Enhanced nitrogen removal for low C/N wastewater via preventing futile carbon oxidation and augmenting anammox.

Efficient carbon use is crucial for biological nitrogen removal. Traditional aerobic processes can waste carbon sources, exacerbating carbon deficiency. This study explores an anaerobic/oxic/anoxic system with sludge double recirculation to improve nitrogen removal in low C/N wastewater. This system integrated aerobic nitrification after the carbon intracellular storage, separating carbon and nitrogen by denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms (DGAOs) with endogenous partial denitrification and Anammox within the anoxic units. A significant efficiency of 91.02±7.01% chemical oxygen demand

Fluvial biofilm functioning is impaired by 1H-benzotriazole under fish-mediated nutrient enrichment.

Microbial biofilms respond to environmental stress and drive key biogeochemical processes in streams, underpinning ecosystem services such as toxicant removal, carbon fixation, and nutrient cycling. 1H-benzotriazole (B1H) is a ubiquitous emerging pollutant with known effects on microorganisms, plants and animals, that frequently co-occurs with nutrient enrichment in effluent-impacted freshwaters. Using fluvial microcosms, we evaluated the effects of B1H below reported toxicity thresholds (nominal: 200µg/L; measured 175±12µg/L, mean±SD) on epilithic biofilm structure and functioning under dynam

Shift of nitrogen metabolism drives the evolution of multidrug resistance in wastewater microbiomes under long-term fluoride stress.

The discharge of fluoride-containing industrial wastewater poses novel challenges to biological wastewater treatment systems. In particular, the long-term impacts of fluoride (F-) stress on key metabolic fluxes (e.g., nitrogen transformation) and the dissemination risk of biological pollutants (e.g., antibiotic resistance genes) in biological treatment systems remain unclear. This study systematically investigated the nitrogen removal performance, microbial community structure, and resistome evolution in a sequencing batch bioreactor under prolonged (120-day) stress from 20 mg/L F-. The result

Protist-mediated microbiome governance: Integrating trophic ecology, rhizosphere biology, and biotechnological potential.

Soil protists - a phylogenetically diverse group of unicellular eukaryotes, encompassing bacterivorous flagellates, predatory amoebae, fungivorous vampyrellids, and parasitic plasmodiophorids - exist at densities ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁸ cells per gram of soil, yet are systematically underrepresented in microbiome research compared to bacteria and fungi. This review presents soil protists as active regulators of microbial community structure, nutrient biogeochemistry, and functional ecosystem resilience, rather than just passive dwellers of the soil. Three interconnected mechanistic aspects are

[Nitrate Sources and Key Transformation of River Water in a Piedmont Agricultural Area].

Water nitrate (NO3-) pollution is a pressing global environmental issue. Accurately identifying the diverse sources and quantifying the proportional contributions of NO3- in surface river water remains challenging, especially under complex hydrogeological conditions. This study investigated the surface river water in a typical piedmont agricultural area by integrating hydrochemistry, multiple isotopes (δ2H-H2O, δ18O-H2O, δ18O-NO3-, and δ15N-NO3-), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), in combination with two quantitative models (i.e., Bayesian stable isotope mixing, MixSIAR; positive matrix fact

Polyethylene glycol outer layer regulates heterogeneous nucleation to alleviate Cr(VI) stress and promote biomineralization and denitrification performance of strain LX-6: Performance and mechanism.

Photovoltaic wastewater often contains hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), fluoride (F-), and poorly biodegradable polyethylene glycol (PEG), and this complex pollution poses a severe challenge to biological denitrification systems. This study focused on strain LX-6 (Acinetobacter sp.), which possesses both heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HNAD) and microbial-induced calcium precipitation (MICP) capabilities, to systematically investigate the inhibitory effects of Cr(VI) on denitrification and mineralization and to elucidate the mechanism by which PEG alleviates Cr(VI) stress thr

Interaction Mechanisms Among Soil Environmental Factors, Microbial Communities, and Nitrogen-Cycling Functional Genes in Cool-Climate Maize Fields.

