Inappropriate crying and laughing in Parkinson disease and movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine in a pilot study inappropriate crying and laughing (also termed pseudobulbar affect (PBA)) and underlying mood disturbances in a large clinic based population of Parkinson's disease and movement disorder patients. BACKGROUND: PBA is characterized by uncontrollable laughter without mirth, or alternatively crying without the feeling of sadness. It is a common condition affecting more than one million people with neurological diseases. While PBA has been studied in many neurological diseases, little is known about its prevalence in movement disorders, or its relationship to

The human basis pontis: motor syndromes and topographic organization.

Clinical-anatomic correlations were performed in 25 patients with focal infarcts in the basilar pons to determine whether pontine lacunar syndromes conform to discrete clinical entities, and whether there is topographic organization of the motor system within the human basis pontis. Twelve clinical signs were scored on a 6-point scale, neuroimaging lesions were mapped and defined with statistical certainty, and structure-function correlation was performed to develop a topographic map of motor function. Clinical findings ranged from major devastation following extensive lesions (pure motor hemi

Gelotophobia in Israel: on the assessment of the fear of being laughed at.

Gelotophobia is defined as the fear of being laughed at. Empirical studies revealed that it is a valid and useful concept which deserves further attention. Furthermore, gelotophobia is of relevance among nonclinical groups, and it should be best conceptualized as an individual differences phenomenon that ranges on a dimension from low to high fear of being laughed at. The present study presents the first empirical data on the fear of being laughed at in Israel (N = 220). It describes the adaptation of an instrument for the subjective assessment of gelotophobia to Hebrew. The translation yielde

[Mentalization Based Treatment of an Adolescent Girl with Conduct Disorder].

Mentalization Based Treatment of an Adolescent Girl with Conduct Disorder This paper will give a short overview on the theoretical concept of mentalization and its specific characteristics in adolescence. A previous study on Mentalization based treatment for adolescents (MBT-A) demonstrated the effectiveness of MBT-A for the treatment of adolescents with symptoms of deliberate self-harm (Rossouw u. Fonagy, 2012). Based on the results of this study Taubner, Gablonski, Sevecke, and Volkert (in preparation) developed a manual for mentalization based treatment for adolescents with conduct disorder

[Asperger syndrome in contemporary fictions].

BACKGROUND: During recent years, fictions featuring a character with Asperger syndrome have been increasingly produced in literature, cinema and TV. Thus, the public has gradually discovered the existence of this specific category of autism spectrum, which is far removed from old popular representations of autistic disorders, often associated with mental retardation. OBJECTIVES: To describe the reactions generated by these characters in order to identify their major functions and also to try to explain their recent increase in fictions. METHODS: First, we explored international publications

Parental imprinting and Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome is an inherited disorder that includes severe mental retardation and epilepsy. Patients have no speech, puppet-like gait with jerky movements, hyperactivity, disturbed sleep, bouts of inappropriate laughter, a pronounced jaw, and widely spaced teeth. The syndrome results from deletion or mutation within maternal chromosome 15q11-q13. Considerable evidence suggests that the gene or genes responsible for Angelman syndrome are expressed only from the maternal chromosome 15, a situation known as parental imprinting. This epigenetic marking of certain regions of the parental genom

GABA Cells in the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala Promote Cataplexy.

Cataplexy is a hallmark of narcolepsy characterized by the sudden uncontrollable onset of muscle weakness or paralysis during wakefulness. It can occur spontaneously, but is typically triggered by positive emotions such as laughter. Although cataplexy was identified >130 years ago, its neural mechanism remains unclear. Here, we show that a newly identified GABA circuit within the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) promotes cataplexy. We used behavioral, electrophysiological, immunohistochemical, and chemogenetic strategies to target and manipulate CeA activity selectively in narcoleptic (or

A ritual way of ageing well: a qualitative study of a comprehensive, culturally grounded ritual-based health programme for older adults in urban China.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid population ageing, urban migration, and the weakening of multigenerational households have left many older adults in Chinese cities facing intertwined physical decline, psychological distress, social loss, and a diminished sense of purpose. Conventional responses tend to be specialized and clinical and are often experienced by older Chinese adults as fragmented, unfamiliar, or stigmatizing. Collective ritual, defined as structured group practices using culturally familiar forms, such as greeting, blessing, mutual recognition, coordinated movement, communal singing, embrace,

Establishing the Roles of the Dorsal and Ventral Striatum in Humor Comprehension and Appreciation with fMRI.

