Coloured overlays and precision-tinted lenses: poor repeatability in a sample of adults and children diagnosed with visual stress.

PURPOSE: Visual stress consists of perceived distortions or discomfort while reading. It is claimed that these symptoms are alleviated by viewing through coloured lenses or overlays, with a specific colour required for each individual. This has been explained on the basis of altered visual cortex excitation as affected by the spectral content of the viewing light. If symptoms are indeed alleviated by a particular colour that has an impact on the individual's visual system, we would expect that selection of the most beneficial colour would be repeatable. The aim of this study was to determine w

Cognitive Effects and Sedation.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive effects and sedation (CES) are prevalent in chronic nonmalignant pain populations receiving long-term opioid therapy and are among the most common reasons patients discontinue opioid use. In this narrative review, we describe the phenomenology, epidemiology, mechanisms, assessment, and management of opioid-related CES. DESIGN: We reviewed the empirical and theoretical literature on CES in opioid-treated populations with chronic pain. Data on long-term opioid therapy (≥ 3 months in duration) in chronic nonmalignant pain patients were sought. RESULTS: The phenomenology of

Gradual adaptation to auditory frequency mismatch.

What is the best way to help humans adapt to a distorted sensory input? Interest in this question is more than academic. The answer may help facilitate auditory learning by people who became deaf after learning language and later received a cochlear implant (a neural prosthesis that restores hearing through direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve). There is evidence that some cochlear implants (which provide information that is spectrally degraded to begin with) stimulate neurons with higher characteristic frequency than the acoustic frequency of the original stimulus. In other wor

Cortical Origins of the Flash-Lag Effect distortions: The Influence of Retinotopic Map Architecture.

The flash-lag effect (FLE) is an illusion whereby the position of a moving object is perceived as being offset in the direction of movement relative to a flashed object. This perceptual misalignment has been posited as a key phenomenon in explaining our ability to accurately predict the future position of moving objects, despite the delays in neuronal processing. Our working hypothesis is that the FLE is resulting from the anticipation generated by propagation of neural activity within visual cortical retinotopical maps. According to this hypothesis, the FLE should be affected by discontinuiti

Time perception in bipolar disorder: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Time distortions characterise severe mental disorders, exhibiting different clinical and neurobiological manifestations. This systematic review aims to explore the existing literature encompassing experimental studies on time perception in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), considering psychopathological and cognitive correlates. METHODS: Studies using an experimental paradigm to objectively measure the capacity to judge time have been searched for. Selected studies have been described based on whether i) explicit or implicit time perception was investigated, ii) the temporal int

Psilocybin desynchronizes the human brain.

A single dose of psilocybin, a psychedelic that acutely causes distortions of space-time perception and ego dissolution, produces rapid and persistent therapeutic effects in human clinical trials1-4. In animal models, psilocybin induces neuroplasticity in cortex and hippocampus5-8. It remains unclear how human brain network changes relate to subjective and lasting effects of psychedelics. Here we tracked individual-specific brain changes with longitudinal precision functional mapping (roughly 18 magnetic resonance imaging visits per participant). Healthy adults were tracked before, during and

The Merging Tracks of Anosognosia and Neglect.

Anosognosia and hemineglect are among the most startling neurological phenomena identified during the 20th century. Though both are associated with right hemisphere cerebral dysfunction, notably stroke, each disorder had its own distinct literature. Anosognosia, as coined by Babinski in 1914, describes patients who seem to have no idea of their paralysis, despite general cognitive preservation. Certain patients seem more than unaware, with apparent resistance to awareness. More extreme, and qualitatively distinct, is denial of hemiplegia. Various interpretations of pathogenesis are still delib

Body image and its relationships with sexual functioning, anxiety, and depression in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with lower levels of satisfaction with body image, which can affect sexuality and social well-being. Thus, we evaluated body image in women with PCOS and its association with body dis(satisfaction), anthropometric indices, sexual function, anxiety, and depression. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 94 women of reproductive age were grouped by body mass index (BMI) and sexual function. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), Figure Rating Scale (FRS), hospital anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-

Learning to decipher time-compressed speech: Robust acquisition with a slight difficulty in generalization among young adults with developmental dyslexia.

