Antibiofilm activity of an exopolysaccharide from marine bacterium Vibrio sp. QY101.

Bacterial exopolysaccharides have always been suggested to play crucial roles in the bacterial initial adhesion and the development of complex architecture in the later stages of bacterial biofilm formation. However, Escherichia coli group II capsular polysaccharide was characterized to exert broad-spectrum biofilm inhibition activity. In this study, we firstly reported that a bacterial exopolysaccharide (A101) not only inhibits biofilm formation of many bacteria but also disrupts established biofilm of some strains. A101 with an average molecular weight of up to 546 KDa, was isolated and puri

Saccharides cross-reactive with Bacillus anthracis spore glycoprotein as an anthrax vaccine component.

Bacillus anthracis is a spore-forming bacterium that causes anthrax in humans and in other mammals. The glycoprotein BclA (Bacillus collagen-like protein of anthracis) is a major constituent of the exosporium, the outermost surface of B. anthracis spores. The glycosyl part of BclA is an oligosaccharide composed of 2-O-methyl-4-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanamido)-4,6-dideoxy-d-glucose, referred to as anthrose, and three rhamnose residues. A structure similar to anthrose, 4-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanamido)-4,6-dideoxy-d-glucose is found in the side chain of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Shewanel

Novel oligosaccharide side chains of the collagen-like region of BclA, the major glycoprotein of the Bacillus anthracis exosporium.

Spores of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, are enclosed by a prominent loose fitting layer called the exosporium. The exosporium consists of a basal layer and an external hairlike nap. The filaments of the nap are composed of a highly immunogenic glycoprotein called BclA, which has a long, central collagen-like region with multiple XXG repeats. Most of the triplet repeats are PTG, and nearly all of the triplet repeats contain a threonine residue, providing multiple potential sites for O-glycosylation. In this study, we demonstrated that two O-linked oligosaccharides, a 715-D

Autoimmune gastritis and parietal cell reactivity in two children with abnormal intestinal permeability.

Autoimmune gastritis is characterised by lymphocytic infiltration of the gastric submucosa, with loss of parietal and chief cells and achlorhydria. Often, gastritis is expressed clinically as cobalamin deficiency with megaloblastic anaemia, which is generally described as a disease of the elderly. Here, we report on two prepubertal children who developed autoimmune gastritis. One child developed autoimmune gastritis as part of a polyglandular autoimmune disease from a family with polyglandular autoimmune disease type II (PGA type II) and the other as part of a classic "thyro-gastric cluster,"

Serotype and distribution of adhesion genes in Streptococcus mutans isolated from people with Parkinson's disease.

The delicate balance of the oral cavity is disrupted by changes in hygiene and diet, leading to caries. The virulence of Streptococcus mutans, a key caries pathogen, is partly explained by its rhamnose-glucose polysaccharide (RGP) and its sucrose-dependent and -independent adhesion mechanisms. Given their role in comorbidities, this study investigates the diversity of S. mutans through analysis of RGP and sucrose-independent adhesion proteins (SpaP, WapA, Cnm, Cbm) in Parkinson's disease patients. In the PARKIDENT clinical trial, strains were isolated from saliva samples of Parkinson's patient

Antibiotic resistance and growth of the emergent pathogen Escherichia albertii on raw ground beef stored under refrigeration, abuse, and physiological temperature.

Escherichia albertii is an emerging gram-negative facultative rod that has been implicated in multiple cases of human diarrheal disease, particularly in young children. When biochemical and other typing methods have been used, this organism has often been misidentified due to similarities with other members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Isolates have been reported to be capable of producing attachment and effacement lesions via the synthesis of intimin, cytolethal distending toxin, and a variant form of Shiga toxin. The purposes of this study were to characterize the antibiotic resistance

Gastric colonisation, intestinal permeability and septic morbidity in acute pancreatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial translocation (BT) may represent an important cause of septic morbidity in patients with acute pancreatitis. We have previously demonstrated an association between BT, septic morbidity and colonisation of the proximal GI tract. Alterations in intestinal permeability (IP) may also predispose to BT. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of gastric colonisation, measure IP in patients with acute pancreatitis and relate these to both disease severity and septic complications. METHODS: Gastric colonisation was determined by culturing a sample of nasogastric aspirat

Determination of carbohydrates, sugar alcohols, and glycols in cell cultures and fermentation broths using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection.

Cell cultures and fermentation broths are complex mixtures of organic and inorganic compounds. Many of these compounds are synthesized or metabolized by microorganisms, and their concentrations can impact the yields of desired products. Carbohydrates serve as carbon sources for many microorganisms, while sugar alcohols (alditols), glycols (glycerol), and alcohols (methanol and ethanol) are metabolic products. We used high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAE-PAD) to simultaneously analyze for carbohydrates, alditols, and glycerol in growing yeast (

Extraction, Purification, Structural Elucidation, and Antioxidant Assessment of the Bioactive Polysaccharides From Xinjiang Dried Apricot.

BACKGROUND: Xinjiang apricots (Prunus armeniaca L.) are rich in bioactive polysaccharides with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. As natural antioxidants, such polysaccharides offer advantages over synthetic counterparts in mitigating ROS-related diseases. Their antioxidant depends on structural features, yet Xinjiang apricot polysaccharides remain poorly characterized. This study employs ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction, DEAE-52 purification, and multitechnique structural analysis to investigate these polysaccharides, aiming to establish their structure-a

Green and efficient ultrasound-assisted extraction of Banqiao Codonopsis Radix polysaccharides: Process optimization, extraction mechanism, and in vivo anti-ulcerative colitis efficacy with mechanistic insight.

Banqiao Codonopsis Radix polysaccharides (BCRPs) exhibit promising anti-inflammatory activity, but conventional hot water (HW) extraction is limited by low extraction efficiency, high energy consumption, and substantial carbon emissions. To address these limitations, response surface methodology was used to optimize the ultrasound-assisted (UA) extraction process. The optimal extraction parameters were as follows: extraction power 400 W, ethanol concentration 87%, extraction time 34 min, and liquid-to-solid ratio 29 mL/g. Under these conditions, UA extraction yielded 21.31 ± 1.01% of BCRPs (UB
