Changes in tooth size-arch length relationships from the deciduous to the permanent dentition: a longitudinal study.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the changes in the maxillary and mandibular tooth size-arch length relationship (TSALD) after the complete eruption of the deciduous dentition (mean age = 4.0 years) to the time of eruption of the second molars (mean age = 13.3 years). In addition, an attempt was made to determine whether TSALD in the permanent dentition can be predicted in the deciduous dentition. Records on 35 male and 27 female subjects were evaluated. Each subject had a clinically acceptable occlusion--that is, a normal molar and canine relationship, at the time of eruption

Changes in clinical crown length and the development of gingival recession associated with orthodontic treatment-induced incisor inclination changes: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gingival recession results from the displacement of the gingival margin apically to the cementoenamel junction. There is unclear evidence regarding the impact of orthodontic treatment on the development of gingival recessions. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in clinical crown length and the development of gingival recession on the labial aspect of the maxillary and mandibular incisors associated with orthodontic treatment and relate these changes to the observed variations in their sagittal inclination. MATERIALS/METHODS: Eighty-two consecutive subj

Comparison of electronic apex locator and simultaneous working length detection methods with radiological method in terms of postoperative pain.

BACKGROUND: Precise knowledge of the apical construction, which determines the end of the area for canal preparation and filling, is essential for the success of root canal treatment and the management of postoperative pain. For this purpose, devices based on various methods that determine the working length (WL) are used. However, it is still controversial which method provides the most accurate measurements. AIM: To investigate the compatibility of the electronic apex locator (EWL) and simultaneous working length determination (SWL) methods in single-root teeth in comparison with the radiog

Biomechanical considerations in mandibular incisor extraction cases.

Mandibular incisor extraction can be regarded as a valuable treatment option in certain malocclusions to obtain excellence in orthodontic results in terms of function, aesthetics and stability. This treatment alternative is indicated in clinical situations like mild to moderate class III malocclusion, mild anterior mandibular tooth size excess, periodontally compromised teeth, ectopic eruption of mandibular incisor and minimal openbite tendencies. Unlike in premolar extraction cases, space closure in mandibular incisor extraction cases is unique in which the extraction space will be in the mid

Long- and short-term effects of headgear traction with and without the maxillary second molars.

INTRODUCTION: A quantitative assessment of maxillary first molar distalization with and without the maxillary second molar (M2) was carried out. METHODS: Fifty-six cervical headgear patients undergoing fixed appliance orthodontic treatment were divided into 2 groups: before (G - M2) and after (G + M2) eruption of the maxillary second molars (ages, 11.87 ± 1.20, and 13.05 ± 1.55 years, respectively). The tightness of the dental contact point (TDCP) and the space between the second premolar and the maxillary first molar were measured at 6 levels of headgear force (0-15 N) at 3 intervals 6 month

Early postnatal development of the mandibular permanent first molar in infants with isolated cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Based on measurements on dental casts, smaller permanent teeth in children with cleft palate have previously been reported in the literature; however, the early maturation of teeth and the size of the follicles and crowns have not been investigated. HYPOTHESIS: The maturation of the mandibular permanent first molar (M1(inf)) is delayed, and the mesiodistal diameters of the follicle and crown of M1(inf), respectively, are reduced in children with isolated cleft palate (ICP). DESIGN: Retrospective, longitudinal. Cephalometric X-rays were available for 2 and 22 months old children w

Root resorption after orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment can result in root resorption. OBJECTIVE: To determine if apical root resorption is related to the type of appliance used and/or the direction and amount of tooth movement. METHODS: The pre- and post-treatment tooth lengths of the maxillary and mandibular first molars and incisors were measured on panoramic radiographs of 114 subjects. Associations between changes in the lengths of the incisors and positional changes in the upper and lower central incisors were determined for 45 subjects with pre- and post-treatment cephalometric radiographs. RESULTS: Takin

Asymmetry in the condylar long axis and first molar rotation.