Cool-climate maize fields are characterized by low soil temperatures, strong seasonal hydrothermal fluctuations, and peat-influenced soil profiles, which may lead to patterns of nitrogen (N) cycling distinct from those in conventional agricultural soils. During maize growth, soils from three depths were characterized using physicochemical measurements, N-transformation and enzyme-activity assays, metagenomic sequencing, Mantel tests, variation partitioning analysis, and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM). Soil environmental factors varied significantly over time and with depth; soil

Ubiquity and Dominance of Comammox Over AOB and AOA and their Links To ARGs in Antarctic Lake Sediments.

Complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox), oxidizing ammonia to nitrate directly, have been found to exist widely in multiple environments, but their distribution patterns are still under-explored in Antarctic environments. For the first time, the sediments were collected from West Antarctic lakes to investigate distribution patterns and community structure for comammox, ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), as well as the associations between ammonia oxidizers and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Comammox clade B and AOB were dominant ammonia

Effects of anthropogenic activities on soil microbial communities and greenhouse gas fluxes in coastal wetlands of the Yellow River Delta, China.

Coastal wetlands are key emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Anthropogenic activities can alter the carbon and nitrogen cycle patterns in wetlands, thereby greatly affecting GHG fluxes. Previous studies have focused only on the effects of a single anthropogenic activity, thus, the effects of multiple anthropogenic activities on GHG fluxes and the underlying microbiological mechanisms remain unknown. Compared to natural reed areas (NA), our study investigated the four typical anthropogenic activities (Yellow River farmland (YA), sewage outfalls (SA), mariculture (MA), and oil extraction areas

Integrative multi-omics elucidates the impact of microalgae on growth, quality, phytohormones, and rhizosphere microbiome of Angelica sinensis.

Microalgae have recently been recognized as sustainable biofertilizers that improve soil fertility while enhancing crop performance. However, their roles in regulating medicinal plant growth and quality, as well as the underlying ecological mechanisms, remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically assessed the effects of three representative microalgae-Anabaena cylindrica (AC), Phormidium tenue (PT), and Chlorella vulgaris (CV)-on the growth, quality, hormonal regulation, soil nutrient dynamics, and rhizosphere microbiome of Angelica sinensis. Field inoculation trials demonstrated

A vertical-flow constructed wetland-microalgal membrane photobioreactor integrated system for treating high-pollution-load marine aquaculture wastewater: A lab-scale study.

Individual biological water treatment techniques often prove ineffective in removing accumulated high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the late stages of biofloc aquaculture. To address this issue, we integrated a previously developed autotrophic denitrification and nitrification integrated constructed wetland (ADNI-CW) with a microalgal membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). Under high nitrogen and phosphorus pollution loads in the influent, the standalone ADNI-CW system achieved removal rates of only 24.17 % ± 2.82 % for total nitrogen (TN) and 25.30 % ± 2.59 % for total phosphorus (TP

Metagenomics reveals the variations in functional metabolism associated with greenhouse gas emissions during legume-vegetable rotation process.

Legume-based rotation is commonly recognized for its mitigation efficiency of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, variations in GHG emission-associated metabolic functions during the legume-vegetable rotation process remain largely uncharacterized. Accordingly, a soybean-radish rotation field experiment was designed to clarify the responses of microbial communities and their GHG emission-associated functional metabolism through metagenomics. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon and total phosphorus significantly decreased during the soybean-radish process (P < 0.05)

Microbial communities contribute to the elimination of As, Fe, Mn, and NH4+ from groundwater in household sand filters.

Household sand filters (SFs) are widely applied to remove iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), and ammonium (NH4+) from groundwater in the Red River delta, Vietnam. Processes in the filters probably include a combination of biotic and abiotic reactions. However, there is limited information on the microbial communities treating varied groundwater compositions and on whether biological oxidation of Fe(II), Mn(II), As(III), and NH4+ contributes to the overall performance of SFs. We therefore analyzed the removal efficiencies, as well as the microbial communities and their potential activitie

Nutrient removal performance and microbial composition analysis in hybrid membrane bioreactor for municipal wastewater treatment.

