Philornis sp. bot fly larvae in free living scarlet macaw nestlings and a new technique for their extraction.

Bot fly larvae (Philornis genus) are obligate subcutaneous blood-feeding parasites of Neotropical birds including psittacines. We analyze twelve years of data on scarlet macaw (Ara macao) nestlings in natural and artificial nests in the lowland forests of southeastern Peru and report prevalence and intensity of Philornis parasitism. Bot fly prevalence was 28.9% while mean intensity was 5.0 larvae per infected chick. Prevalence in natural nests (11%, N=90 nestlings) was lower than in wooden nest-boxes (39%, N=57) and PVC boxes (39%, N=109). We describe a new technique of removing Philornis larv

Survey of feather diseases of exhibition budgerigars in the United Kingdom.

Breeders of exhibition budgerigars have commented for some years on an increasing prevalence of feather diseases in their birds. A survey of these diseases identified 37 different conditions, but three-quarters of the cases were due to only four conditions: psittacine beak and feather disease, pulpitis, feather mites and feather cysts.

Design and Assessment of Bird-Inspired 3D-Printed Models to Evaluate Grasp Mechanics.

Adapting grasp-specialized biomechanical structures into current research with 3D-printed prostheses may improve robotic dexterity in grasping a wider variety of objects. Claw variations across various bird species lend biomechanical advantages for grasping motions related to perching, climbing, and hunting. Designs inspired by bird claws provide improvements beyond a human-inspired structure for specific grasping applications to offer a solution for mitigating a cause of the high rejection rate for upper-limb prostheses. This research focuses on the design and manufacturing of two robotic tes

Distinction of clinical features and microbiological methods between Chlamydia psittaci and Legionella pneumophila pneumonia confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

OBJECTIVES: Detection and diagnosis of Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) pneumonia is often overlooked due to conventional methods limitations and similarity to other atypical community acquired pneumonia (CAP). Using mNGS, we aimed to distinguish psittacosis from legionellosis for early C. psittaci pneumonia diagnosis and better prognosis. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients diagnosed with atypical CAP were enrolled in this retrospective study, including 14 C. psittaci pneumonia and 23 Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) pneumonia. We collected and compared baseline, lab results, radiology ima

The value of serum precipitins against specific antigens in patients diagnosed with hypersensitivity pneumonitis - retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is the third most common interstitial lung disease, and is often under-recognized, especially in patients who are not aware of their occupational or environmental contact with organic antigens. The aim of the present study was to assess the results of serum specific IgG antibodies (ssIgG) in HP patients and their correlation with clinical data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 128 HP patients, median age 53 years, participated in the study. The control group consisted of 102 patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) other than HP. Assessment of pretr

Extrinsic allergic bronchiolitis in a bird fancier.

A patient in whom a severe systemic illness was characterised by weight loss, arthralgia and breathlessness was exposed to her pet bird. This pragmatic approach reproduced the features of her illness. The changes that occurred in her pulmonary physiology and histology differed from those seen in extrinsic allergic alveolitis in many important respects.

A case of severe psittacosis in a hemodialysis patient-the critical role of detailed medical history and next-generation sequencing.

An 80-year-old male patient on maintenance hemodialysis was admitted with "high fever and cough." Pulmonary imaging suggested pneumonia, but his condition deteriorated rapidly despite empirical broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy (covering bacteria, atypical pathogens, and fungi), progressing to respiratory failure and delirium. He was transferred to the intensive care unit for continuous renal replacement therapy. Routine microbiological tests (blood culture, sputum culture, respiratory pathogen PCR) were all negative. Detailed history revealed that the patient had kept a parrot for over a m

[Ecology of sandflies in Serra do Mar, Itaguaí, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I - Sandfly fauna and prevalence of the species in collections sites and method of capture].

A two-year investigation was conducted in Itaguai, State of Rio de Janeiro, an area with cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in order to study the ecology of sandflies and their habits and role as parasitic vector for men and animals. Capturing took place at three sites: domiciliary (human bait, walls, and light traps); peridomiciliary (walls, from baits used simultaneously: humans, dogs, and chickens; and light traps); and sylvatic (human bait and light traps). A total of 10,172 sandflies were captured, belonging to 17 species of genuses Brumptomyia França & Parrot, 1921 and Lutzomyia França, 1

Novel siadenovirus infection in a cockatiel with chronic liver disease.

