo response with predictors of the treatment response in a randomised, placebo-controlled trial of a phytotherapeutic com

Favorable fragmentation: river reservoirs can impede downstream expansion of riparian weeds.

River valleys represent biologically rich corridors characterized by natural disturbances that create moist and barren sites suitable for colonization by native riparian plants, and also by weeds. Dams and reservoirs interrupt the longitudinal corridors and we hypothesized that this could restrict downstream weed expansion. To consider this "reservoir impediment" hypothesis we assessed the occurrences and abundances of weeds along a 315-km river valley corridor that commenced with an unimpounded reach of the Snake River and extended through Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon reservoirs and dams

Glutamate-mediated antidepressant effects of Jieyu I formula via modulation of PFCCaMKII-LHbCaMKII/GABA circuitry in lipopolysaccharide-induced depression model.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Jieyu I Formula (JY-I) is an improved version of the classic formula "Sini San" documented in the books Shanghan Lun, which is known for regulating the liver and treating depression. However, the disturbance of neuronal signal transmission in the neural circuit of the brain is closely related to the occurrence of depression, yet its neural mechanism is still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to observe the antidepressant effect of JY-I on depressed mice induced by lipopolysaccharide and its underlying central nervous system mechanisms, focusing on the

Isolation, Characterization and Neuroprotective Activity of Folecitin: An In Vivo Study.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) extend the global health burden. Consumption of alcohol as well as maternal exposure to ethanol can damage several neuronal functions and cause cognition and behavioral abnormalities. Ethanol induces oxidative stress that is linked to the development of NDs. Treatment options for NDs are yet scarce, and natural product-based treatments could facilitate ND management since plants possess plenty of bioactive metabolites, including flavonoids, which typically demonstrate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Hypericum oblongifolium is an important traditio

St John's wort: a hidden risk for transplant patients.

Herbal medications may cause prescription drug interactions in transplant recipients. After 2 of our kidney transplant recipients started self-medicating with St John's wort, their cyclosporine concentrations were consistently documented to be subtherapeutic. While on St John's wort, one patient developed acute rejection possibly due to low cyclosporine concentrations. Termination of St John's wort returned both patients' cyclosporine concentrations to therapeutic values. Based on the Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale, our report would achieve a "probable" score, which supports t

Celery root extract as an inducer of mania induction in a patient on venlafaxine and St John's Wort.

Celery root belongs to a group of plants classified as the umbelliferous family, which contains phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are structurally similar to estrogen as they share a pair of hydroxyl groups and phenolic ring, which enables them to bind to estrogen receptors directly, making them a herbal remedy for low estrogen states such as menopause. We present a case of a female patient with depression who was stabilized on venlafaxine and St John's Wort, and who developed a manic episode due to elevated serum venlafaxine levels after she started taking celery extracts for menopausal related