The removal of nutrients from wastewater to reduce the toxicity of these compounds to the environment requires more space in wastewater treatment plants to establish anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic treatment stages. To address this limitation, researchers have developed practical, intensive hybrid treatment systems that enhance nutrient removal performance while requiring less space. However, the implementation of hybrid systems within a reactor introduces the interaction between the attached and suspended growth that can influence the microbial community structure and the performance of the sys

Influence of filter backwashing on iron, manganese, and ammonium removal in dual-media rapid sand filters used for drinking water production.

Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and ammonium (NH4+) removal from groundwater using rapid sand filtration is a widely employed method in drinking water production. Over time, Fe and Mn oxides accumulate in the filter, which necessitates frequent backwashing to avoid clogging. In this study, we investigated the impact of backwashing on the microbial community and filter chemistry in a dual-media filter comprising anthracite and sand layers. Specifically, we focused on the removal of Fe, Mn, and NH4+ over the runtime of the filter. With increasing runtime, depth profiles of dissolved and particulate F

Involvement of functional metabolism promotes the enrichment of antibiotic resistome in drinking water: Based on the PICRUSt2 functional prediction.

Biofilters are the important source and sink of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) in the drinking water. Current studies generally ascribed the prevalence of BAR in biofilter from the perspective of gene behavior, i.e. horizontal gene transfer (HGT), little attentions have been paid on the ARGs carrier- ARB. In this study, we proposed the hypothesis that ARB participating in pollutant metabolism processes and becoming dominant is an important way for the enrichment of ARGs. To verify this, the antibiotic resistome and bacterial functional metabolic pat

Graphitic carbon nitride alleviates cadmium toxicity to soybeans through nitrogen supply.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising candidate for heavy metal remediation, primarily composed of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). It has been demonstrated that g-C3N4 adjusts rhizosphere physicochemical conditions, especially N conditions, alleviating the absorption and accumulation of Cadmium (Cd) by soybeans. However, the mechanisms by which g-C3N4 induces N alterations to mitigates plant uptake of Cd remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of g-C3N4-mediated changes in N conditions on the accumulation of Cd by soybeans using pot experiments. It also explored the microbio

Milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 suppresses the aberrant immune response of systemic lupus erythematosus-derived neutrophils and associated tissue damage.

Abnormal features of the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-derived neutrophils, promoted aberrant immune response, have inspired new studies of the induction of autoimmunity and the development of organ damage in SLE. In this study, we explore the effect of milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 (MFG-E8) on the aberrant nitrification features in pristane-induced lupus. SLE patients and mice with pristane-induced lupus develop autoantibodies associated with MFG-E8 overproduction. However, the deletion of MFG-E8 leads to uncontrolled early pulmonary and peritoneal inflammation and tissue damage in mice

Microbial removal of atmospheric carbon tetrachloride in bulk aerobic soils.

Atmospheric concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) were removed by bulk aerobic soils from tropical, subtropical, and boreal environments. Removal was observed in all tested soil types, indicating that the process was widespread. The flux measured in field chamber experiments was 0.24 ± 0.10 nmol CCl(4) (m(2) day)(-1) (average ± standard deviation [SD]; n = 282). Removal of CCl(4) and removal of methane (CH(4)) were compared to explore whether the two processes were linked. Removal of both gases was halted in laboratory samples that were autoclaved, dry heated, or incubated in the pre

Leaching and aging decrease nickel toxicity to soil microbial processes in soils freshly spiked with nickel chloride.

Nickel is a trace metal that exhibits pronounced long-term immobilization reactions in soil. It is unknown if the slowly decreasing solubility of Ni in soil on aging correlates with decreased toxicity to soil biota. Three uncontaminated soils (pH 4.5-7.6) were contaminated with NiCl2 and experimentally leached or incubated outdoors with free drainage for up to 15 months. Nickel toxicity was measured for three microbial processes (potential nitrification rate, glucose-induced respiration, and C mineralization of maize residue). Results for leached and aged samples were compared with results for
