Functional and Structural Brain Imaging Correlates of Treatment Response in Functional Movement Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Functional movement disorder (FMD) is a biopsychosocially-complex condition with diverse neurologic, physical, and psychiatric manifestations. Converging neuroimaging evidence demonstrates abnormalities in networks supporting self-agency, attention, sensorimotor processing, multimodal integration, salience/threat detection, and interoception. This review summarizes recent work on the prognostic and therapeutic relevance of these findings. RECENT FINDINGS: Baseline functional neuroimaging predictors of outcome implicate cingulo-insular, frontolimbic, and subcortical circuits

Is Phantom Limb Awareness Necessary for the Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain?

Phantom limb pain is attributed to abnormal sensorimotor cortical representations. Various feedback treatments have been applied to induce the reorganization of the sensorimotor cortical representations to reduce pain. We developed a training protocol using a brain-computer interface (BCI) to induce plastic changes in the sensorimotor cortical representation of phantom hand movements and demonstrated that BCI training effectively reduces phantom limb pain. By comparing the induced cortical representation and pain, the mechanisms worsening the pain have been attributed to the residual phantom h

Are resting state spectral power measures related to executive functions in healthy young adults?

Resting-state electroencephalogram (rsEEG) has been found to be associated with psychopathology, intelligence, problem solving, academic performance and is sometimes used as a supportive physiological indicator of enhancement in cognitive training interventions (e.g. neurofeedback, working memory training). In the current study, we measured rsEEG spectral power measures (relative power, between-band ratios and asymmetry) in one hundred sixty five young adults who were also tested on a battery of executive function (EF). We specifically focused on upper Alpha, Theta and Beta frequency bands giv

Autobiographical Memory Disturbances in Depression: A Novel Therapeutic Target?

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by a dysfunctional processing of autobiographical memories. We review the following core domains of deficit: systematic biases favoring materials of negative emotional valence; diminished access and response to positive memories; a recollection of overgeneral memories in detriment of specific autobiographical memories; and the role of ruminative processes and avoidance when dealing with autobiographical memories. Furthermore, we review evidence from functional neuroimaging studies of neural circuits activated by the recollection of autobiographi

Computationally Informed Interventions for Targeting Compulsive Behaviors.

Compulsive behaviors are central to addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder and can be understood as a failure of adaptive decision making. Particularly, they can be conceptualized as an imbalance in behavioral control, such that behavior is guided predominantly by learned rather than inferred outcome expectations. Inference is a computational process required for adaptive behavior, and recent work across species has identified the neural circuitry that supports inference-based decision making. This includes the orbitofrontal cortex, which has long been implicated in disorders of compulsiv

Functional neuroanatomy of tics.

The therapeutic success of haloperidol in the treatment of Tourette syndrome (TS) put an end to the discussion about a "hysteric" or "neurotic" origin of TS. The cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit has been identified as an underlying neurobiological correlate of TS. In this review we explore the main findings of structural alterations in TS including cortical areas, basal ganglia, hippocampus, amygdala, midbrain, and cerebellum. Based on the structural changes we examine the functional pattern described by the findings of fMRI and (15)O-PET/(18)FDG PET investigations. From the neuroimagi

Prediction of an fMRI-based schizophrenia biomarker from EEG using dynamic functional connectivity: a simultaneous EEG-fMRI study.

Objective.Recent advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have identified brain functions associated with psychiatric disorders using machine-learning classifiers that serve as potential fMRI-derived biomarkers (fMRI-BMs). Resting-state fMRI functional connectivity (FC) is gaining attention as a potential target for neurofeedback (NF) therapy. However, using electroencephalography (EEG) instead of fMRI remains an important research direction for clinical implementation. Here, we propose a novel approach for estimating an fMRI-BM from EEG signals using dynamic FC (dFC) to enable

Functional disorders - new proposals for definition, psychosomatics, somatization.

