Various experimental data indicate signalling roles for nitric oxide (NO) in processes such as xylogenesis, programmed cell death, pathogen defence, flowering, stomatal closure, and gravitropism. However, it still remains unclear how NO is synthesized. Nitric oxide synthase-like activity has been measured in various plant extracts, NO can be generated from nitrite via nitrate reductase and other mechanisms of NO generation are also likely to exist. NO removal mechanisms, for example, by reaction with haemoglobins, have also been identified. NO is a gas emitted by plants, with the rate of evolu

Neisseria gonorrhoeae survives anaerobically by reducing nitrite to nitrous oxide catalyzed by the nitrite and nitric oxide reductases, AniA and NorB. P(aniA) is activated by FNR (regulator of fumarate and nitrate reduction), the two-component regulatory system NarQ-NarP, and induced by nitrite; P(norB) is induced by NO independently of FNR by an uncharacterized mechanism. We report the results of microarray analysis, bioinformatic analysis, and chromatin immunoprecipitation, which revealed that only five genes with readily identified NarP-binding sites are differentially expressed in narP(+)

We report Mycobacterium bovis BCG infection in two children vaccinated with BCG (Tokyo strain) on the first day of life. Their diagnoses were made by biopsy of skin lesions and pus from an anterior chest wall abscess, respectively, yielding a positive culture of mycobacteria fully susceptible to rifampicin, isoniazid and ethambutol, but resistant to pyrazinamide. M. bovis BCG was identified by a negative niacin test, absence of nitrate reductase and resistance to pyrazinamide and cycloserine. The diagnoses were further confirmed by a combination of an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction

Endogenous nitric oxide (NO) is a small molecule that has been demonstrated to affect the physiology and survival of bacteria. The role of endogenous NO for Staphylococcus aureus survival inside host cells remains unclear. Here, we show that the production of endogenous NO by bacterial nitrate reductase (NR) is affected by molybdopterin biosynthesis protein A (MoeA), which is essential for molybdenum cofactor synthesis in S. aureus. During the infection, the production of endogenous NO promotes S. aureus survival inside macrophages by initiating cellular autophagy. Mechanistically, bacterial e

Although sulfide is typically regarded as toxic to eukaryotic cells, it is avidly consumed by Tetrahymena pyriformis. That was observed only when the sulfide concentration was kept below 1 microM. Previously concentrations that were too high had been tested. A new device (Sulfidostat) was used to measure sulfide consumption in steady-state concentrations as low as 10(-12)M. The technique was validated non-biologically by slowly injecting AgNO(3) into buffer and using Ag(2)S precipitation to mimic sulfide consumption, confirming that rates of sulfide consumption could be measured independently

Protein is a macronutrient required by dogs for growth and maintenance metabolism. However, a portion of the crude protein listed on pet foods may actually arise from non-digestible organic nitrogen or potentially toxic inorganic non-protein nitrogen sources. Neither non-protein source is retained or used by the animal. However, these compounds may result in adverse effects such as methemoglobin formation and increased oxidative stress or potentially beneficial effects such as improved vascular distensibility and decreased inflammation. To analyze nitrogen retention and screen for non-protein

The cystic fibrosis (CF) lung contains thick mucus colonized by opportunistic pathogens which adapt to the CF lung environment over decades. The difficulty associated with sampling airways has impeded a thorough examination of the biochemical microhabitats these pathogens are exposed to. An indirect approach is to study the responses of microbial communities to these microhabitats, facilitated by high-throughput sequencing of microbial DNA and RNA from sputum samples. Microbial metagenomes and metatranscriptomes were sequenced from multiple CF patients, and the reads were assigned taxonomy and

