The coccidian parasite Cystoisospora canis (syn. Isospora canis) can cause clinical disease in dogs. Three generation of schizonts have been reported in the small intestine of dogs before oocysts are excreted 9-11 days post inoculation (PI). Here, we re-evaluated asexual development of C. canis in 2 dogs necropsied 10 days after oral inoculation with 100,000 C. canis oocysts; both dogs had excreted oocysts 9 days PI. Asexual and sexual stages were seen in the lamina propria throughout the small intestine. Merozoites of different sizes were present, often in the same vacuole. They were arranged

Three cases of AIDS in patients older than 60 years of age are presented and are characterized by the delay in diagnosis even in the face of suggestive clinical manifestations because of the lack of suspicion leading to fatal short term evolution in all the cases. The importance of HIV infection and its characteristics at this age are discussed. Transfusion is the most frequent method of transmission. The clinical manifestations do not differ from those of other ages with neurological and psychiatric manifestations being significant as a form of presentation. Evolution is usually rapidly progr

In rural communities of Mozambique, dogs are utilized not only as companion animals, but also for shepherding livestock, guarding, and hunting purposes, increasing exposure of humans to zoonotic parasites. Thus, we conducted a study to assess knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of rural dog owners living in the districts of Gaza and Inhambane provinces, south of Mozambique, on cystic echinococcosis (CE) followed by a survey on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites with emphasis on Taeniidae infection in dogs from the same districts. A structured questionnaire was administered to 335 d

BACKGROUND: Gastro-enteritis is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV/AIDS and children, and Cryptosporidium is the most important parasite implicated. To date, several commercial companies have developed simple and rapid point-of-care tests for the detection of Cryptosporidium infection; however, information is scarce regarding their diagnostic significance in Ethiopia. This study aimed at evaluating the performance of a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) for the detection of Cryptosporidium stool antigen.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conduc

There are several protozoan infections that cause relatively benign illness in normal individuals but result in severe disease manifestations in patients with AIDS. These diseases include Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, CNS toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, and isosporiasis. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) caused by Pneumocystis carinii, is the most common opportunistic infection in AIDS. It is seen in more than 80% of individuals with this syndrome. Although historically classified as a protozoan, this organism shares many biochemical characteristics with fungi. The onset of PCP may be i

Several protozoa have emerged as the major opportunistic infections and cause of death in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is the leading cause of death in AIDS patients. Electron microscopy (EM) usually shows numerous trophozoites and cysts of Pneumocystis filling up the entire alveolar space, while only cysts are seen under the light microscope. The focal thickening of cyst wall of Pneumocystis, as demonstrated by EM and manifested as a "parentheses" shaped structure with silver stain, serves as a diagnostic marker for Pneumocystis. Free

Coccidiosis, a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by members of the genera Eimeria and Isospora, is one of the most common and costly diseases in chicken. The aims of this study were to assess the effect of the challenge and level of variability of measured parameters in chickens during the challenge with Eimeria maxima. Furthermore, this study aimed to investigate which parameters are the most relevant indicators of the health status. Finally, the study also aimed to estimate accuracy of prediction for traits that cannot be measured on large scale (such as intestinal lesion scor

BACKGROUND: The distribution of and factors associated with intestinal parasitic infections are poorly defined in high risk vulnerable populations such as urban slums in tropical sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: In a cross sectional study, children aged 5 years and below who presented with diarrhoea were recruited from selected outpatient clinics in Mukuru informal settlement, and from Mbagathi District hospital, Nairobi, over a period of two years (2010-2011). Stool samples were examined for the presence of parasites using direct, formal-ether concentration method and the Modified Ziehl Neelsen

BACKGROUND: Environmental and biological factors can regulate host-parasite interactions. However, in the context of habitat alteration due to human-induced activities, little is known about its effects on parasite infections in wildlife populations. This study focused on the study of 363 wild rodents (Phyllotis darwini Waterhouse 1837) inhabiting two areas with different anthropogenic pressures (i.e., non-altered [protected] and altered [rural] area) in the Coquimbo Region, in Chile, during five consecutive seasons (2021-2022). Coprological examinations were carried out using the Mini-FLOTAC

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Diarrhoea is the main clinical manifestation caused by intestinal parasitic infections in patients, with special reference to transplant recipients who require careful consideration to reduce morbidity and mortality. Further, molecular characterization of some important parasites is necessary to delineate the different modes of transmission to consider appropriate management strategies. We undertook this study to investigate the intestinal parasitic infections in transplant recipients with or without diarrhoea, and the genotypes of the isolated parasites were also dete

Recent publications have described epithelial cytoplasmic vacuoles and inclusions incidentally noted within gallbladder epithelium and concluded that they represent coccidian parasite infection, in particular, Cystoisospora belli. We identified 8 gallbladder specimens from our institution in the past 3 years in which this diagnosis was suggested or in which similar epithelial alterations were prominent. Molecular analysis was performed on the 8 gallbladder specimens and on 3 positive control specimens: small bowel biopsies from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients with diarrhea. Polymer

BACKGROUND: HIV infection has been modifying both the epidemiology and outcome of parasitic infections. Hence, this study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection among people with and without HIV infection and its association with diarrhea and CD4 T-cell count.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hawassa Teaching and Referral Hospital focusing on HIV positive individuals, who gave blood for CD4 T-cell count at their first enrollment and clients tested HIV negative from November, 2008 to March, 2009. Data on socio-demographic factors and diarr

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), represents one of the most significant zoonotic diseases globally, affecting both humans and animals. The objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of E. granulosus sensu lato in sheep and goats in a pilot region with a one-year slaughterhouse follow-up period and to determine the genetic differences and haplotypes among sheep, goat, and dog isolates. To this end, the prevalence of CE cysts was determined by monitoring the slaughter of sheep and goats at least three days a week at a slaughterhouse in

Bovine besnoitiosis, an economically important disease in cattle in some countries of Africa and Asia, is emerging in Europe. The definitive host of Besnoitia besnoiti, the causative agent of bovine besnoitiosis, is unknown and the transmission of the parasite is not completely understood. Sensitive and quantitative DNA detection methods are needed to determine whether serologically positive animals are infectious and to examine the role of vectors (e.g. haematophagous insects) in the transmission of the parasite. To this end, we established two different 5'-nuclease quantitative assays to det

Intestinal parasite infections are very frequent in HIV patients with severe immunodeficiency (CD4 < 100/mm3) causing chronic diarrhea and malabsorption in the majority of cases. The most frequent microorganisms are microsporidia and Cryptosporidium parvum while Cyclospora cayetanensis and Isospora belli are more prevalent in subtropical and tropical areas and rare in industrialized areas. The diagnosis can be obtained by stool examination (differences in size and form of cysts), although microsporidia is frequently demonstrated by intestinal biopsy and/or duodenal aspirate. The treatment with

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections and HIV/AIDS have been the major public health problems and remain a vital cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Both problems are linked in a vicious cycle. The magnitude of intestinal parasites was prevalent among people living with HIV/AIDS even in the HAART era. However, the pertinent risk factors associated with intestinal parasites among HIV/AIDS patients were not well investigated in Ethiopia particularly at Butajira town. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and associate

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a globally prevalent retrovirus associated with adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Despite substantial research, the high mortality risk among HTLV-1 carriers remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify primary causes of hospital admission, predictors of mortality, and long-term survival outcomes in HTLV-1-infected patients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in two referral hospitals in Mashhad, Iran, from 2011 to 2
