[The role of IPA and dual diagnosis in psychiatry].

The co-occurrence of a psychiatric disorder and a substance use disorder affects many patients in adult psychiatry, with significant clinical and social repercussions. The fragmentation of healthcare systems hinders continuity of care. A survey of 147 nurses at two psychiatric facilities explored existing practices regarding dual diagnosis and defined the roles of advanced practice nurses. These nurses contribute to improving care and reducing disruptions in the care pathway.

Epidemiological research as a driver of prevention: the Sibaté study. Commentary.

Although asbestos exposure and risks can be prevented, only five countries in Latin America have banned asbestos, including Colombia. Beginning in 2011, a collaboration between the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Italy and Universidad de los Andes in Colombia was established, bringing together relevant expertise aiming to improve our understanding of the asbestos problem. An important result of this collaboration was a recently published study conducted in Sibaté, Colombia, a municipality where an asbestos-cement facility has operated since 1942. The evidence collected suggests the presence of

[Colovesical fistulas : An interdisciplinary challenge].

BACKGROUND: The aim of treatment of patients with colovesical fistulas should be prompt elimination of the infection and the social burden. We focused on the question whether a minimally invasive surgical approach as a cooperation between surgeons and urologists is possible. This requires effective diagnostics prior to the operation. METHODS: Since 2007 a total of 32 patients with the clinical suspicion of colovesical fistula have undergone extensive preoperative diagnostics. Operative treatment aimed primarily for a minimally invasive approach. In particular, the validity of preoperative dia

[Focal point emergency departments].

The number of patients treated in hospital emergency departments in Germany has risen in recent years to approximately 20 million. This escalation also applies to the increasing numbers of patients presenting with neurological symptoms and diseases, which occur in approximately 20 % of emergency patients. In addition to patients with stroke, inflammatory or degenerative central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) disorders who need urgent treatment, more and more patients with nonspecific complaints or conditions attend emergency departments for elective treatment, not lea

Feasibility and acceptability of the cross-national multisectoral OPTIM-PARK intervention for people affected with Parkinson's disease and their family carers.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurological disease worldwide. Management of PD is complex, requiring person-centred care to address the physical, emotional, social, and economic impacts of the disease. The OPTIM-PARK intervention was developed to enhance the process of living with PD for people affected and their family carers (FCs) by designing inter- and multisectoral collaboration and incorporating a coordinator role in four European countries: Denmark, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The aim of this cross-national study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptab

Rabies in rural northeast India: A case report emphasising the urgency of the One Health approach.

Dog-mediated rabies is endemic in India. The country records the highest mortality due to dog-bite-related rabies despite the availability of interventions to prevent deaths. We present a case study of the death of a 59-year-old man in a suburban town of Northeast India after a dog bite from an owned pup. Through this case study, we investigate various omissions and commissions in communities and health professionals that make rabies rampant in India. The circumstances surrounding the death were investigated by interviewing the wife, relatives, neighbour, the hospital/nursing home where the bi

Role of Portuguese community pharmacy and pharmacists in self-care.

Portugal recognizes the importance of self-care in its policies and has been actively engaging in health literacy and citizen empowerment. The current National Health Plan for the period 2021-2030 clearly mentions the need to "take greater advantage of the network of community pharmacies throughout the national territory, in favour of the health of the community, from the protection and promotion of health, through health literacy, to the prevention and early detection of disease, and the aggravation of chronic disease, among others". There is recognition of the role of pharmacists and communi

Competing perspectives on rural homelessness: Findings from a qualitative study in Ontario, Canada.

Rural homelessness in Canada has only recently been acknowledged, and several gaps remain in our understanding of the phenomenon and how it is influenced by the rural context. This qualitative exploratory study aimed to help understand the experience of housing insecurity, factors that lead to rural homelessness, and potential solutions to the housing crisis in a rural Ontario community. Interviews were conducted with 27 participants: 16 individuals who were housing insecure and 11 key informants who had knowledge of the local homelessness situation. Data collection took place between August 2

The SARE tool for rabies control: Current experience in Ethiopia.

The Stepwise Approach towards Rabies Elimination (SARE) tool was developed through a joint effort of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), to provide a standard mechanism for countries to assess their rabies situation and measure progress in eliminating the disease. Because the African continent has the highest per capita death rate from rabies, and Ethiopia is estimated to have the second largest number of rabies deaths of all African countries, Ethiopia undertook a self-assessment by means of the Stepwise Approach

[Do We Need an Amputee Outpatient Clinic? How Innovations Promote Interdisciplinarity in Amputation Medicine].

Amputation of a limb is often a necessary, yet irreversible surgical procedure with complex functional, psychosocial, and medical consequences. Comorbidities and concomitant injuries frequently complicate both treatment and rehabilitation. At the same time, modern surgical and technological advances offer new possibilities, while also increasing the demands on comprehensive care. In response, we established an interdisciplinary consultation service to support the multiprofessional care of amputees at our university hospital.A specialized interdisciplinary clinic was established at a German ter

Advancing RAS/RASopathy therapies: An NCI-sponsored intramural and extramural collaboration for the study of RASopathies.

RASopathies caused by germline pathogenic variants in genes that encode RAS pathway proteins. These disorders include neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), Noonan syndrome (NS), cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome (CFC), and Costello syndrome (CS), and others. RASopathies are characterized by heterogenous manifestations, including congenital heart disease, failure to thrive, and increased risk of cancers. Previous work led by the NCI Pediatric Oncology Branch has altered the natural course of one of the key manifestations of the RASopathy NF1. Through the conduct of a longitudinal cohort study and early p

Improved Management of Harlequin Ichthyosis With Advances in Neonatal Intensive Care.

Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is the most severe phenotype of the autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses. HI is caused by mutations in the lipid transporter adenosine triphosphate binding cassette A 12 (ABCA12). Neonates are born with a distinct clinical appearance, encased in a dense, platelike keratotic scale separated by deep erythematous fissures. Facial features are distorted by severe ectropion, eclabium, flattened nose, and rudimentary ears. Skin barrier function is markedly impaired, which can lead to hypernatremic dehydration, impaired thermoregulation, increased metabolic demands, and