Functional Disorders are common medical problems both in primary and in secondary health care. The mechanisms that cause symptoms such as primary pain, fatigue, dizziness are still unknown. Various classifications, including ICD-10 or DSM-5, describe these conditions differently, and new proposals are being developed e.g. in ICD-11, RDoC. Many controversies are evoked by lack of unequivocal explanatory theory. The early psychoanalytical concept has been modified by other explanations, such as immunological abnormalities, dysfunction of vegetative system and HPA axis, central sensitization, div

Neuromodulation for tinnitus treatment: an overview of invasive and non-invasive techniques.

Tinnitus is defined as a perception of sound without any external sound source. Chronic tinnitus is a frequent condition that can affect the quality of life. So far, no causal cure for tinnitus has been documented, and most pharmacologic and psychosomatic treatment modalities aim to diminish tinnitus' impact on the quality of life. Neuromodulation, a novel therapeutic modality, which aims at alternating nerve activity through a targeted delivery of a stimulus, has emerged as a potential option in tinnitus treatment. This review provides a brief overview of the current neuromodulation technique

Neuroimaging and neuromodulation approaches to study eating behavior and prevent and treat eating disorders and obesity.

Functional, molecular and genetic neuroimaging has highlighted the existence of brain anomalies and neural vulnerability factors related to obesity and eating disorders such as binge eating or anorexia nervosa. In particular, decreased basal metabolism in the prefrontal cortex and striatum as well as dopaminergic alterations have been described in obese subjects, in parallel with increased activation of reward brain areas in response to palatable food cues. Elevated reward region responsivity may trigger food craving and predict future weight gain. This opens the way to prevention studies usin

An experimental paradigm for studying EEG correlates of olfactory discrimination.

Electroencephalography (EEG) correlates of olfaction are of fundamental and practical interest for many reasons. In the field of neural technologies, olfactory-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent an approach that could be useful for neurorehabilitation of anosmia, dysosmia and hyposmia. While the idea of a BCI that decodes neural responses to different odors and/or enables odor-based neurofeedback is appealing, the results of previous EEG investigations into the olfactory domain are rather inconsistent, particularly when non-primary processing of olfactory signals is concerned. Abnormalities in the EEG power spectrum in bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and obesity: A systematic review.

To provide a basis for electroencephalography (EEG) neurofeedback protocols for bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-eating disorder (BED), and obesity, this systematic review investigates alterations in EEG-measured brain activity, specifically frequency bands. A systematic literature search with predefined search terms yielded N = 7 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The risk of bias was assessed for all studies. In resting-state EEG, the beta activity was elevated in fronto-central regions in individuals with obesity and co-morbid BED. In food-cue conditions, both obese individuals with and wit

Exploring neural markers of dereification in meditation based on EEG and personalized models of electrophysiological brain states.

With mounting evidence for the benefits of meditation, there has been a growing interest in measuring and quantifying meditative states. This study introduces the Inner Dereification Index (IDI), a class of personalized models designed to quantify the distance from non-meditative states such as mind wandering based on a single individual's neural activity. In addition to demonstrating high classification accuracy (median AUC: 0.996) at distinguishing meditation from thinking states moment by moment, IDI can accurately stratify meditator cohorts by experience, and correctly identify the practic

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy: Systematic mapping of abnormal brain function features in neurological disorders.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy quantifies cerebral hemodynamic signals by capturing oxygenation-dependent changes in hemoglobin in a noninvasive, portable, and ecologically valid manner, providing a unique insight into neurovascular coupling. However, functional imaging biomarkers with high ecological validity for neurological disorders such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury are lacking, limiting the mechanistic understanding, treatment evaluations, and individualized interventions. Psychosomatic medicine, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and integrated care in Taiwan: Snapshot 2026.

This article provides an overview of psychosomatic medicine in Taiwan, addressing the healthcare system, clinical practice, research development, and sociocultural context. Taiwan's National Health Insurance system offers highly accessible and low-cost care, allowing patients to seek treatment freely across medical institutions, though this also results in heavy workloads for physicians. Psychosomatic medicine in Taiwan is generally regarded as part of psychiatry rather than an independent specialty, and its clinical scope includes persistent physical symptoms, sleep and eating disorders, and