Humor comprehension (i.e., getting a joke) and humor appreciation (i.e., enjoying a joke) are distinct, cognitively complex processes. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) investigations have identified several key cortical regions but have overlooked subcortical structures that have theoretical importance in humor processing. The dorsal striatum (DS) contributes to working memory, ambiguity processing, and cognitive flexibility, cognitive functions that are required to accurately recognize humorous stimuli. The ventral striatum (VS) is critical in reward processing and enjoyment. We h

The Effects of Preeclampsia on Perinatal Risks and Infant Temperaments Among Mothers With Antenatal Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Preeclampsia and depression are two most prevalent disorders known to affect pregnant women and unborn infant. However, few studies have prospectively examined the adverse influence of the in-utero exposures to the two disorders on the optimal development in their offspring, including mortality, adverse birth outcomes, and infant temperament styles. OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine whether exposures to preeclampsia and antenatal depression were associated with developmental indices of offspring at birth and temperament at 3 months; and (2) To evaluate how preeclampsia and antenatal depr

Child participation during outpatient consultations: a mixed methods study.

UNLABELLED: Although children wish to be included in their own healthcare, they recognize a gap between their right to be heard and their ability to become involved. Despite adaptation of medical consultation styles which suit a more patient-centered approach, data on the current state of child participation in clinical encounters are missing. We aimed to assess actual child participation in a Dutch pediatric clinic. Children aged 4-18 years visiting a pediatric outpatient clinic for consultation after general practitioner's referral were included. Sixteen consultations of six pediatricians we

Mitochondrial Gene Expression Profiles Are Associated with Maternal Psychosocial Stress in Pregnancy and Infant Temperament.

BACKGROUND: Gene-environment interactions mediate through the placenta and shape the fetal brain development. Between the environmental determinants of the fetal brain, maternal psychosocial stress in pregnancy has been shown to negatively influence the infant temperament development. This in turn may have adverse consequences on the infant neurodevelopment extending throughout the entire life-span. However little is known about the underlying biological mechanisms of the effects of maternal psychosocial stress in pregnancy on infant temperament. Environmental stressors such as maternal psycho

Treatment of drug-induced psychosis in Parkinson's disease with ziprasidone can induce severe dose-dependent off-periods and pathological laughing.

"Atypical anti-psychotics" are substances of choice in treating drug-induced psychosis (DP) in Parkinson's disease (PD). We report on four patients with DP who received treatment with ziprasidone after previously applied clozapine and quetiapine had failed. Three patients showed a significant improvement of DP, without deterioration of motor function. In one case, ziprasidone considerably increased decline in off-periods. Two patients developed pathological laughing as a possible side-effect of ziprasidone. Ziprasidone may serve as an additional "atypical anti-psychotic" for the treatment of D

Radiological correlates of pseudobulbar affect: Corticobulbar and cerebellar components in primary lateral sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a distressing symptom of a multitude of neurological conditions affecting patients with a rage of neuroinflammatory, neurovascular and neurodegenerative conditions. It manifests in disproportionate emotional responses to minimal or no contextual stimulus. It has considerable quality of life implications and treatment can be challenging. METHODS: A prospective multimodal neuroimaging study was conducted to explore the neuroanatomical underpinnings of PBA in patients with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS). All participants underwent whole genome sequenci

A deep neural network model of the primate superior colliculus for emotion recognition.

Although sensory processing is pivotal to nearly every theory of emotion, the evaluation of the visual input as 'emotional' (e.g. a smile as signalling happiness) has been traditionally assumed to take place in supramodal 'limbic' brain regions. Accordingly, subcortical structures of ancient evolutionary origin that receive direct input from the retina, such as the superior colliculus (SC), are traditionally conceptualized as passive relay centres. However, mounting evidence suggests that the SC is endowed with the necessary infrastructure and computational capabilities for the innate recognit
