Methods to assess uncertainties in doses arising from internal contamination with plutonium: Bayesian statistics and hyper-realisations.

When internal doses are calculated for the purpose of epidemiology studies, it is important that an assessment of the uncertainty in these doses is performed. This assessment should include both uncertainties in measured quantities and those in the various parameter values used in the calculation. In the Mayak Worker dosimetry system this is achieved by assigning a probability distribution to each parameter value. Multiple realisations of the dose for each worker can then be produced by randomly sampling from each distribution during each realisation of the dose. This process is repeated for e

A multi-institutional survey on technical variations in total body irradiation in Japan.

This study aimed to survey technical variations in total body irradiation (TBI) across Japan. A web-based questionnaire investigating technical aspects (irradiation method, in vivo dosimetry, organ shielding, and boluses) of TBI was distributed via the authors' acquaintances in each region of Japan using snowball sampling, and 73 institutions responded. The data were collected from January to April 2024. Three institutions used two distinct irradiation methods, yielding 76 reported techniques. The reported irradiation techniques included long source-to-surface distance (SSD) techniques, which

Dosimetric investigation of small fields in radiotherapy measurements using Monte Carlo simulations, CC04 ionization chamber, and razor diode.

The motivation of this study is to check the dosimetry of small field sizes used in various treatment techniques using different methods (Monte Carlo simulations and detectors). We created two Monte Carlo models for Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators using EGSnrc (BEAMnrc-DOSXYZnrc) codes. Previous studies led us to define one model with an ideal symmetry full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.15 cm in the x and y directions for the Gaussian distribution of the primary electron source and redefine the other with a larger asymmetry FWHM of 0.35 cm in the X and 0.6 cm in the Y directions. We calcu

Dosimetric evaluation and clinical application of collimated apertures with proton beam line scanning in stereotactic radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is a highly effective treatment with precision for small, localized lesions. Proton therapy, characterized by the Bragg peak, offers superior dose conformity compared to photon-based approaches. However, challenges remain in minimizing lateral penumbra and optimizing dose delivery, particularly for small targets. This study presents the first clinical application of collimated apertures integrated with the proton line scanning technique for proton stereotactic radiotherapy (PSRT). The aim was to evaluate the dosimetric advantages and clinical feasibilit

Estimating organ dose with optimized peak dose index in cone-beam CT scans.

PURPOSE: Organ dose evaluation is important for optimizing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan protocols. However, an evaluation method for various CBCT scanners is yet to be established. In this study, we developed scanner-independent conversion coefficients to estimate organ doses using appropriate peak dose (f(0)) indices. METHODS: This study included various scanners (angiography scanners and linear accelerators) and protocols for the head and body (thorax, abdomen, and pelvis) scan regions. f(0) was measured at five conventional positions (center position (f(0)c) and four periphera

177Lu-labeled somatostatin receptor targeted radionuclide therapy dosimetry in meningioma: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Few therapeutic options are currently available for refractory meningiomas. Encouraging results have been reported for 177Lu-labeled somatostatin receptor-targeted radiopeptide therapy (SSTR-RT). The current therapeutic scheme is based on the fixed doses that are recommended for neuroendocrine tumor treatment. However, in personalized medicine, tumor dosimetry can be determined from repeat 177Lu scintigraphy. The aim of this review was to report on the methods used for calculating the tumor absorbed dose (AD) in meningioma patients treated with 177Lu-SSTR-RT and their values. EV

Do we need dosimetry for the optimization of theranostics in CNS tumors?

Radiopharmaceutical theranostic treatments have grown exponentially worldwide, and internal dosimetry has attracted attention and resources. Despite some similarities with chemotherapy, radiopharmaceutical treatments are essentially radiotherapy treatments, as the release of radiation into tissues is the determinant of the observed clinical effects. Therefore, absorbed dose calculations are key to explaining dose-effect correlations and individualizing radiopharmaceutical treatments. The present article introduces the basic principles of internal dosimetry and provides an overview of available

Radiometric determination of rubisco activation state and quantity in leaves.