Learning to decipher acoustically distorted speech serves as a test case for the study of language-related skill acquisition in persons with developmental dyslexia (DD). Deciphering this type of input is rarely learned explicitly and does not yield conscious insights. Problems in implicit and procedural skill learning have been proposed as possible causes of DD. Here we examined the learning of time-compressed (accelerated) speech and its generalization to novel materials among young adults with DD compared to typical readers (TD). All participants completed a training session that involved ju

[A girl with dyslexia suspected to have Irlen syndrome, completely relieved by wearing tinted lenses].

Irlen syndrome is a proposed perceptual processing disorder characterized by visual distortions while reading. Patients with this syndrome may experience light sensitivity, visual stress, and other related problems such as dyslexia. Tinted lenses and colored overlays have been designed to help individuals with the symptoms of Irlen syndrome. However, there is still debate over the effectiveness of these interventions and whether this syndrome actually exists. In this report, we describe a case involving an 8-year-old girl with dyslexia who experienced severe visual hypersensitivity and whose s

[Prosodic disorders in neurologic diseases--a review of the literature].

The prosodic quality of speech comprises intonation, accent pattern, and rhythm. Among others, these dimensions contribute to the linguistic structure of an utterance and subserve emotional behaviour. Both cortical and subcortical dysfunctions can give rise to impaired speech prosody. The present paper reviews the clinical and linguistic features of the various dys- and aprosodic syndromes as well as their neuroanatomic substrates. 1. Sporadically, lesions of the left hemisphere present with dysprosody in terms of a "foreign accent". In most instances this syndrome seems to be due to apraxia o

Fear influences phantom sound percepts in an anechoic room.

AIMS AND HYPOTHESES: In an environment of absolute silence, researchers have found many of their participants to perceive phantom sounds (tinnitus). With this between-subject experiment, we aimed to elaborate on these research findings, and specifically investigated whether-in line with the fear-avoidance model of tinnitus perception and reactivity-fear or level of perceived threat influences the incidence and perceptual qualities of phantom sound percepts in an anechoic room. We investigated the potential role of individual differences in anxiety, negative affect, noise sensitivity and subcli

Unveiling clouded consciousness: Broad-band EEG slowing tracks recovery from post-traumatic confusional state.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic confusional state (PTCS) frequently occurs during the recovery from disorders of consciousness (DoC) following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Confusional symptoms span multiple domains influencing consciousness, including impairments in the access and integration of mental contents, distortions in perceptual and emotional experiences, vigilance fluctuations, and deficits in memory, orientation, and executive control. While the clinical presentation can be systematically characterized using the Confusion Assessment Protocol (CAP), the underlying neurophysiologic

A Series of N-of-1 Trials Characterizing Individual Responses to Theta-Burst Stimulation in Post-traumatic Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain.

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain (PTNP) is challenging to treat, as conventional therapies have limited efficacy and side-effects, requiring individualized management. N-of-1 trials focus on individualized/personalized medicine. Theta burst stimulation (TBS), a modified form of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), has shown promising effects on chronic pain. This study explored the potential of N-of-1 trials to characterize individual responses across active (continuous TBS) and sham rTMS sessions in patients with PTNP. Eight patients (48±16 years) with

Functional MRI of verbal self-monitoring in schizophrenia: performance and illness-specific effects.

Previous small-sample studies have shown altered frontotemporal activity in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations and impaired monitoring of self-generated speech. We examined a large cohort of patients with schizophrenia (n = 63) and a representative group of healthy controls (n = 20) to disentangle performance, illness, and symptom-related effects in functional magnetic resonance imaging-detected brain abnormalities during monitoring of self- and externally generated speech in schizophrenia. Our results revealed activation of the thalamus (medial geniculate nucleus, MGN) and fr