Biological reduction of Fe(III)EDTA is one of the key steps in nitrogen oxides removal in the integrated approach of metal chelate absorption combined with microbial reduction. Paracoccus denitrificans ZGL1 was used as a model bacterium to evaluate the process of Fe(III)EDTA reduction by such microorganisms that could carry out the simultaneous reduction of NO chelated by Fe(II)EDTA (Fe(II)EDTA-NO) and Fe(III)EDTA. Enzymes analysis indicated Fe(III)EDTA reductase of ZGL1 was located both in the membrane and cytoplasmic fractions. Glucose was identified as the most efficient electron donor for

With the growth of the world population, cadmium (Cd) concentration in the environment has increased considerably as a result of human activities such as foundry, battery disposal, mining, application of fertilizers containing toxic elements as impurities, and disposal of metal-containing waste. Higher plants uptake N as ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3- ), and many other water-soluble compounds such as urea and amino acids, and nourishing plants with N, providing part of it as NH4+, is an interesting alternative to the supply of this nutrient in the exclusive form of NO3- under Cd toxicity. With the rapid development of industry and agriculture, excessive nitrogen and phosphorus released into natural surface water have caused eutrophication. Applying submerged plants to manage eutrophic water has attracted widespread attention. However, there are limited studies on the effects of different nitrogen and phosphorus in the water environment on submerged plants and their epiphytic biofilm. Therefore, this paper investigated the effects of eutrophic water with ammonium chloride (IN), urea (ON), potassium dihydrogen phosphate (IP), and sodium-β-glycerophosphate (OP) on Myriophyllum ver

Deficiency of certain elements can cause leaf chlorosis in Areca catechu L. trees, which causes considerable production loss. The linkage between nutrient deficiency and chlorosis phenomenon and physiological defect in A. catechu remains unclear. Here, we found that low iron supply is a determinant for chlorosis of A. catechu seedling, and excessive iron supply resulted in dark green leaves. We also observed morphological characters of A. catechu seedlings under different iron levels and compared their fresh weight, chlorophyll contents, chloroplast structures and photosynthetic activities. To study the regulation of sulfate metabolism in barley (Hordeum vulgare), seedlings were exposed to atmospheric hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the presence and absence of a sulfate supply. Sulfate deprivation reduced shoot and root biomass production by 60% and 70%, respectively, and it affected the plant's mineral nutrient composition. It resulted in a 5.7- and 2.9-fold increased shoot and root molybdenum content, respectively, and a decreased content of several other mineral nutrients. Particularly, it decreased shoot and root total sulfur contents by 60% and 70%, respectively. These decreases c

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a ubiquitously distributed opportunistic pathogen that inhabits soil and water as well as animal-, human-, and plant-host-associated environments. The ubiquity would be attributed to its very versatile energy metabolism. P. aeruginosa has a highly branched respiratory chain terminated by multiple terminal oxidases and denitrification enzymes. Five terminal oxidases for aerobic respiration have been identified in the P. aeruginosa cells. Three of them, the cbb(3)-1 oxidase, the cbb(3)-2 oxidase, and the aa(3) oxidase, are cytochrome c oxidases and the other two, the bo

The ecotoxicological effects of engineered nanoparticles in aquatic environments are influenced not only by composition and size but also by particle morphology, yet shape-dependent interactions with primary producers remain poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the cellular and molecular responses of freshwater algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) following exposure to 100 nm silica-coated gold nanospheres (AuNPs) and nanostars (AuNSs) across multiple concentrations. Exposure to 10 mg/L AuNSs for 72 h results in significantly stronger inhibition of algal growth and photosynthetic activi

Cyanobacterial blooms, exacerbated by climate change and eutrophication, increasingly compromise water quality by producing taste and odor (T&O) compounds including 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Cyanobacteria synthesize MIB by redirecting carbon metabolism intermediates into the methylerythritol phosphate pathway. This process appears to be influenced by rising atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). This study examines how elevated pCO2 affects MIB production in Synechococcus sp. FACHB-1061 under varying nutrient conditions. The results indicate that elevated pCO2 boosts cyanobacterial biomass a
