We retrospectively evaluated the clinical and radiological outcomes of a consecutive cohort of patients aged > 70 years with a displaced fracture of the olecranon, which was treated non-operatively with early mobilisation. We identified 28 such patients (27 women) with a mean age of 82 years (71 to 91). The elbow was initially immobilised in an above elbow cast in 90° of flexion of the elbow for a mean of five days. The cast was then replaced by a sling. Active mobilisation was encouraged as tolerated. No formal rehabilitation was undertaken. At a mean follow-up of 16 months (12 to 26), the me

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Olecranon fractures in skeletally immature patients are rather rare and represent up to 7% of elbow skeletal injuries. Although the majority of olecranon fractures is constituted by undisplaced fractures treated conservatively with good outcomes, a few of them require surgery. The aim of the study was to compare two different approaches of surgical treatment - the open reduction with tension band wiring - cerclage (ORCe) and the closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP). MATERIAL AND METHODS 37 patients (28 boys, 9 girls) were included in the retrospective multicent

INTRODUCTION: Distal humerus fractures are rare and challenging to treat. Anatomic reduction of the articular surface and stable osteosynthesis are mandatory for satisfactory results. The transolecranon approach allows superior visualisation of the joint. However, controversy exists regarding how best to fix the osteotomy. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the eligibility of a one-third tubular hook plate for osteosynthesis of olecranon osteotomies in distal humerus type-C fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A consecutive series of 34 patients who were treated through an olecra

The conduction velocities of the alpha motor fibres and the IA sensitive fibres of the ulnar nerve have been studied in a group of full term newborn babies and during the neonatal period. At birth the average conduction velocity of the alpha motor fibres is 25,7 m/sec (sigma = to 2,4 m/sec) that of the IA afferent fibres is 35 m/sec (sigma = to 3,2 m/sec). The post natal evolution of the conduction velocity as a function of age has been established for both types of fibres. The time required for nervous conduction between the olecranon process and the wrist diminishes clearly in the course of

Traversodontids are non-mammaliaform cynodonts, herbivorous to omnivorous, that lived during the Triassic. In the Late Triassic, some members of this group increased in body size relative to other cynodont lineages and evolved postcranial adaptations associated with locomotion. The Late Triassic Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum is one such traversodontid. Originally described in 2018 based on cranial material, the species has since been the focus of considerable advances in our understanding of its skull anatomy; however, its postcranial skeleton remains undescribed. The present study examined the p

We present 33 children with 34 elbow dislocations. In 22 cases concomittant fractures around the elbowe were noted: 13 displaced medial epicondyle fractures, 5 radial neck fractures, 2 radial head fractures, 2 coronoid process fractures, 1 olecranon fracture, 1 lateral condyle fracture, 1 medial condyle fracture. In 5 children more than one concomittant fracture were noted. The mean age during dislocation was 11 years (from 4 to 15), the mean follow up period was 3.5 years (from 2 to 5). On follow up a clinical examination of the elbow was performed including axis assesment and elbow ROM. X-ra

The aim of this study was to report the results of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMC) transplantation as a minimally invasive treatment for grade 2 UAP in dogs. This was an observational case series on six German shepherd dogs affected by grade 2 UAP as defined according to their clinical condition as well as radiographic and CT findings. Bone marrow was collected from the iliac crest and the mononuclear fraction was separated with density gradient centrifugation. Cells were suspended in fibrin glue before BMMC administration and implanted via transcutaneous injection under IB or C

A recently discovered partial skeleton of the adapid Cantius trigonodus from the early Eocene Willwood Formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, documents substantial new information about the anatomy of the oldest lemuriform primates. It is very similar in all features to its descendant, middle Eocene Notharctus, and both exhibit numerous resemblances to certain extant Malagasy lemurs, particularly Lepilemur, Propithecus, Lemur, and Hapalemur griseus. Like these forms, Cantius had relatively long hind limbs and short forelimbs. Forelimb traits (prominent brachialis flange of the humerus, well-

High valgus and extension loads imparted to the athlete's elbow during repetitive overhead throwing can lead to acute and chronic pathology. Over time, normal soft tissue and bony stabilizing structures of the elbow undergo progressive structural changes and can succumb to injury. Modern diagnostic modalities, including plain radiographs, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, in addition to arthroscopy, can aid in diagnosis. Although nonoperative management is often successful, surgical intervention may be necessary before allowing return to play.

Olecranon fractures are common injuries of the upper extremity; majority are treated surgically. A variety of fixation techniques are available to surgeons in modern practice, but there is little comparative clinical research to guide one's decision. Nonetheless, good results over all are to be expected after surgical management. This article presents a review of the current understanding and available evidence in the treatment of olecranon fractures, their relevant anatomy, fracture patterns, fixation options, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Because of poor soft-tissue coverage at the proximal ulna and prominent posteriorly positioned implants, hardware removal remains the most common reason for revision surgery of olecranon fractures that were operatively treated using plate osteosynthesis. We hypothesized that low-profile double-plate osteosynthesis would reduce the number of soft tissue-related hardware removals compared with single posterior plating whereas the functional results would be comparable.
METHODS: This study retrospectively included patients who were treated with low-profile double-plate osteosynthesis

Crouzon syndrome is an autosomal dominant craniosynostosis syndrome caused by mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR-2). Numerous findings from animal studies imply a critical role for FGFRs in the regulation of skeletal development. Here, we report 2 unrelated patients with Crouzon syndrome accompanied by elbow deformity. Subsequently, we analyzed the sequence of the FGFR2 gene and found that both of the patients carried the Cys342Arg mutation. The findings suggest that the C342R mutation in FGFR2 may cause Crouzon syndrome and elbow deformity in Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the difference in displacement of a newly designed intramedullary olecranon fracture fixation device compared with multifilament tension band wiring after 4 cycles and 300 cycles of dynamic continuous loading.
METHODS: In eight pairs of fresh-frozen cadaver ulnae, oblique olecranon fractures were created and stabilized using either newly designed intramedullary olecranon nail or multifilament tension band wiring. The specimens were then subjected to continuous dynamic loading (from 25 N to 200 N) using matched pairs of cadaveric upper extremi

BACKGROUND: The trans-olecranon approach has been suggested to improve the visualization of complex intra-articular distal humerus fractures. Significant osteotomy complications have prompted a search for alternative approaches. The purpose of this series was to study the outcome of the olecranon osteotomy in terms of union and complications and the ultimate outcome of the fracture.
METHODS: Ninety-four patients with intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus (type C3) were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using the trans-olecranon approach. The patients were followed from

OBJECTIVE: Duckerley type IIIB distal humerus fractures are rare and complex injuries that pose significant challenges in both diagnosis and treatment. Currently, no consensus exists on the fixation method, with existing approaches often struggling to handle small fragments and associated with issues like elbow instability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the surgical outcomes of submerged Kirschner wires combined with plate or submerged screw fixation technique for the treatment of Duckerley type IIIB distal humerus fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 10 pa

A case series was extracted from the trauma registry at Aga Khan University Hospital from the period June 2015 to June 2019. Included were 16 adult patients who presented with intra-articular distal humerus fracture type C2. The functional, clinical and radiological outcomes of fractures treated with or without olecranon osteotomy up to 12 months follow-up were compared. Outcomes were assessed at 6 weeks, 3, 6 and 12 months re-visits. Among the 16 studied patients, 9 (56%) were males and 7 (44%) were females. In the group without osteotomy, there was a good functional and clinical outcome with