Asymmetric growth occurs frequently in the mandibulofacial region, but little attention has been given to asymmetry in the temporomandibular joint. The purpose of this study was to clarify the feature of asymmetry in the condylar long axis and its relation to upper first molar rotation. Records of 148 pre-orthodontic patients were used. The angle of the condylar long axis and that of the molar rotation were both larger on the left side than on the right side. Positive correlations were found between the corresponding bilateral measurements of condylar long axes and also between those of molar

Relationships among facial type, buccolingual molar inclination, and cortical bone thickness of the mandible.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between different facial types, and both the buccolingual molar inclination and cortical bone thickness of the mandible. The material consisted of 31 dry skulls of modern Japanese males from the Museum of the University of Tokyo. They all demonstrated normal occlusion with minimal dental discrepancy, and without crossbite or facial asymmetry. The buccolingual inclination of the second molar (M2) in the long-faced subjects was significantly smaller than the same dimension in the average- and short-faced subjects. It was found that the

Evaluation of root canal morphology of human primary molars by using CBCT and comprehensive review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of primary tooth morphology is essential for clinical dentistry, especially for root canal treatment and dental traumatology. However, this has not been well documented to date with a large sample. This study was carried out to investigate the variation in number and morphology of the root canals of the primary molars, to study the applicability of cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) in assessing the same and to provide a comprehensive review of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 343 primary molars, without any root resorption, were divided into four m

Rubber dam isolation--key to success in diastema closure technique with direct composite resin.

The use of direct composite resin for diastema closure has technique advantages, including that the restorative procedure can be carried out in one appointment at a reasonable cost and without the removal of sound tooth structure. The use of a rubber dam for closing diastemas with composite resin is of paramount importance as it prevents moisture contamination and ensures increased gingival retraction compared to other techniques. This provides better access to the cervical area of the tooth, facilitating proper placement of resin to recreate the natural anatomical contours and contact point.

Gingival labial recessions and the post-treatment proclination of mandibular incisors.

INTRODUCTION: A prerequisite for development of gingival recession is the presence of alveolar bone dehiscence. Proclination of mandibular incisors can result in thinning of the alveolus and dehiscence formation. OBJECTIVE: To assess an association between proclination of mandibular incisor and development of gingival recession. METHODS: One hundred and seventeen subjects who met the following inclusion criteria were selected: 1. age 11-14 years at start of orthodontic treatment (TS), 2. bonded retainer placed immediately after treatment (T0), 3. dental casts and lateral cephalograms availab

Association between gingival recession and proclination of maxillary central incisors near the cleft in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate: A retrospective case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate whether proclination of the maxillary central incisor near a cleft leads to gingival recession in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate. METHODS: Forty patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate were retrospectively enrolled. By using intraoral slides, casts, and cephalograms, changes in gingival recession and proclination were measured. The 2-sample t test, correlation, and stepwise logistic regression analyses were applied. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in proclination variations between subj

Upper incisor intrusion: an anatomical analysis via CBCT.

OBJECTIVE: To verify, via CBCT, the existence of a definable distance for bodily intrusion of maxillary incisors, and its correlation to age, sex and/or facial biotype. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of sagittal sections obtained from 79 CBCTs of 220 maxillary incisors correctly aligned on their osseous base (maxillary plane/long axis between 105° and 115°). The same sagittal sections were then used to measure the distance between the root apex and upper internal cortical bone of the jaw at each incisor, along the extension of the long axis. The patient sample was divided into th

Enameloplasty and esthetic finishing in orthodontics-differential diagnosis of incisor proclination-the importance of appropriate visualization and records part 2.

The purpose of this paper is to briefly review some of the principals of ideal tooth shape and morphology and demonstrate how to use tooth reshaping through enameloplasty to treat and finish orthodontic cases to much more esthetic conclusions. This paper demonstrates the significant improvement to a smile orthodontists can achieve if they understand the principles of dental esthetics. In assessing smile design, the patient must be evaluated in three dimensions, and both dental and skeletal components must be considered. Using digital photography to visualize, plan, and prepare a complex porcelain veneer case.

Visualization and pre-operative plan are critical to efficient and thorough case preparation. Congenitally missing teeth, coupled with improper tooth positioning, can compromise the aesthetic rehabilitation outcome. Utilizing pre-treatment digital photography as an outline for tooth reduction and laser tissue re-contouring may help to create a symmetric and pleasing smile, even under less ideal conditions.