Rubisco is the key enzyme in photosynthesis, catalyzing fixation of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into energy storage molecules. Several inefficiencies in Rubisco limit the rate of photosynthesis, and, therefore, the growth of the plant. Rubisco is sensitive to light, making deactivation of the enzyme upon sampling likely. Moreover, the indirect methods often used to study its activity make obtaining reliable data difficult. In this Chapter, we describe an approach to generate reliable and repeatable data for Rubisco activities, activation state and abundance in plant leaves. We include m

A predicted three-dimensional dose sequence based treatment planning optimization method for gynecologic IMRT.

In knowledge-based treatment planning (KBTP) for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), the quality of the plan is dependent on the sophistication of the predicted dosimetric information and its application. In this paper, we propose a KBTP method that based on the effective and reasonable utilization of a three-dimensional (3D) dose prediction on planning optimization. We used an organs-at-risk (OARs) dose distribution prediction model to create a voxel-based dose sequence based optimization objective for OARs doses. This objective was used to reformulate a traditional fluence map opti

Alanine response to low energy synchrotron x-ray radiation.

Objective. The radiation response of alanine is very well characterized in the MV photon energy range where it can be used to determine the dose delivered with an accuracy better than 1%, making it suitable as a secondary standard detector in cancer radiation therapy. This is not the case in the very low energy keV x-ray range where the alanine response is affected by large uncertainties and is strongly dependent on the x-ray beam energy. This motivated the study undertaken here.Approach. Alanine pellets with a nominal thickness of 0.5 mm and diameter of 5 mm were irradiated with monoenergetic

A comparative analysis of head computed tomography scans protocols and thyroid dosimetry.

Computed Tomography (CT) is currently one of the most widely used imaging modalities for disease identification, benefiting numerous patients with its advanced technology. However, there is a concern regarding its inappropriate use, which can lead to higher radiation doses in patients and consequently increase the potential risks of developing stochastic effects. Therefore, it is crucial to explore methodologies for optimizing patient doses, particularly in organs with higher radiosensitivity. Within this context, the aim of the proposed study is to compare absorbed dose and noise among differ

Evaluating the induced photon contamination by different breast IOERT shields using Monte Carlo simulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Avoiding the underlying healthy tissue over-exposure during breast intraoperative electron radiotherapy (IOERT) is owing to the use of some dedicated radioprotection disks during patient irradiation. The originated contaminant photons from some widely used double-layered shielding disks including PMMA+Cu, PTFE+steel, and Al+Pb configurations during the breast IOERT have been evaluated through a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach. METHODS: Produced electron beam with energies of 6, 8, 10, and 12 MeV by a validated MC model of Liac12 dedicated IOERT accelerator was u

SSRMP Recommendations No 9: Reference dosimetry in low and medium energy x-ray beams.

The SSRMP recommendations on reference dosimetry in kilovolt beams as used in radiation therapy were revised to establish current practice in Switzerland. The recommendations specify the dosimetry formalism, reference class dosimeter systems and conditions used for the calibration of low and medium energy x-ray beams. Practical guidance is provided on the determination of the beam quality specifier and all corrections required for converting instrument readings to absorbed dose to water. Guidance is also provided on the determination of relative dose under non-reference conditions and on the c

Quantifying uncertainties associated with reference dosimetry in an MR-Linac.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided radiation therapy provides capabilities to utilize high-resolution and real-time MR imaging before and during treatment, which is critical for adaptive radiotherapy. This emerging modality has been promptly adopted in the clinic settings in advance of adaptations to reference dosimetry formalism that are needed to account for the presence of strong magnetic fields. In particular, the influence of magnetic field on the uncertainty of parameters in the reference dosimetry equation needs to be determined in order to fully characterize the uncertainty bud

Technical Note: Impact of impurities on Yttrium-90 glass microsphere activity quantitation.

BACKGROUND: Glass 90 Y microspheres are produced with known radionuclide impurities. These impurities are not independently monitored. Clinical instruments, including ionization chamber dose calibrators and positron emmission tomography (PET) cameras, can be much more sensitive in detecting signals from these impurities than to signals from 90 Y itself. PURPOSE: The "typical" levels of 90 Y impurities have been studied to assess their impact on dosimetry during internal implantation, and for the management of waste. However, unaccounted-for decay spectra of impurities can also have an impact