A 15-year-old female cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) undergoing long term management for hepatopathy died and underwent necropsy. Microscopic findings were consistent with chronic liver disease characterized by distorted hepatic architecture, fibrosis and biliary proliferation. The additional finding of large intranuclear inclusion bodies within hepatocytes and renal tubular epithelium prompted diagnostic next generation sequencing. The assembled sequences isolated from pooled kidney and liver were related to siadenoviruses. The genus Siadenovirus, within the family Adenoviridae, includes se

A ERA/Cas12f1_ge4.1 biosensor for rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective detection of Chlamydia psittaci via fluorescence and lateral flow assays.

Rapid and accurate detection of Chlamydia psittaci, the causative agent of psittacosis, is crucial for both human and animal health but presents significant challenges, particularly in grassroots health institutions. Our previous PDTCTR fluorescence sensing platform, which combined the engineered Cas12f1_ge4.1 system with recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), significantly enhanced detection efficiency. However, its requirement for specialized equipment, costly RPA reagents, and absence of visual output restricted its practical application in such environments. To address these limitatio

Toxoplasmosis in mynahs.

Visceral toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 23 mynahs (Acridotheres) imported from Mexico, which resulted in the death of all birds in the shipment. The affected birds were inappetent and depressed and had ruffled feathers before death. Gross alterations included mottled, enlarged livers with multiple diffuse subcapsular white foci, congested lungs, mottled spleens, and thickened air sacs. Microscopic alterations were multifocal granulomatous hepatitis, pneumonitis, diffuse splenitis, focal mononuclear myocarditis, and airsacculitis. Foamy macrophages in affected areas of the livers contained 8-10

Volatile Compounds in Feathers of the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) Reflect Sex and Pair-Bond Status.

Birds were traditionally considered to have a limited sense of smell; however, increasing evidence indicates that some taxa, including parrots, possess a functional olfactory system capable of detecting volatile compounds. These chemical cues may convey information related to identity, reproductive status, and mate quality. This study investigates the diversity of volatile compounds in the feathers of scarlet macaws (Ara macao) and examines whether their chemical composition varies according to sex, age, and pair-bond status, as well as whether plumage odor is associated with immune function.

A Comparative Perspective on the Cerebello-Cerebral System and Its Link to Cognition.

The longstanding idea that the cerebral cortex is the main neural correlate of human cognition can be elaborated by comparative analyses along the vertebrate phylogenetic tree that support the view that the cerebello-cerebral system is suited to support non-motor functions more generally. In humans, diverse accounts have illustrated cerebellar involvement in cognitive functions. Although the neocortex, and its transmodal association cortices such as the prefrontal cortex, have become disproportionately large over primate evolution specifically, human neocortical volume does not appear to be ex

Neuronal and non-neuronal scaling across brain regions within an intercross of domestic and wild chickens.

The allometric scaling of the brain size and neuron number across species has been extensively studied in recent years. With the exception of primates, parrots, and songbirds, larger brains have more neurons but relatively lower neuronal densities than smaller brains. Conversely, when considering within-population variability, it has been shown that mice with larger brains do not necessarily have more neurons but rather more neurons in the brain reflect higher neuronal density. To what extent this intraspecific allometric scaling pattern of the brain applies to individuals from other species r

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the family outbreak of psittacosis: the first reported family outbreak of psittacosis in China under COVID-19.

Chlamydia psittaci infection in humans, also known as psittacosis, is usually believed to be an uncommon disease which mainly presents as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). It is usually sporadic, but outbreaks of infection may occasionally occur. In outbreaks, diagnosis and investigations were usually hampered by the non-specificity of laboratory testing methods to identify C. psittaci. In this study, we use metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnosis of a family outbreak of psittacosis under COVID-19. Three members of an extended family of 6 persons developed psittacosis

Developmental origins of mosaic evolution in the avian cranium.

Mosaic evolution, which results from multiple influences shaping morphological traits and can lead to the presence of a mixture of ancestral and derived characteristics, has been frequently invoked in describing evolutionary patterns in birds. Mosaicism implies the hierarchical organization of organismal traits into semiautonomous subsets, or modules, which reflect differential genetic and developmental origins. Here, we analyze mosaic evolution in the avian skull using high-dimensional 3D surface morphometric data across a broad phylogenetic sample encompassing nearly all extant families. We

Neck Kaposiform haemangioendothelioma in a Fischer's lovebird (Agapornis fischeri).

A six-year-old female Fischer's lovebird (Agapornis fischeri) presented at necropsy with a cutaneous mass on the neck, 3.5cm in diameter, yielding and with blood content. Histopathological findings showed a neoplasm characterized by proliferation of vascular endothelial cells. The histology of the mass revealed a multinodular, focally infiltrating tumor. Deeper dermal nodules were made of spindle cells forming vascular slits reminiscent of the histology seen in Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). More superficially located dermal nodules consisted of small blood vessels, with histology resembling capillary
