Modeling the extrinsic incubation of Dirofilaria immitis in South America based on monthly and continuous climatic data.

The spread and recrudescence of dirofilariosis across several regions, either caused by Dirofilaria immitis or D. repens, responds to many factors. Building upon the temperature model by Slocombe et al. (1989), a number of studies have been performed to generate predictive models for dirofilariosis. These studies have demonstrated the length of transmission periods and the number of Dirofilaria generations supported throughout several regions of the world (either at large or at small-scale). The usual procedure have proved to be extremely time consuming, as it appears impractical when assessin

Anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms: update of the situation in the American continent.

The present paper reviews the frequency of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms in different countries of the American continent and describes some aspects that might influence the trend in sheep farms. The situation of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms has been explored mainly in south of the continent (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) where sheep farming is an important industry. In those three countries, as well as in Paraguay, the first comprehensive surveys of anthelmintic resistance were performed among countries in the continent, which showed evidence of high frequency of sheep far

Identification of factors associated with pregnancy loss in lactating crossbred beef cows.

This study aimed to identify factors associated with pregnancy loss in lactating crossbred beef cows managed under extensive conditions. The research was conducted in three management sectors of a commercial farm located in Boquerón, Paraguay. A total of 1554 reproductive records from Brangus and F1 Zebu crossbred cows, diagnosed as pregnant at approximately 30 days of gestation, were analyzed. Cows were bred by fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) followed by exposure to cleanup bulls. Pregnancy status was evaluated by ultrasonography at 30-day intervals from 30 days of gestation until d

Examining malaria treatment and prevention spending efficiency in malaria-endemic countries, 2000-2020.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, an estimated 750,000 people died from malaria. Despite this significant burden, globally, malaria incidence and mortality rates have substantially dropped over the last 30 years. However, growth in spending on malaria and improved outcomes have recently stagnated. This development has made it more important than ever to understand what constitutes efficient spending on malaria. METHODS: Data from various sources, including disaggregated data on malaria spending from the WHO Global Malaria Programme, National Health Accounts, and the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study was

A transcriptomic analysis of gene expression in the venom gland of the snake Bothrops alternatus (urutu).

BACKGROUND: The genus Bothrops is widespread throughout Central and South America and is the principal cause of snakebite in these regions. Transcriptomic and proteomic studies have examined the venom composition of several species in this genus, but many others remain to be studied. In this work, we used a transcriptomic approach to examine the venom gland genes of Bothrops alternatus, a clinically important species found in southeastern and southern Brazil, Uruguay, northern Argentina and eastern Paraguay. RESULTS: A cDNA library of 5,350 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) was produced and asse

One Health dynamics: toxoplasmosis in free-roaming (semi-domiciled and stray) dogs and reported human cases over time.

Characterized as a wide endemic and distributed zoonosis worldwide, toxoplasmosis has been mostly associated with consumption of contaminated raw or undercooked meat and untreated water. Although cats have played an important role as definitive hosts, free-roaming dogs may be used as sentinels for occurrence and spreading of human toxoplasmosis over time. Accordingly, the present study aimed to assess the seropositivity of free-roaming (stray and semi-domesticated) dogs in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, an important tri-border city among Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, comprising an urban

Development and evaluation of specific polymerase chain reaction assays for detecting Theileria equi genotypes.

BACKGROUND: Theileria equi causes equine piroplasmosis, an economically significant disease that affects horses and other equids worldwide. Based on 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA sequences), T. equi can be classified into five genotypes: A, B, C, D, and E. These genotypes have implications for disease management and control. However, no conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays are available to differentiate the genotypes of T. equi. To overcome this limitation, we developed and evaluated PCR assays specific for the detection of each T. equi genotype. METHODS: A pair of forward and re

Global, regional, and national differences in the burden of refraction disorders among children, adolescents, and older adults: current trends and future projections.

BACKGROUND: Refraction disorders (RD), which includes myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, is the leading cause of visual impairment worldwide. Uncorrected RD is the leading cause of moderate and severe vision loss. However, existing studies have only analyzed the burden of RD at the global level, lacking analysis at the national level and specific populations. This study used data from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) report to analyze regional differences and trends in the burden of RD among children, adolescents, and the elderly at the national level. METHODS: GBD 2021 dat

Management of Pediatric Humeral Supracondylar Fractures in a Referral Center From a Developing Country: A Comparison With American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Guidelines.

Introduction Supracondylar fractures are the predominant type of pediatric elbow fractures. The usual mechanism of injury is falling over the hand with the elbow extended and the hand open. The management of these fractures encompasses a range of treatment options, and their goal is to recover the anatomy and achieve a stable contact area between them. There are some controversies on the management of these injuries mainly focused on those that present some degree of displacement. A review and analysis of the current treatment at our institution and a comparison with the guidelines suggested b

Clinical Epidemiology of Extracranial Injuries in Severe Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury in South America.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of pediatric mortality, with a disproportionate burden on low- and middle-income countries. The impact of concomitant extracranial injury (ECI) on these patients remains unclear. This study is the first to characterize the epidemiology and clinical course of severe pediatric TBI with extracranial injuries in any South American country. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data collected prior to implementation of a clinical trial on TBI care in Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile from September 2019 to July 2020.

Benchmarking in a beef cattle breeding program: Lessons from the best breeders.

Beef cattle breeding programs offer genetic evaluations and consulting services on animal breeding practices to help breeders improve the genetic merit of their herds. Some breeders are more willing to apply best practices and technologies than others. Consequently, the average genetic merit and genetic trends differ across herds. We benchmarked some parameters of an average herd (AVE) and the corresponding parameters of herds with higher genetic merit (TOP), both participating in a commercial Nellore breeding program. Expected progeny differences (EPD) for growth, reproductive and carcass tra
